Vyker/Ryan Smales

Extra Notes: Six Thermo-Electric Generators - One six-plated solar panel - All Science Gizmos (Except Communtron Dish) - Underbelly docking port for easy transport - 3 bright light fixtures - Ladder and seat-belt for one Kerbonaut.

Be very careful with the turning! Due to how lightweight and compact this rover is, its acceleration is phenomenal, which in turn triggers a very unstable turning circle.

How to get a Kerbal onto the Rover If you haven't already tried the seat-belt method: Get onto the Rover by jumping onto the joint which connects the wheel and its suspension, raise the leg and grab onto the ladder, then lower the leg. If done correctly the leg should hold the Kerbal firmly in place while driving :)

Goliath Mk. II is a multi-purpose vehicle.

this huge truck has 107 parts and weights 21.6 units of mass.

added docking port on the front

Its pluses are:

you can transport rovers, small utilities or fuel tankers

It has lifting-driving on fork on the back

Has required height docking port in the "trunk"

Landing this thing is easy because landing stage is almost perfect (on full throttle cockpit can manage controlling with its torque)

Very powerful

Minuses:

it is a little big

its harder to build launching stage because cockpit is horizontal and not vertical

its hasn't got any rcs

when flying click "control from here" on a probe part that is on top of the landing stage.

I built a copy of your crashed skycrane, HOC, and dropped it in the same position on the moon. I then lifted (With the help of a 3rd party program) a modified version of the rover I submitted yesterday, as well as some of the other submissions here, and a few more ideas of my own. *Nothing* could flip the skycrane without either the skycrane or the rover blowing up. :\ Looks like that thing is stuck there, m8. If you want a skycrane on the moon, you're going to have to fly out a new one.

Well that's not entirely true. I noticed that a couple designs were able to effectively vault the skycrane while in Kerbin's gravity. If one were to be able to give the crane a big enough shove to get it some distance in the air, Harv might be able to hot-swap to it and then use its own engines to try landing it properly or just get back into orbit.

Although flipping the skycrane without breaking of a piece or 2 from the skycrane will be tough! Saving the Kerbal is "easy", saving the crane is hard

Four Rovers to Mun!

Name of rover(s): The Kossamobile

My name: Iakovosian (Ya-ko-vos-ee-an)

Album link: http://imgur.com/a/jmBaY#0

Includes TWO types of rover, and a skycrane that can send FOUR rovers to the Mun with ease!

N1sLko0.png

Rover #1: (normal)

Mass = 4.705; Parts = 24

Pros:

* Can reach speeds of up to 20 m/s.

* Can turn reliably below 8 m/s (the faster you move, the slower you must turn).

* Probe module is rotated so that the navball points in the direction of travel.

* Includes 4 'Illuminators' (two front, two rear) to increase the brightness of anything their beam touches.

* Mounted generators produce enough electricity to maintain prolonged acceleration, even if you leave the lights on!

* Has a docking port at the standard height, both front and rear. This means you can create a really long convoy to transport larger amounts of fuel in one go (I've driven a convoy made up of 12 rovers).

* The core is made of fuel tanks to enable mass transportation.

Rover #2: (with flippers & rockets)

Mass = 5.24; Parts = 31

Pros:

* All of the above, plus...

* Includes 3 landing legs mounted on the front to enable righting of flipped spacecraft.

* Landing legs can be raised and lowered even whilst travelling at full speed (over flat ground).

* Has 4 rockets mounted radially to enable vertical lift-off, should you want your rover to become airborne! (Yes, you can put your rover into Mun orbit - I have done it myself)

Skycrane: (without fuel/engines) Mass = 5.004

Mass (with fuel/engines) = 30.254; Parts = 60

Pros:

* Can transport 4 rovers to the Mun at once.

* Includes space for one Kerbal.

* The Kerbal can repair your rovers, should any of them suffer a tyre puncture.

* Carries more fuel than needed, so you could put a docking port on the top (before launch) and then send it back into Mun orbit to act as a refuelling station for other spacecraft.

* Design of the skycrane ensures maximum stability and a central centre of mass during flight.

Exactly! I was going for 100% skycrane survivability and rescuing the Kerbal. Out of 5 tries from each thing I tested, success rates were all less than good.

Easiest solution? Use a new skycrane to land one or more of the rovers, and end the flight on the old skycrane. :P

So you said you needed a rescue rover/crew so I made this. I call it the MV , here are some of the things it can do;

fly on the mun, hold 6 kerbals, flip things, and dock/ carry things. It has a flipper in the form of a landing legs , A forward docking node, A tilter ( to make the docking node work), plus all science equipment, and assorted lights and comms. The MV also has a probe built in to it so you don't need kerbals to drive it, and the probe comes with it's own power source. Now with %100 more ability to be lifted via sky crane.

One of the main things you can do with it is flip over the sky crane that trapped the pilot. Another thing is move kerbals so they don't have to walk very far, thus taking up less time. You can use the docking port to move small rovers that also have one, or move containers that can't move under their own power.

It weighs ~16 and is made of 95 parts. The center of mass is right above the probe.

The hot keys are: (1) solar panels, (2) ladders, top docking port (3) docking port open/close and the tilter, (4) opens dishes and toggles science equipment, (5) toggle the flipper.

This is the download: http://www./download.php?8fef45gg4llj22a

PS. How did I do for my first post on the forums?

Spider Utility Vehicle

Total Mass of Utility - 7.2 Tons (Used Mechjeb to count, then removed. 58 Parts.

100% uninterrupted work during the day. Armored plate on the bottom for durability. 2 stage lifter/flipper, 2nd stage lifts the whole rover up slightly.

It's actually built "backwards", the lifting mechanisms are in the back, counterbalanced by RCS fuel tanks in the front. Safely travel ~10-15m/s, RCS is super helpful for recovery.

Looking for a fun multipurpose vehicle? Try the kerban dragster mark 2 from Jetset Rocketry

What makes it so different? Well to start with, its a shuttle ,capable of carrying 2 kerbans (1 passenger, 1 pilot) and 2 space probes to munar orbit and back from a refuel in kerbin orbit.

Next, its a lander, allowing for vertical landings on the moon.

Finally, its a rover. it uses 3 landing gears to transition from vertical to horizontal, then the nosewheel retracts, leaving 4 drive wheels to pull it around. Extend the nosewheel again, and you can light your engines, find a hill, and launch your dragster back into munar orbit to rendevous with nearby stations or to land again, significantly reducing travel time.

ydVN6jz.jpg

All this at a mass of just 21.67 fueled.

Munar Explorer - Manned Rover

40 parts 7.176 mass

Images and craft file.

Light weight rover capable of towing other devices. Adapted from my own Mun base rover used for moving my lander using the over roof docking node. I used the covered node but it can easily be swapped with a open node for coupling to a crane for the trip.

Fully tested flipping the crashed crane on it's side on the moon turned out low gravity was a bit tricky you want to come in under top corner.

Once in position to flip you must turn on ASAS and engage the parking break. I've been able to fly off the surface with similar ship when landed on the side like the crane.

ASAS makes the rover very stable when roving at 20km/s. Even recovered a bump launch using ASAS torque. While roving at speed use rotation controls to turn and F to lock in new heading. The rover is fully nuke powered and manned, and has a probe for fully unmanned use. IVA view is completely functional.

Action groups:

1: Head Lights

2: Area Lights

3: Ladder

4: Open Roof Clamp-o-tron

0: Decouple rear Clampo-tron towing hitch

P.S. If a sky crane is necessary, a girder can be locked on the vertical metal column located just behind the main cockpit. This will extend a hardpoint out of the shell, suitable for a skycrane attachment.

Loving the series Harv, I'd like to throw my two cents in with this - The Big Bertha mk2

http://imgur.com/a/SA7Uh#0

gAaJOBf.png

LwELp3j.png

CLQhQ91.png

My name is Kyle, no mods on this puppy, she weighs 28.95 kilos (I assume thats what KSP's units are), and the name is unforgettably the Big Bertha mk2.

The .craft file is sittin' over here http://www./?w5qtqy6dl8gvj3j

I built this thing as 2 things : a tank to knock that skycrane over, and a mobile fortress for anyone at the mun-base. This thing holds up to 11 kerbals at once not counting what you can have on the ladders. It's dockable, but would require it's own station because A. clamp-o-tron is too high and B. it might as well be too high because it is not fitting in that hangar. Docking would be beneficial however, as this thing can generate plenty of excess power in sunlight and a bit out AND it has a nice fuel can to boot. She rolls pretty well on Kerbin and should do even better with less gravity pulling her down, though I haven't tested such things since you only want the final stage. Another nice feature for a to be cluttered base is that she has zero-turn (the ability to rotate in place). To top it all off the center of mass ended up beautifully placed.

Getting to the honest part, she has a couple flaws. If you try to ascend a steep incline head on you will probably loose the pod, which leads me to believe you might want to back into that skycrane if you choose Bertha. The part count is higher than expected, but I did try to take it down. On top of that the ladders can be a bit buggy on and off which bothers me. I think I nailed them this time, but I'd test them before getting to the base.

I thank you for reading Harv, and if you care to know a little bit extra about this fine lady then I thank you for your interest and read on friend. I created the Big Bertha mk1 as a challenge to a friend saying "Put this on the mun." He never did manage, seeing as the first was wobbly, heavier, and unbalanced. We tried a few things to try and get that thing the distance and stability it needed to be the mobile fortress it was meant to be, but we were only able to crash it into the mun, not land it. When you put out this challenge Big Bertha was the first thing to come to my mind in regards to being big enough to move that crane. I hope whether you choose her or not you enjoy Big Bertha for what she is, and good luck spaceman.
