Roverdude added charring to heatshields that use ModuleAblator (basically, darkening them). It defaults to on unless you turn it off. Setting both values to 1 turns things off.

If the LEM docking cone is manually recessed into another part to make it sorta flush, or at least not hovering above it, will the Apollo probe still dock?

Okay, so I think I have some kind of FASA issue. Mac version of KSP. I cannot use the Apollo capsule. I am testing it in a clean KSP install with only FASA, downloaded from this thread, and the Squad parts in the Game Data folder. I can place the piece in the VAB without issue. When I try to launch the vessel, I'll get to the black loading screen with the orbiting planets as the game changes scene. After a few seconds, I lose the ability to change programs, though I still can move the mouse. Eventually, I will regain the ability to switch programs, though the planets no longer rotate and the music keeps playing, without any change. I've tried other manned parts in the pack and have loaded them into the flight scene without issue, and have even tried making the Mk1-2 pod the root and placing the Apollo capsule above it, with no change in luck. It still didn't load.

With 8gb RAM, I hope I have enough to run the stock game + FASA without issue, so I don't think its a memory issue.

Here is the log, I think. I've included everything after "--- initialising editor mode...---". I don't often report bugs, so if people want or need more information to diagnose, I'd be happy to run a test or find a file to upload. Thanks in advance for trying to help:

When RealChute is installed, none of the parachutes from FASA will open. The staging icon does change though.

Okay, so I think I have some kind of FASA issue. Mac version of KSP. I cannot use the Apollo capsule. I am testing it in a clean KSP install with only FASA, downloaded from this thread, and the Squad parts in the Game Data folder. I can place the piece in the VAB without issue. When I try to launch the vessel, I'll get to the black loading screen with the orbiting planets as the game changes scene. After a few seconds, I lose the ability to change programs, though I still can move the mouse. Eventually, I will regain the ability to switch programs, though the planets no longer rotate and the music keeps playing, without any change. I've tried other manned parts in the pack and have loaded them into the flight scene without issue, and have even tried making the Mk1-2 pod the root and placing the Apollo capsule above it, with no change in luck. It still didn't load.

With 8gb RAM, I hope I have enough to run the stock game + FASA without issue, so I don't think its a memory issue.

Here is the log, I think. I've included everything after "--- initialising editor mode...---". I don't often report bugs, so if people want or need more information to diagnose, I'd be happy to run a test or find a file to upload. Thanks in advance for trying to help:

Until now I always found an easy answer to all my KSP questions on the internet, but now I finally had to register ;)

After playing a lot of RSS+RP-0 recently, I wanted to make a NASA-like playthrough with FASA. I'm just started to replicate the Atlas-Agena, but I'm stuck on the connection between the Agena-Stage and the Atlas-Stage. If there is a specific decoupler for it, I can't find it (this one I could use a procedural one for anyway. But what I'm really in need of are fairings, to hide the service part of the Agena-Stage under. I can't find any fairings in the current FASA build, that are fitting. First I thought they were just missing in the RP-0 techtree, but I can't find them in sandbox either.

Are there fitting fairings for the Agena-Stage coming with the mod?

Okay, so I think I have some kind of FASA issue. Mac version of KSP. I cannot use the Apollo capsule. I am testing it in a clean KSP install with only FASA, downloaded from this thread, and the Squad parts in the Game Data folder. I can place the piece in the VAB without issue. When I try to launch the vessel, I'll get to the black loading screen with the orbiting planets as the game changes scene. After a few seconds, I lose the ability to change programs, though I still can move the mouse. Eventually, I will regain the ability to switch programs, though the planets no longer rotate and the music keeps playing, without any change. I've tried other manned parts in the pack and have loaded them into the flight scene without issue, and have even tried making the Mk1-2 pod the root and placing the Apollo capsule above it, with no change in luck. It still didn't load.

With 8gb RAM, I hope I have enough to run the stock game + FASA without issue, so I don't think its a memory issue.

I can't really see anything wrong in that part of the log file, and I can't say that I've had anything like this happen on my Mac. It looks like what you posted is from the "Player.log" file in "~/Library/Logs/Unity", and I'm not sure if that's going to be more helpful than the "KSP.log" file in the "KSP_osx" folder. You could always try deleting and re-downloading FASA and/or KSP, but there is something you could try to see if you can narrow down what's going on. You said that KSP only becomes unresponsive when the Apollo CM is part of the ship, but that when you use any other crewed part it behaves as expected. To see if KSP or Unity are writing anything to the logs that might indicate what's going on I would suggest the following:

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop and call it whatever you like. You will be placing log files here to compare them later.

2. Start KSP and enter your saved game.

3. Enter the VAB.

4. Place the Apollo CM in the editor and no other parts.

5. Click "Launch".

6. If the game becomes unresponsive as it did before then Force Quit KSP either by clicking the Apple Menu and going down to "Force Quit", or by holding the Command, Option, and Escape keys to bring up the Force Quit dialogue.

7. Once the game is no longer running drag the "KSP.log" and "Player.log" files to the new folder you created on your Desktop, and rename them "KSPApollo.log" and "PlayerApollo.log"

8. Repeat steps 2 and 3.

9. Place the Gemini pod int he editor and no other parts.

10. Click "Launch".

11. Assuming all goes as you described, after the flight scene loads hit "ESC" and revert to the VAB.

12. Quit KSP.

13. Drag the "KSP.log" and "Player.log" files to the folder on your Desktop and rename them "KSPGemini.log" and "PlayerGemini.log".

14. You can now open and compare the logs either in "Console" (which is the default application for any ".log" file), or in "TextEdit", or any other text editing software.

Doing this will allow you to see what the logs look like when things work as they should and what they look like when they don't. This way you can tell a harmless error or warning from one that may point to the problem at hand.

I can imagine a few of outcomes of this procedure: 1) the game behaves as it did before and you find an error in the "Apollo" logs that aren't in the "Gemini" logs, 2) the game behaves as it did before, but you find no errors in the "Apollo" logs that aren't in the "Gemini" logs, or 3) the game behaves as it should for both capsules.

If option (1) happens, then you may at least have an idea of what's going on and perhaps how to fix it. If option (2) happens then you may want to run through steps 2 - 6 again (note the time you click "Launch"), but this time go to "/Applications/Utilities/Console" and look at the "System.log" and find the approximate time you clicked "Launch" to see if the system logged any errors. If option (3) happens, you could try reverting the Apollo CM to the VAB, adding a part and trying to go back to the flight scene.

I know this is a lot of information, and there may be an easier way to track down the problem that I'm not thinking of, or know of at the moment. It may be as simple as having to re-install FASA, other than that I'm not sure what could be going on. I hope I've been able to help if only a little.

It's not really a RSS or RO problem, I just thought I would not have to use procedural fairings for that. Most FASA parts seem to have their own fitting fairings, and the Agena Service Module even features the attachement points for them, but there are simply no fitting fairings :/ .

The patchnotes say, that all but the Agena ones were removed, but I simply can't find those. The only ones that I can find are a bit too small. It seems as if there are no fairings in the current release, to build the Agena like on the FASA release thread screenshots (imgur.com/a/IZCZv#qYo9qiy)

IIRC, the Agena's engine has its own fairing when a decoupled is placed below it. Then if you add two of the FASA fairings stacked on top of each other to the nodes on the service section, they should cover it. This is the non-RO version, so I don't know if the RO co figs remove that white short fairing piece I'm referring to

its just that with RO we had to do something because of all the odd sizes. the P-inter stage with the p-fairings works vary well because of the wide rangers of sizes parts of rockets can be. I mean my sounding rocket has a .3 m diameter. and something like a Saturn 5 is over 4 m in diameter... and with the inter-stage and faring you can get that cool drop away of the faring after stage separation like we see in the NASA videos

Mh... Then I probably already found the right FASA-fairing, but it seems to be a bit too small... If RO tweaks FASA-parts then this really could be an RO-problem in the end.

Edit: uh, the FASA parts seem to be rescaled by RO, should have thought about that earlier. Maybe they just forgot to rescale the fairings aswell...

Allright, looks like they really just missed a rescale. Added one in the same factor like Agena-Module in the RO-FASA configs, and now I can finally use them ;)

Doesn't look exactly like it does on the FASA screenshots, but it's still looking better then most of my normal RO-rockets, yay!

yea RO kind of mods FASA so its a mod of a mod. Someday when I have a bit of free time I will export all of the FASA assets to a unity package so Nathan can export them properly in RO. The source art is several gigabytes of data so its not a small problem.

Have an issue with this and (seemingly) FAR. Namely, the Mercury-Atlas rocket.

I've searched around and someone* did apparently have the same issue I'm having, and I'm going to strike some things down first. I am using properly updated versions of both mods and KSP. I do know how to fly under the FAR aero. And I've built and rebuilt this rocket countless times under several different clean installs (ranging from fully loaded down with mods to just having stock, FAR, and FASA)

Now, as to the problem. The rocket is simply uncontrollable if you attempt any sort of actual gravity turn. Pointing the rocket anywhere other than dead center or slightly off center of prograde ends up the rocket rapidly pulling itself away from prograde and then falling apart because physics, ultimately ending up where you either can't attempt a gravity turn at all (neither a tap left and watch turn or a controlled one) or you end up with one that's unrealistically steep (we're talking not even halfway to 45* at 45km up) and essentially makes it impossible to achieve a proper orbit or even just fly the rocket as it actually flew.

As far as I can tell, the issue seems to be pretty much in the rocket itself as it simply has no control authority beyond the two vernier engines (which in of themselves seem broken, as the rather super large gimbal they have coupled with the for whatever reason also super high gimbal speed (which all the FASA engines seem to have unfortunately) makes them spazz out if they try to automatically stabilize a failing rocket), and those basically do nothing to help keep the rocket stable.

Whether its mainly FAR thats causing this issue or the Atlas itself, I don't know. Everything else I can make flies just fine, but it seems that the Mercury-Atlas (or just the Atlas in general) is just broken. It makes sense why it might be, as the booster and main engine of the rocket itself aren't supposed to be able to gimbal and thus provide control to the rocket, but the vernier engines don't do anything to compensate for them.

*The fact that only one other person seems to have had this problem really makes me question how thats even possible given how bad this is. To me it either seems as if no one really flies the rocket at all (with FAR) or something we both did is breaking this rocket. But as far as I can tell, I'm not missing anything from the stack, and I know that how I fly isn't the issue, as literally every other rocket under FAR (be it a FASA rocket or otherwise) flies just fine

Small Update: Having flown it a couple more times, I do believe that the vernier engines are the crux of the issue, and the issue being that they simply aren't powerful enough to control the rocket properly. Even after packing 3x the amount of them onto the rocket I still couldn't control it without using an unrealistic flight path.

One thing that might be worth looking at is that the vernier engines have a naturally high gamble range in stock; and then FAR triples (I think) that. That might be the source of the spazzing out. I seem to recall difficulty with that stack as well, so it probably isn't just you.

Might it also be a CoG thing? KSP drives me nuts with its behavior of draining tanks top to bottom, moving the CoG back during a launch. Maybe disable fuel flow to the upper tank for the initial climb and see if it changes? (I haven't tried this on this stack before, last agena I launched actually was on a Titan... Talk about excess dV, but I digress :D )

Otherwise... I dunno >< (it's a damn pretty rocket though!)

I specifically made it for stock KSP and it works well there. You can adjust the gimbal range in the VAB and it may help some, as for the speed I have no idea.

In the Atlas you are going to flip partly because of what Komodo said.

I did not configure the Atlas rocket to be flown under realistic conditions that FAR imposes. The CG is shifting during flight and imparting more instability in the rocket also the mass is not properly distributed to account for the implantation of FAR.

To fix this your going to have to change the mass of the individual parts to keep the center of mass towards the top of the rocket during flight. Adding some to the top tank and taking it away from the parts on the bottom so the total mass does not change.
