What did you do in KSP1 today?

Hah, I just landed a very similar rover on the Mun today. It's a test bed for my upcoming remote Duna rover.

After the science is done, the small science result module separates from the rover, flies back to orbit and docks with the lander stage to be taken to my station at Kerbin orbit, from where it will be retrieved to the surface by another craft.

I'm working on a Cruise Missile* concept.  Too hush-hush to post any thruster-porn yet but I'll be making a video as soon as I've got everything properly co-ordinated.

* 1. it de-orbits.  2. it cruises to the target.  c) it bangs out a chute overhead  d) cuts away and goes into a nose-dive with a cowboy in the EVA chair guiding it down...  4) final chutes go PLOP! to a stop right over your house.  e) lands on its fins in your backyard  6. crushing your BBQ and maybe your dog kennel...

HONEY!!  I'm HOME...

Looks neat. My rover is a bit simpler, though; it only carries re-usable experiments and is designed to transmit its data via radio instead of launching an ESU. It's also an obsolete design, being based on the old Moho-class rover and having been superseded by the new Eeloo-class mini-rover (shown here on Dres as the one bound for Eeloo hasn't arrived yet):

I'd launched this rover before I'd designed the replacement, though, so I thought I might as well use it.

Tell me about it!

Me: I need to land this fuel tank next to my Munbase, I'll use mechjeb to save a bit of time.

Mechjeb: Okay dokay! Let's put it down in this random place, via the side of a mountain!

On top of that I had to land my largest space station via Hyperedit after a glitched docking board led to it becoming one with the crew change shuttle, the KSS Discovery, which was left dangling off the side of the larger machine for all time, like a horny angler fish.

On the plus side, it did remind me of a verse in TISM's 'Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me'.

So I'm not the only one. This happens even with the latest dev version. And take offs are problematic as well, instead of firing the engine it fires RCS thrusters and flips the vessel.

Well, nothing happened today, because I didn’t play KSP. The closest I got was watching Matt Lowne’s reddit challenge livestream. Tomorrow I’ll hopefully launch the Kerbollo 5 mission to the Mun (for realzies this time) I watched a few tutorials on YouTube, so nothing can go wrong, right? Right?

Yay! That is exactly what I needed!  Especially with the storage shield cap!  When will we be able to download it?

Finally managed a landing on Tellumo (Galileo's Planet Pack)!!

Yxl1pDg.jpg

Next time I'll try take off as well. Turns out taking off at 46.7 degrees does not work so well.

Still, progress!! 10 iterations before this one all blew up in the atmosphere... This is at least as hard as Eve.

Crap.

I've got two landers (and their transport vehicles) orbiting Duna. I was just about to land one of them, the Phoenix. I did a burn to lower its orbit. I switched to the map for a moment... just for a moment..... and suddenly I hear CRASHBOOM!, and I notice the navball is spinning wildly. The Phoenix slammed into its transport. How the hell?!?!?? I had backed away from it after undocking, and I always try to undock and back away towards the planet. I took out all of the engines on the transport, the radiators, and all but one solar panel. The transport is now useless, a drifting hulk. The Phoenix lander lost all but one solar panel and its docking port... it still flies, but I'm not going to risk landing it. The pilot, 'Garble', idiot that he is, doesn't know any different... his only hope at this point is a rendezvous with the Duna-Lander-1 transport ship, and hope there's room for him to hitch a ride home.

This is the second time since I started playing this game that I've had a ship collide with another out there in the vast emptiness of space. :/

Edit:
Well I was able to get the Phoenix over to the Duna-Lander-1 transport, and Garble now has a ride home. He's hanging out with the others, snarfing their snacks, waiting to see if the Duna-Lander-1 makes a successful touch-down. I made Garble work for his screw-up however; I needed to get the Phoenix lander out of the way, so not to clutter up this orbit. So, pointing the lander off in an 'outta here' direction, I tapped the throttle a little and then quickly sent Garble on EVA. That was almost a mistake, but it worked out ok. It's a maneuver I'm not looking forward to making again... nor would I recommend it to any but the really bold..... just so much to potentially go wrong.

So things have been pretty busy around Jool lately.

CMX4HhF.jpg

One of the recently-arrived shipments contained some extra parts for my Laythe space station, including the power/comm strut that would make it function as an independent craft without needing to have any other vessels docked with it. It also contained the main habitation module, making the station fully functional (not complete per se since it's still missing a fuel tank as well as the second power/comm strut included in its original design, but able to fulfill the main functions that it was built for.)

gh5sLmh.jpg

I also put the non-resuable portions of my Tylo lander into orbit around Tylo. It'll probably be a while before I actually use it, but there's no sense of having it clutter up Foothold Station until then.

aplU65a.png

I also learned the hard way just how huge Jool's SOI is. This shipment was launched in the transfer window before my recently-arrived ships but it's only just now arrived at Pol. I'd initially captured into an extremely eccentric orbit around Jool so it took a long time to complete my manoeuvring burns to arrive at Pol. This is an important shipment, too, containing a Laythe SSTO, an extension to Foothold Base on Pol's surface, and most importantly a system tug that will remain in the Jool system. This will allow me to move my scanner satellites to identify landing sites on Bop, Tylo and Vall (I currently only have scanners in orbit around Pol and Laythe, and while I have additional satellites on the way it'll be a while before they arrive and I don't want to delay my landings until then.) It'll also let me take a load of ore to Laythe Station, from which I'll be able to generate enough LiquidFuel to land the rest of my LaythePort base and allow the large tug currently stranded there to return to Pol (and then to Kerbin.)

I assume you mean escape velocity? Why didn't you let it burn up in Duna's atmosphere?

I did... kinda... sorta. It was the intention anyway. I pointed the ship retrograde, fired the engines and bailed. That means of course that the engines continued to burn up until it was 2.5km away, and then it went on rails (no more burn). Its orbit didn't change much, just enough to get it out of the area where I was working. It will have to be dealt with in the future.

More to the story...
Duna-Lander-1 crashed on landing. It was coming in too hot, landed hard, destroyed its engines and tipped over. Its two occupants are fine, using the craft as a refuge hangout until a rescue mission comes for them... it still has working solar panels, battery, and antenna (for tv).
bp12QI1.png

The Duna-Lander-1's transport is on its way back home... so far, so good. There's a rover on the way; I'm going to alter its plans and have it land by the Lander-1's crew. It should give them something to do (rover around) until the rescue ship arrives.

Dunbles Kerman is absurdly enthusiastic about having landed on the Mun

pz9YPa.png

vOtjMH.png

He was enthusiastic during launch, excessively happy in orbit, and amazingly jubilant during the Mun landing. I expected that obnoxious grin to be wiped off when the craft entered Kerbin's atmosphere at 3500 m/s, but nope.

Still smiling like mad.

Oh wait.

He might be mad. I need to start screening the Kerbals before recruiting them. Some of them have the courage and stupidity bars maxed out. Which is worrying, for obvious reasons.....

i think this was during the Kerbal States early experiments with LSD

Well, I did say that today Kerbollo 5 would set out for the Mun, but just as Jeb, Bill and Bob were going through their final launch checks, the Crawler started to move the rocket back to the VAB. Mission Control (aka me) had decided that we would send unmanned rovers to the Mun and Minmus before any kerbals set foot there. So I built Mun Rover 1. It did take a few attempts and launches to realise that I was running out of electric charge. I eventually left Mun Rover 1 on an escape trajectory from Kerbin as a kind of 'artifact' that I could look back on later. However, eventually, I reached final descent with Mun Rover 2 and released the transfer stage (which probably had enough delta-V to reach Duna or something). I descended under the skycrane's small engines. After a lot of scary jumps up and down across the surface, I got into a scary hover, released the rover, which bounced on its wheels onto the surface, and saw the skycrane zoom away. Its trajectory was taking it a long way across the surface and it was eventually going to crash in the middle of one of the Mun's giant craters. I got to roving (after quicksaving). On level ground the rover can get up to 12-13 m/s, but once on a downward slope it reached 17 m/s! That's about 50 mph!! A couple of times, when pressing A or D and pirouetting, the rover tipped onto its back and I had to reload the save. Here are some pictures..... (by the way, how do I actually make my Imgur images appear in the post?)

Album https://imgur.com/9HVwf9D will appear when post is submitted

That's what I did :)
