What did you do in KSP1 today?

My First Eve and First Moho Fleets have arrived at Eve.  Each fleet consists of four ships and was launched some time back in 2019 about 2-3 months ago.  The Moho Fleet will refuel at Gilly and then push on to its final destination.

We have below:

  1. Nova: space station
  2. Scout: comm sat constellation; 2 pods of 3 RA-2; an RA-100 and a survey scanner, all independently mobile
  3. Aquila VIII: mounted on an Escort cyclic booster with payload of 8 Hummingbirds, 8 Ladybugs and a Mule.
  4. Goblin: surface miner

The other boosters pictured above are Zephyrs and they would normally burn-back immediately after the initial Kerbin transfer injection to be re-used.  In the case of these first fleets, the Zephyrs have made the ride to the destination to serve there as cyclic interplanetary transfer injection boosters.

One of the Aquilas reached Gilly orbit first:

Coincidentally, my Duna operation was due for re-activation.

The First Duna Fleet had reached Duna on 2019-10-04, but the Aquila on that trip arrived with insufficient fuel for capture; had to be abandoned; with its payload assembling into 2 sections and capturing orbit independently.  Those orbits were a reverse orbit at the outer limits of the Duna SOI.

Mining was established on Ike and, when sufficient fuel had been accumulated, a lone Mule embarked on a six-month long rescue mission.

The stragglers have returned and now fly in formation with the IX1 Nova space station :

I decided for no good reason to use every rocket engine on one rocket. Next I will add the jets as well.

even the Sepatron... you have outdone yourself. I don’t see the Mastodon tho.
after the jets, do every part. You don’t have to use them (eg fuel cell array), but every part.

im kidding but that’d be cool lol

I launched Pathfinder-1 to fly by Duna. The probe launched on an Atlas V 412 booster and departed Kerbin a couple hours later. Duna flyby should happen in ~150 days. I used a higher energy transfer to shave time off the journey because this is a flyby anyways and the Atlas V/Centaur combo is more than capable.

Improved with all Mastadon variants and jets. Awaiting your piloting!

Made a rover for the moons of kerbin with a return vehicle in JNSQ.  First time using robotics for me, and it was a fun challenge to assemble and get science modules attached, while still fitting within a fairing.

I played with a big rock. Since I made the capture inside Kerbin SOI, I had to be patient to give it a correct orbit. The Mun helped me for a plane change. I also used some aerobraking, costing me this mover ship (unmanned, thanksfully) ... I had to send a new one. Orbit is still not definitive, but this will be the first piece of a refuelling station / casino. 3 other asteroids are also in tow of other movers, but this is the only BIG one.

My first eve mission is also arriving. The first ship (an ISRU rover) also did an aerobraking manoeuver. I had to reload after forgetting to put the fuel in one side to ensure stability ... my next playthrough will probably be a no-reload one, but I'm not sure I'm ready :P.

Today was a day for orbital assembly, plus some fun with a little 1 kerbal runabout taking a lucky customer on a trip around the Mun.

Tristar Station was made as part of an entry to the Space Hotel challenge, with all parts launched on the reusable Reuso 4.

All sort of stuff, well first my mobile munbase is kind of owned by spaceX.
cj3eUfxh.png
that thing is pretty much an piece of trash thrown together. I was my second base and its very versatile but its ugly and the standard base is more capable and looks better I think.
SvbppcWh.png
It also has an greenhouse and can produce parts.

On the other hand I landed an Soyuz on Eve.
KUH1MSDh.png
Is the accent rocket for my Eve base.

My Tylo base reached Jool, yes its kind of an train.
wwpdb1Nh.png
The chemical first stage was dropped during the injection but all the rest is included.
It has an 9 engine nucler stage, an nuclear tug, the base facing backward, an crashing stage with drop tanks and an Tylo science lander in front.

And yes yesterday I matched up with an Eve accent rocket and got a bit disappointed.
9DMv2gDh.png
it was an spent upper stage who was not deorbited as it ran out of fuel, to reach another I have to return to Gilly and fuel up so I can select another accent stage, poor kerbal is still there after splashed down at poles who is the last biome to sample as far as I know.

I've been doing some test flights of what I hope will be an SSTO for JNSQ Eve. Features include fuel tanks that can flip from 4 degrees Kelvin (cold enough to liquefy helium) to over 15000K (hot enough to turn the entire plane to atoms) every half second during the atmospheric ascent on Kerbin; no idea why that happens, it was fine 2 days ago and only two very specific parts are affected. Apart from that, tests are going well and some improvements have been made like more solar panels and batteries to provide power for cooling the liquid hydrogen tanks that fuel the nuclear engines, changes to control surface limiters so it doesn't shred itself if I look at the keyboard when it's flying above Mach 2, and radiators to dissipate re-entry heat once landed/re-orbited.

Next up is a dry run to Eve in a sandbox game to make sure it works properly, the last attempt resulted in the plane minus wings belly-flopping onto the surface...

Thanks to the combined efforts of my Lazybird and the Mass Ore Transport stationed on Eeloo, I rescued a stranded engineer named Dacan Kerman.

4UY79Gj.png

  • Making my de-orbit burn while approaching the target. You can see the Ice Canyon in the background here.
    • It took a couple of refueling runs - one with the mass ore transport, and one with an older model with a lower ore capacity - to fill this baby up. Good thing that I put a docking port on the top of the plane, so it can do more than just hang on to the carrier plane.

f7aMvi5.png

  • Dacan Kerman in front of a flag after the plane landed 100 meters from the can.
    • I was actually surprised it was the older can model, seeing how it changed after 1.6.

Now I just need to refuel this thing on Eeloo's surface before launching into orbit - and having the ore transport refuel it again. After that, the question is: should I go straight to Kerbin, or do I stop at Duna first?

  • KERBIN
    • Pros
      • Get home quicker
      • May save fuel via aerobraking
        • ALSO RISKY
    • Cons
      • Chance of blowing up during aerobraking
        • And I have scientific data in that plane's probe core.
      • May not have enough delta-V for a safe ejection+insertion+landing
        • Aerobraking may also be insufficient, too.
  • DUNA
    • Pros
      • Will require less delta-V
      • Mass ore transport on standby on Ike
    • Cons
      • Take longer to get home

What do you think I should do?

Rescued Lev from LKO this morning. A free Kerbonaut seems like a great way to build up the corps without buying Kerbonauts. Or does the next Kerbonaut still cost more?

Thanks to both Scott Manley and Matt Lowne for the rendezvous tips, tutorials or not you two are lessoning the learning curve.

Kinda miffed that Lev could/would not Board after Grabbing the rescue capsule - maybe he has an issue with Jeb over Valentina. There was a free seat in there for him but he would not board.

I reloaded and there was no problem this time with him boarding.

Time to launch a Space Station Core.

IIRC, rescuing does increase the cost of new hires, but since rescues are plentiful, and can allow you to surpass the roster limit of the astronaut complex, I haven't hired a Kerbal in forever.

I recently replaced the tail cones on Nike (pictured on the left) with tail chutes.  Vertical landing under the nose chute or now a "bang-down" popping the over a short strip with the tail chutes.

CKkVqEl.png

I have one stationed out in the desert.  Every time a orbital vehicle returns, I fly it to the new crash site.  Every now and then, back to Dessert to refuel.

Today I sent a reusable shuttle to Tristar Station as the remaining part of my Space Hotel challenge entry.

An usual reusable transport design in that the launcher (a slightly modified Reuso 4) and the shuttle itself land separately.

KSP 1.9 has not been very stable for me, so my current save hasn't been moving very quickly.  However, my save has been progressing.

Fuel station on Mun:  (Including a drill on the right, the main converter in the center, a failed converter landing in the back (though it's intact enough to be useful), and two rovers: A science-collection rover that scouted the site, and a fuel truck to carry fuel around the surface)
download

My Mun surface science base:  (Lab and control station in the short building, living space including hydroponics and aquaponics in the tall building)

download

First manned landing on Minmus - with all of the original 4:
