Okay, I will.

It’s… bigger than I expected.

Would you say...it's bigger on the inside?  Or smaller on the outside? :)

Awwww, shucks.  I was hoping for Disco Lights. :)

High Arctic Science

Bill travels to the High Arctic to gather some rare scientific data... wait a minute! You're and engineer! A mix up in the SPH and you were thinking of a career change anyway?

WlrOjLB.png

Before kerbal skills were added in 0.90.0, Bill was very versatile and could fly with the best of them. Maybe he had nostalgia for the old days before his piloting skills atrophied and decided to go for a drive... :)

Today I completed assembly and altitude boost of Homestead Hotel:

I built the hotel by driving each module out to the payload crane, loading it into the Mk-33, towing the SSTO out to the pad, launching, deploying, landing, and repeating the process- without recovering the Mk-3. :)

Since sleep wasn't happening, I spent another night with the team in the SPH, intent on wittling down that ToDo list on the whiteboard. Instead, we ended up playing with some left-over parts and carbon composites... and test flying the result.

I blame a not-further-to-be-named mad scientist for planting the idea. Mutter.

No problem! I love Dres! It's one of my favorite stock planets along with Eve ... I don't get why so many supposedly don't - I've heard that some say it's just a farther-out "Mun" but the Mun feels kinda flat in a lot of places; Dres often has more dramatic terrain. :)

Made the first Krewed landing outside of Kerbins SOI today. After a few hundred days cooped up on ship and Val smacking his hand any time he wanted to do something "exciting", Jeb decided to start the mission with some stunt flying:

The rest of the descent to Ike  was much less adrenaline filled:

While Bill and Bob were busy setting up the deployed science site, Jeb dug his golf clubs out of the storage pod:

Hinterland Adventure Tours

Luddous Kerman takes three tourists on a fishing trip to the lake district around South Lake Airfield

The Seawind aircraft design is based on a wonderful craft by MaikMakensi on KerbalX: Maik-McSeaplane

I've adjusted the tail section and landing gear arrangement a bit. Lands and takes off from runway or water very nicely (Scatterer default ocean effects makes take off very difficult).

Who ripped the nose off my spaceplane?TO7P6hM.jpg

The newest universal landing vehicle dubbed Komochek is a bit of a diversion from my usual overengineered monstrosities — it's simple, reliable and efficient. Consisting of just one-segment Mk3 cargo bay, filled to the brim with mining equipment, crew quarters, science payload, main engines and a compact exploration rover, and a huge fuel tank on top crowned with a shielded docking port, Komochek may not look like much, but it can pull a Jool-5 in one piece (with enough patience, of course...) and return to Kerbin to land propulsively a la Falcon 9.

It may not be the lightest vehicle to do that — it's 70t in fact, when fully laden — but it sports some serious exploration capability (that is, a rover and an ability to fly to any point on any body), hassle-free operation and low part count, which makes it far more attractive in my eyes than a huge mothership assembled with multiple launches that then attempts to desintegrate itself every time it slightly touches the atmosphere...

  • Unless you discover the vessel is from the future...
  • Unless you discover the vessel is full of alien pod things...
  • Unless you discover the ship contains a really bad contagion and is unwittingly released into the ocean...
  • Unless you're teleported to a distant planet in some far-away solar system to be studied by exo-organisms, never to see your home world again...

Sure, yeah, what could possibly go wrong! :P

I've always loved alternate Space Shuttle concepts. Here's my interpretation of one of my favorites: a partially-reusable winged booster, topped with an expendable second stage:

Spoiler

zR7CXxN.png

Powered by a single KS-25 Vector engine, the heavy Space Transportation System lumbers off the pad...

yWxRLaD.png

The KS-25 cuts off at 30 km, to coast to space.

tWzvdYR.png

At 55 km, the expendable second stage separates from the reusable booster.

WcmmvoR.png

The expendable second stage, powered by a RE-10L upper stage engine, lofts a 3.7 ton dummy satellite into a 100x100 km orbit.

1AECsEN.png

Meanwhile, the reusable first stage reenters 200 km downrange from the KSC...

3Vf6Cxq.png

...and lights it's two jet engines to land on a peninsula 250 km downrange from the KSC

Bx29Z73.png

After landing, the booster undergoes inspections and refurbishment if needed. Later, it is refueled and flown back to KSC under it's own power, to be stacked and flown again.

In my most recent save I've been trying something new, installing both KCT and USI life support. It's not as bad as I thought it would be and it definitely added interesting constraints to the game.

Today I reached a new milestone, despite playing KSP for years, designing my first Minmus SSTO that can land on Minmus and return safely.

v56hnYt.png

JcQngMl.png

It's not the prettiest thing I've ever designed, and it actually follows a similar design pattern to my LKO spaceplanes, but it did work successfully. It has a nice little service bay that holds mobile experiments, and has docking capability. The cupola unfortunately obscures the best spot for a docking port, and probably isn't very realistic or aerodynamic anyway, but it does look nice and it gives nice views. I was forced to violate (as least my) rules when it comes to docking ports and put it on the bottom rather than the top.

zrTLdYI.png

Leaving the atmosphere is a little, on the hot side, due to the fact there are four rapiers burning, (a similar thing with all the successful SSTOs that I've ever designed).

974jqWW.png

Once the jet engine mode cuts out, the rapiers switch to the short-lived closed-cycle mode, which lasts about 10 seconds to raise the apogee above the atmosphere and to give time for the NERVA to insert the craft into orbit.

Ysuvz5h.png

The NERVA is puny, but it's enough to get the craft into orbit.

lKaOd3X.png

At around this point in the flight I realized that with a full crew of three there was only enough supplies for 15 days onboard, plus the 15 days after the fact that the kerbals would have before ceasing to work meant I had little time to spare during the mission, only 30 days before the computer core I have onboard would be forced to engage.

ZeT7gnk.png

The rest of the mission proceeded without a hitch. I successfully reached the KSC, safely landing on the runway intact.

"Love the way you think."

I have a base called Capetown just there and for just that reason.  And have also experimented with Wheesleys:

If you post your craft, I would be keen to give it a whirl!

Glad you like my design! Your SSTO is also really cool!

Here's the craft file, although I'm not sure it will work with stock, as I have a few parts mods installed. It *should* work, but if it doesn't I think Restock should do the trick.

Craft File

To launch it, you do a fairly standard gravity turn until the KS-25 burns out.  Aim for an apoapsis of around 75 km, as this will allow the first stage to reenter close to the peninsula.

Separate the stages at around 50 km. Switch to the second stage at around 70 km, and burn to a stable orbit. Then quickly switch back to the first stage to do the landing. Set your Navball to the prograde marker during reentry, this will help the reusable booster stay stable and not spin out during reentry.  When subsonic, switch your navball back to stability assist and climb out of the dive.  Light the jet engines and fly until you hit land.
