What did you do in KSP1 today?

I designed a new arc-class space transporter. It's probably one of my best space planes ever due it it's functionality and simplicity, at least the final version. It's for payloads up to 3t though the other main payload determining factor these days is drag but we have no numbers for that in game sadly (such as a cw value estimate or something).

Here is the first version with a payload of 2 atmosphere landing test satellites for my upcoming Eve mission. The wing setup with the front elevators was choosen due to the f'd up COM of jet engines or otherwise perfect balance and alignment wouldn't be possible.

arcfour_sph.jpg

Here it's delivering the satellites to the Eve mission assembly. Due to the extensions that hold the rudders and the 'spine' docking them to the ship was pretty tricky. Actually had to bring the docking ports on ship and sats (they are stackable) close together and then undocked them from space plane which pushed them right onto the port on the ship.

arcfour_delivering.jpg

Then did a 2nd payload - a lander for Gilly and remodelled the plane saving 7 parts but keeping same functionality and even improving weight, drag and performance. Part count matters a lot these days. Removed the extensions that held the rudders and replaced the spine by a single wing part. Payload on this plane is during atmospheric ascent inside a fairing ...

arcfour_fairing.jpg

... which is then removed in space.

arcfour_gilly_lander.jpg

That completed the assembly of the Eve mission vessel and it was finally ready bring it's crew and prepare for launch to Minmus for final refueling. My 'space trains' are somewhat small these days due to resource/physics lag. They had 1000+ parts in former versions but nowadays I try to stay below 300 and send more ships if needed.

Did your design by any chance involve structural fuselages or 2.whatever meter service bays?

It seems like we're having the same issues.

As a matter of fact I did use the service bay. I placed a large amount of Xenon gas canisters in there as well as the probe core I used for flight control and the batteries for the station. In fact, that's where the explosion occurred. Interesting. And a little depressing, because the design I had was splendid.

:0.0:That has to be the craziest and coolest design I've seen for a spaceplane. Kudos to you for an awesome design

Blargh... didn't have a good evening in KSP. Val EVA'd to a Munar Arch to mark it with a flag, but since it was a longer trek than anticipated, I thought I'd just have the lander pop over and pick her up. Mistake... I didn't have a pilot left on board the lander, and it dropped out of the sky. The velocity was low enough that it survived the hard landing (minus a couple of solar panels), but it's sitting on its side. So, I launched a rescue mission with two kerbal pilots aboard, intending to 1) drop off a pilot at the crashed lander site and 2) pick Val up, but had a hard landing which knocked out the main lander engine. D'oh! It can get to orbit and back to Kerbin with its secondary engines, but it's going to take a third rescue mission to clean everything up, I think. Jeb was on his rest cycle, but I think it's time to call him in and get him to straighten things out...

Glad to see you hard at work again, DocMoriarty. I've been meaning to thank you since 0.24; your guide got me to the point where I was finally able to use spaceplanes comfortably. I still get comments about this one I designed from those guidelines back in those days - Mun and back for the cost of fuel:

I'm looking forward to seeing the next version of the guide when it's ready.

Anyway, last night I caught and successfully landed that piece of space junk I was shooting for from the previous night (one of the flights I had to revert), and then I got another Kerbolar space station contract. Launch to orbit was...wierd. I got the plane into space but then a bug hit where, with engines off and the craft in space, the craft's periapsis began falling and kept on going. Reverted that flight; I'll try again tonight if I get any time to play.

I started testing a rover I intend to take to Duna.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Features:

Reentry Amenities: Probe core, parachutes, skycrane with 400 dV (just in case), and landing pylons - angled to tip the rover onto its wheels gently after landing. All safely detachable after landing!

Seating: One cockpit, and one external "deck seat". Intended to be crewed by an engineer and a scientist.*

*Warranty void if the rover performs reentry with 1 or more kerbals aboard.

Science: every conceivable (stock) experiment within reach of the back seat. Need only stand up to take results and reset Materials Bay / Goo Sample.

Performance: Two large radial batteries and 4x RTG's powering four wheels and headlights, top speed >20m/s, not dependent on solar power. May need occasional recharging breaks. Max range = driver's patience.

Extras: Computer provided for deck seat. Perfect for typing up EVA reports and cataloging that science!

Heh. That is a cool twist. I love how it lights up in a blue glow, like someone sitting at a monitor. +rep

Thanks. :) I shouldn't take ALL the credit - saw someone else make a similar computer somewhere; don't recall where, but I always wanted to include something similar. I had the idea whilst positioning a light to make clicking on science experiments at night easy.

After reading the thread about what mods people thought necessary, I decided to grab the asteroid day mod. I decided this would be my first xenon powered satellite. Tried two or three days to launch the satellite atop a standard booster ship. I had plenty of Dv. First attempts flipped end over end. The drag on the telescope was more than I could handle. Tried hanging the satellite upside down between two booster sections. Made it to orbit once. Only to learn ion engines require xenon AND electricity. Lots of electricity.

I had also read the thread about parts people don't use, so I decided to put the satellite back on top with the not rockomax micronode under it. then attached two more on either side. The first is a spacer the second is my ion engine mounts. Next I used the pocket I-beam on each end and attached two gigantor arrays top and bottom. Below this I had a FL-T800 with a Terrior. And the equivalent of an orange tank with a mainsail. This wouldn't fly either, despite having around 5000 dv in the rocket engines, not counting the ion dv.

Added a fairing around the satellite. Had to remove the I-beams until the fairing was in place. Toyed with a couple different fins. The Delta wing worked great. Finally. The lifter stage burned all the way to 50k. The Terrior only had .71 TWR at this point but it worked perfectly. Only needed a minor burn to circularize. Set a node to intersect Eve's orbit. Completed the 1000+ m/s burn and still had 350 dv. Used the rest to get most of the circularization complete before the ions kicked in.

Turned on the telescope and opened the dish. That's when I discovered Eve has a slightly eccentric orbit. Half my orbit is inside Eve's orbit. Raised the Ap and circularized. Now it seems to be operating perfectly. The 4 gigantors was a bit overkill but it looks cool.

you say it flips easily, how soon are you starting your gravity turn?

I made a ship in orbit successfully for the first time in LKO.

The ship is made of three modules: An engine module with two nuke engines and a poodle engin in the center with an x200 tank for backup fuel, a fuel module of two x200 tanks and a cmd module with 3 man cockpit and science lab.

Each piece had a poodle engine with fuel tank to get it to the rendevouz as well as a large RCS tank with control thrusters and large docking ports. Each module also has a large AI block in it so each piece can be autonomously controlled if required. there are also fixed solar panels all around the ship with 2-4 z400 battery packs radially attached. the actual cockpit can be jettisoned from the science lab and has a parachute attached in the event of catastrophic or intential lithobraking attempt on a planet with atmosphere.

new

The main issue with the ship is either the force of the engines or the amount of fuel as the ship used up half of its fuel getting to the Mun. I did start at a roughly 100-150K orbit so maybe the nuke engines might have been having issues with that. Anyone got any ideas for improvements?

So last night I downloaded a couple new mods. Roster props mod (for more realistic flight computers in IVA), station science, and kolonization mod. Working on putting my first mod section on my space station right now. Also sent my first Eve rover, Solidarity, on its intercept course. My next mission is to rebuild my lunar ore processing station, put a resource scanner around the Mun (can't believe I haven't done that already :huh::confused:) and place a permanent drill colony on Minimus. Also, question: does TAC life support add any major challenges? I like things to go smoothly, but at the same time I've pretty much gotten the hang of this as it is, and I'm looking for more challenges.
