Wrapping up my 1.0.4 career reboot. Prototype CheapoTech tourist lander arrives at the Mun with a staff outing:

Jeb has a stroll around for science:

Back to Kerbin with enough dV to circularise in LKO. Having picked a deorbit node and made the retroburn it's goodbye pannier tanks:

Glide, glide, glide and flop onto the runway:

Now I am 2/3 the way up the tech tree with all facilities upgraded and over 1,000,000 funds in the bank I reckon this career is self-sustaining (as long as the tourists keep coming) so it's time for the Commonwealth Research Association for Space Hardware (C.R.A.S.H.) to bow out and hand over to the locals to carry on while I start up again in 1.0.5.

See you on the flipside, guys...

I had two contracts that I wanted to get out of the way. One was to take crew reports and the other temperature measurements, and each contract had four locations on Kerbin. Luckily, both contracts required altitudes below 15,000 feet so I did not have to worry about building high altitude planes. I have been having problems with building those because I did not have the more powerful engines that worked at high altitudes yet.

In total, I completed both contracts after about 3 hours of flying. I also made my first around-the-Kerbin flight and had fuel to spare.

First Mun landing in this save, flyby of a probe at Minmus, first Minmus and second Mun expedition on route, rovered the KSC for science (and packed a copy of everything onto the rover to transfer them up to the Orbital Science Lab for further processing), planning an interstellar test flight (to cheaply cash in on a Kerbol station contract while training the troops), planning a probe mission to Duna and preparing to launch the necessary communication equipment for it.

I had two Minmus contracts that I wanted to complete. Also, since I just unlocked the GravMax detector, I decided to send probes with 12 GravMax detectors to both the Mun and Minmus. Got a lot of science from them and completed two more contracts. I was able to unlocked more tech stuff and almost have everything unlocked. I might send two more of these probes back to the Mun and Minmus and get the rest of the science at high in-space altitudes. After that, I might plan my first trip to Duna in KSP 1.0.5.

I had an eventful KSP session on Saturday. My Minmus expedition returned, which yeilded a ton of Science points to unlock further tech tree nodes, most important of which were the Burn Together unit, and the high performance Turbojets. The former allowed me to create my dual-booster-recovery cargo launcher, and the latter allowed me to create a small SSTO for satellite contracts.

Interestingly, the inaugural operational flight of my cargo rocket was victim to the first occurrence of the Launch Failure Mod. It was pretty exciting, the thing pitched over and before I knew what was happening one of the boosters exploded. It occured too early in flight to save the second stage and cargo, so all I could do was to detatch the surving booster and fly it back to the runway. It's a small mod, but what a difference it makes to gameplay!

I started a new career game last night, my first career game actually. I've been taking things at a very slow burn so far, focusing on developing my technology and earning money before even going into orbit, though I have done a suborbital hop already. My current goals are to earn 10 million funds before going into orbit (to fully upgrade all of my facilities) and to fully extract all of the science that I can from Kerbin, also before going into orbit. I suspect I should be able to pretty much do the caveman this way, though I'm using mods that violate the rules of that particular challenge.

Silly me, I decided I might want to try going to Niedon, the Neptune-analog in the Outer Planets Mod. So I spent most of yesterday doing some preiminary testing of basic designs and the conditions of the trip.

I made a 3-seat ship that would get there with a science lander for Niedon's moon Thatmo:

And all that worked reasonably well (once HyperEdited into LKO---I'll deal with actually launching and fueling it later), but I didn't think it had QUITE enough fuel to get home. So I spent this morning making a mondo ISRU lander to grab some fuel from Thatmo. And actually launched this one to test it out on Mun. And accidentially left the cargo tank (orange Jumbo) full so built more of a lifter for it than it really needed. But even that worked OK :).

This is absolutely the tallest thing you can build in the stock VAB. The upper docking port is jammed against the rafters and there's not even a Kerbal's height between the bottom nozzles and the floor. Space-Y 5m lower stage with 2.5m SRBs.

All this was quite interesting and productive I think, but really it's just a Duna mission on a much larger scale. And the biggest part of the scale is time, not so much dV (it's only about 5200m/s from LKO to LNO). The trip to Niedon is 25-30 YEARS 1-way. And then the Niedon system is HUGE. It takes about as much time to go from the edge of Niedon's SOI to the middle, or from Niedon out to its farthest moon Nissee (which is out near the edge), as it does to get from Kerbin to Eve. So you're talking several years within the Niedon system just to get in, visit both moons, and get out again. And then another 25-30 years to get home. So if you do life support, that's a definite challenge ;).

And you'll definitely need some mod that VASTLY increases the speed at which you can warp. With the normal max of 100Kx warp, you're still taking over 2 real hours to make the trip.......

The probe design was accidentally very good for reentry. It naturally oriented itself heat shield first, and kept the orientation even when the parachutes were semi-deployed. When the parachutes were fully deployed, the probe slowly rotated to meet the ground landing struts first.

Now, about those survey contracts...

I've been quite productive today, just finished my 4th Mun mission since I started playing KSP again. I quickly discovered that I can basically "farm" science points on the Mun. My newly designed lifting stage and Mun lander has proven to be quite efficient for Mun missions.

It's probably larger and more complex than necessary, but it gets the job done very well.

On the 4th Mun mission I kinda messed up the re-entry trajectory and poor Jeb had to go EVA and literally push the ship to slow it down so it wouldn't take a month in game time to re-enter the atmosphere.

It's all been worth the effort, I have now finally unlocked that glorious NERV engine, so now I can do some proper space exploration. This is why I like KSP, it's relatively realistic and complex but also hilarious. :D Edited by Mjarf

Made my 2nd SSTO spaceplane ever, the first one was Sunday... I think I'm becoming addicted.

I named it Temperance, it can take 10 Kerbals to LKO (2 pilots and 8 passengers), and bring them back down to Kerbin safely with more or less accuracy (mainly because I can't fly a plane other than up or down). Also contains a probe core and solar panels, for unmanned missions, which take all the space in the cargo bay: so no payload other than crew.
Quite manoeuvrable, although it lacks some pitch authority, but it remains very flyable.

Action groups are:
1: Toggles Whiplashes and switches Rapiers' mode;
2: Toggles bay doors;
3: Toggles solar panels. Edited by Gaarst

Had a contract to build up my space station. Had to add a module and a cupola so that it could support as many as 12 Kerbals. Nice design and added a hub so that I can continue to expand further. I had to move the orbital adjustment module to the opposite port to clear room for docking second module. In the future I plan to deorbit the OAM when it get low and fuel and I want to try to recover it after reentry. So far, no problems and my station looks great.

After completing docking of both modules, I successfully deorbited the orbit insertion stage of the second module. It showed that the future deorbit of the OAM should go well.

Had a contract to land a outpost on Minmus. Created a very simple design and landed with no issues. I plan to return to both Mun and Minmus some more, but once I recruit some new Kerbanauts, I will start my Duna missions.

So having recently installed FAR (and realizing how many of my aircraft weren't good) I decided to start anew. The only working aircraft I really had was a fighter jet.

But I had a great urge to nuke something. So I slapped Castle Bravo on its belly and launched it by increasing the wind to well over take-off speed because the landing gear weren't touching the ground. As my brother described it, it looked like a swallow carrying a coconut.

Anyway, I decided against trying to get a safe distance away in favor of leveling KSC sooner. Somehow, the cockpit survived and was propelled upwards at 1.2km/s. This is what happened afterwards.
At some point on the way down I attempted EVA. It brought up the "Bailed Out!" screen, and apparently created 2 "Unknown Mystery Components"
