Kerbol orbit rescue

My mission to Moho ended in a Kerbol orbit on the way home due to pilot ineptitude. I tried sending rescue fuel tanks, but it seems very hard to get a close approach due to the eccentricity of the orbit and just sheer massive numbers all over the place. What is the best way of going about this?

If its in an eccentric orbit, get into an eccentric orbit with it. After that, its just as trivial as a standard docking and return.

Honestly, in this case, you're probably best off just waiting for a somewhat close encounter, then tweaking it from there. You might try raising your apoapsis until it's just inside the other orbit, but elliptical orbits are always tricky.
