Anyone still travel to Mun ye olde fashioned way?

Do you navigate to Mun by eye?

  1. 1. Do you navigate to Mun by eye?

    • Yes, I navigate by eye

    • No, I use the M-nodes

I still fly to the Mun and land at the arch (favorite landing spot, like having something to look at) without nodes. Heck, sometimes for old times sake I don't even bother orbiting, and just go in a strait line (strait lines being relative of course, in this case to my rocket). I still know where the Mun needs to be to do that.

The transfer isn't where you save delta-v from getting a precise transfer orbit, it's the capture. If your transfer is accurate enough that you don't need to adjust your periapsis, then you save all the fuel you would have spent wrangling your periapsis where you want it.

I know, in fact that is included in those ~860 m/s: with conic patch set at 0, it's easy to fine tune the periapsis right away.

but even then, I don't see how you could spend less than 260-270 m/s for circularizing into low Mun orbit by using a maneuver node.

at best, it will tell you how long the burn will take.

Most of my rockets are over-engineered for Mun landings (even the ones which I design to land on the Mun) so I usually just fly-by-eye it makes it slightly more difficulty than it needs to be and if I miss I can always just try again and adjust the orbit using the more-than-ample fuel supplies on a craft.

Sometimes I use the nodes when I'm being lazy or have something unusually big to transport there but yeah, ye olde waye is the best :D
