KSP [0.2] Saturn V replica (Kerpollo XXII)

Recommended Posts

Today I'm presenting you my KSP 0.20 Version of my Saturn V replica

The craft is made mainly made of unmodded Stock parts.

Only mods used are:

-Mechjeb 2.08

-Custom cargohold fairings (made using the faring factory tool ---> http://nathannifong.com/FairingFactory/ )

-modified version of the Mainsail engine (config edit , only disabled gimbal , thrust stats etc. unchanged)

-quantum struts (to reduce the wobble)

Like the original design the Saturn V consists of the following stages:

Stage S-IC: Using five Mainsail engines to resemble the original F-1 engine (will be dropped early during launch phase, middle engine has shorter burn time and no gimbal [like the original S-IC])

Stage S-II: Using five "Skipper" engines to resemble the original J-2 engine (will be dropped during launch phase/gravity turn)

Stage S-IVB: Using one "Skipper" engine to resemble the original J-2 engine. Used to achieve orbit. fired again for trans-munar injection

Stats:

Total launch mass:

ca. 704 tons

height:

ca. 102 m

payload for trans munar injection :

ca. 45 tons

The Apollo spacecraft is sitting ontop of the Stage S-IVB. Like in the original design the lander (LEM) sits below the main spacecraft (CSM) hidden under cargohold fairings.

In mid transfer between kerbin and the mun, the CSM is detached from the stage , turns around and pulls the LEM out of its shell.

After seperation the S-IVB can be controlled using Mechjeb ...to put it on collision course with the mun (Apollo 13 and up) ....or to put it in a solar orbit (up to Apollo13)

I DID NOT CHANGE ANY THRUST / ISP RATINGS OF THE ENGINES.

THE ONLY CHANGE I MADE WAS DEACTIVATING GIMBAL ON THE MIDDLE ENGINE OF THE S-IC

This spacecraft can be flown manual ....but it is HIGHLY recommended to use Mechjeb for control.

The download pacakge contain all modded parts except Mechjeb 2.08 and the quantum strut pack!

SPECIAL THANKS GOES TO THE INVENTOR OF FAIRING FACTORY!

WITHOUT YOU THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE

Very inventive use of Fairing Factory. You're clearly done your research on the Saturn V.

hehe yeah .....I always wanted to rebuild a saturn V in KSP and only with an outer shell like the ones you can create with fairing factory it looks halfway authentic.

ah by the way ...that's what is under the fairings:

Awesome use of Fairing Factory, I'd never thought about that before but it makes a lot of sense, and definitely looks great!

Only suggestion I'd make (if it's possible, I'm not sure) is to make the FF stages a bit whiter?

Oh yeah ...I only used the colours available by default ...but i think about contacting the fairing factory guy and ask him for permission to retexture the parts

I think the third stage's engine is a *bit* tiny in appearance. Other than that, it's a nice machine.

the size of the engine is not the real problem as it is the same engine as the engines used in the second stage (like in the original)

the problem is the stage itself .....the diameter is too big but with a smaller diameter i would not be able to carry enough fuel or hide the kerpollo craft

I could have used partclipping to stick the outer tanks partly inside the middle tank ......but that would be "cheating" ;)

Ah well i retextured the fairings really quick (with MS paint ;) )

I will upload a modified version if/as soon as i get the permission from the fairing factory guy ;)

that's what my version looks like now:

That looks way better! Awesome job, I hope to see it released soon as I really want to test that out! :P

Also, I use OSX for KSP, any chance of a .zip download?
