This is the third frame design in the High-Speed Trans-Atmospheric Courier program, the Banshee. Here is the testing frame, designated X-103-5

Looks sleek and fast on the runway

With a profile that looks like the child of a SR-71 Blackbird and a P-80 Shooting Star

Business in the front, srs bizznes in the back!

Flight profile is... difficult at present. Even though it stands at a positive angle of attack on the ground, it still needs to run off the end of the runway to start getting lift.

Once she's up, she's extremely stable, but also extremely loathe to change her heading.

http://i.imgur.com/zq6eKur.png

Though it requires a good deal of speed to stay aloft, it can land relatively easy, thanks to the airbrakes.

This is one cool looking aircraft! Awesome design work!

Ohh.. It has wings.. what I posted yesterday was just what I had done yesterday.. I've been fiddling with it today.. but it has turned out to be a failure.. the shape of the hull doesn't let me have good landing gear placement so it is pretty much impossible to even get down the runway.

I don't know if it helps, but my experience is that it's best not to go like the clappers down the runway.

This one: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/69398 trundles off the end of the runway at about 80-90 M/s and that's only just enough to get it into the air. Any faster and it twists out.

In short - have you tried taking off slower? :)

Your rear landing gears are at the very end of the plane, this is why you can't get it off the runway. Try to place them a bit behind the CoM, then it should be possible to lift the nose. You might wanna attach some safety gear at the end so you don't crash your cargobay winglets it into the runway while you lift off.

I would attach the landing gears on ( flat-attached) modular girder segments attached to the orange tanks, one at the front (with brakes disabled and steering enabled) and one a bit after the CoM position.

Can you show a pic with CoL and CoM?

Anyway, by looking at your plane I think I've learned a few things about "coating it with wings" ;)

Seriously, it looks a lot better than my usually ugly designs.

The rear landing gear that you can see in the screenshots at the very rear of the craft are not the main landing gear, those two are there just so the rear of the craft doesn't scrape the ground as it pulls up...

As I said, failed design in regards to the hull shape.. CoL and CoM are perfect though.

Yes lol..

It's a failed design.

What I'm working on now is so far much better : >

Here is a look at what I got it up to last night..

As you mentioned LordFjord... having that weight of the heavy tanks really needs to be where the landing gear attaches too.

Previously the landing gear was just placed on the wing parts... and.. all hell broke lose because of it xD

So the redesign is basically just so the craft holds it's own weight.

@KissSh0t:

I see some octagonal struts. I've read somewhere else that those are quite weak and prone to kraken attacks, so I try to avoid them.

Should be no problem to replace them with the cubic octagonal struts, those are rocksolid.

Place one flat at the bottom of that tank, then attach a horizontal I-beam where you attach the landing gear -> they will be all at the same height.

I had my troubles with mixed-height gears so I try to avoid that (random steering movement while launching, usually ending in a mess on the runway).

Nice to see how you built that frame where all the wing parts are attached. And those external seats? :D

Another small detail/question: do those struts connectors between I-Beams and the orange tank help at all?

mmmm... the octagonal struts.. At first they were sort of vibrating on the runway, but when I clipped them with the struts they stopped// Maybe I will try the I-beam in their place.

And yes about the struts, they help make it a bit stronger.

Yes~! this craft will have 2 internal seats, the plan is to have a craft that can carry up one orange tank to dock with my fuel station "becasue I cant do it with rockets hahahah", and retrieve crew from other craft.

Where is all the awesome SSTO builders?!~~!~!?? I feel lonely..

I haven't been able to find time to sit down and play KSP in the last little bit, interference of real life, and due to the fact that today is my birthday, big 3-0. Had a busy day today, and another busy day tomorrow.

That being said, here are a few things I've been working on as of late...

46055_10152161705826815_405068077_n.jpg

Heavily inspired by Vaos3712 on Youtube, this the Sparrowhawk Mk. IV. It sports more fuel than his Vegawing SSTO platform, onboard RCS, and docking capabilities.

The supersonic class SSTO "Espiranto" Mk. I gets to orbit in almost nothing flat!!

That's it for my latest SSTO's, I've been working on my Duna mission space craft. So far, due to the fact that it's held together by docking ports, it's flying like a wet spaghetti noodle.

I've been doing compact "hitchhiker can" designs.

The first is a shuttle design that has an uncluttered, clean appearance.

nlH86O2.png

4 jets, 2 nukes, lots of intakes. The big tank is tweaked down to about 1/2 full and there is still crazy amounts of DV in space.

qZ4SyEZ.png

The other is a SSTO Base and return vehicle for a pending Laythe Mothership mission. Vertical landing on Laythe with parachutes (to save fuel), A livable Base for the extended stay on Laythe, and return to the mothership in one package.

z9pH2Mg.png

I'm allowing myself a couple mods on this one to keep parts counts down on the massive mothership. Being very compact is also a must for my design. (pWing, robotics, and some lighting for fun)

Looking sexy Exo! The first one is a beauty.

Rune. Am I wrong in assuming it could be a VTOL?

Working on the principle that as it can SSTO Kerbin it can handle a Tylo descent and ascent. Maybe. :)

http://i.imgur.com/YizC95I.png

I doubt that. Kerbin takes 4.5km/s to SSTO on rocket power. The lightest delta-v budget I have gotten for Tylo is 7km/s, and I have tried to give more margin above that in my designs. My latest Tylo lander has actually 4+ km/s on each stage, and the upper one could SSTO kerbin without difficulties, I think.

In other news, you all SSTO addicts should head to the challenge section! The new instalment of the Best Stock Craft challenge is about substituting the only SSTO on the stock ships!

Rune. That is bound to create a bit of a SSTO frenzy on the forums.

Here is pure rocket SSTO "Tripod" with rover (rover should be dock back to lander before ascent, if you want to return crew :D), can land and return to orbit with 2 kerbals in stylish open chairs from any body in Kerbol system (except Jool and Eve), and, of course, can reach low Kerbin orbit and return to surface without refueling.

* dV with crew - 5568 m/s, start TWR on Kerbin - 1.16 (on Tylo - 1.45)

* start mass - 23.7t

* part count - 120

* no parashutes, you should do powered landing on Kerbin too, good training before Tylo :cool:

* 3 sets of engines can help with regulating lander's TWR, that is good for landing on bodyes with low gravity (controlled by actions keys)

Lander in action see in imgur album (sorry, only russian descriptions)

My previous Tylo landers used a lot more, but I've always worked to escape velocity (plus a bit extra to account for bad piloting) rather than to minimum orbital velocity, which in principle is a lot lower. And the engines are running at atmospheric specific impulse during the heaviest part of the ascent on Kerbin, so the craft's actual delta-v on Tylo is higher than the 4.5ish kms-1 for Kerbin... we'll see. :) I'm not intending to drop them crewed and I'll probably need a few before I get the descent profile right. :D

Given the high TWR, It could easily be a tail-sitter style VTOL with some more reaction wheels. For the moment it is a standard runway lander because simple is good!

A not entirely successful trip to Duna.

I think my dodgy, Mechjeb piloting cost a lot of delta V I didn't need to use.

Also, I couldn't run the jets upon return due to poor fuel pipe placement, so there was a somewhat improvised landing...

I'll post the craft file, if anyone's interested, once I've fixed the fuel pipe thing and done it properly.

Thanks to use of quicksave and lazy editing, these may not be in quite the right order.
