Mission 149: Tachi Maru

A Kerbin-Duna passenger liner using a similar cabin module to the Negi Maru, and a similar propulsion module to the Negi Maru and Nozomi Maru. Placed in a 500 km orbit and refueled by the WiM-6 Minmus miner.

(Launch mass: 39150 kg, fully fueled mass: 53525 kg)

Mission 151: Song Princess 11a/b/c + Wish-6 (Part 1, Part 2)

Mission 152: Duna Rabbit 3

DR-1 was the first crewed Duna lander (Project DIVA 2nd), and DR-2 was the first crewed Ike lander (Project DIVA Extend). DR-1 was set to crash into Duna, but DR-2 was supposed to be left in orbit. KASDA had mysteriously lost contact with the latter, and decided to launch a new lander (identical to Dres Rabbit 1 or 2), which would be docked with the Tachi Maru before its transfer to Ike.

Mission 148: Emerald-5 (Part 1, Part 2)

The orbiter/lander probe has finally arrived at Tylo, marking the end of the Emerald (Jool probes) program.

Y38, D153 (Tylo orbit insertion)
Y38, D156 (Tylo landing)

The insertion burn started early, owing to Tylo's large gravity well and the relatively low thrust/weight ratio of the single nuclear engine.

The orbiter temporarily moves to a 30 km orbit to deploy the lander (and reduce the amount of delta-v it needs to land on the surface), before going back to 60 km.

The landing site was going to be in the middle of Tylo's "major crater."

NtzYOUz.png

About 3 days after entering Tylo orbit, the lander began its descent.

The lander still had substantial amounts of delta-v, but better safe than sorry on a world with a high gravitational pull and no atmosphere to slow you down.

12 MINUTE BURN???? how do you have the patience for this???

I used physics warp (x3 because it started to shake at x4). But for the Negi Maru, I do have to wait for the whole burn at x1 because it breaks at higher speeds.

Mission 156: WiM-9

Miner for the upcoming Jool 5 expedition, designed for Pol or Bop. Since solar panels are too weak there, mining is mostly reliant on fuel cells (with RTGs to get started).

Mission 160: Project DIVA F 2nd / Negi Maru flight 02 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9)

Designing Interplanetary Vehicle Architecture with Fission propulsion, 2nd mission. Jool 5 expedition with 8 Kerbals.

Mass before departure burn: 342923 kg

Y38, D312 (departure)
Y40, D55 (estimated Jool orbit insertion with Tylo gravity assist)
Y40, D85 (estimated Pol orbit insertion)

5KkXa0h.png

Spoiler

Plotted course

N7kWWdg.png

Simulated burn time was almost 18 minutes, but due to physics slowdown from having almost 300 parts, the burn almost took an hour in real time.

But the whole craft had to leave as one piece as part of the rules of the Jool 5 challenge. Next time (i.e. when this ship goes to Sarnus), I probably won't send the mining rig on the same vessel.

0cqBPl4.png

After a course correction on Y39, D99, the ship will do a Jool orbit insertion burn on Y40, D55 with a gravitational assist from Tylo. Then after a plane adjustment on Y40, D80, it will enter an orbit around Pol on Y40, D85.

Mission 161: WiM-10

Y39, D39 (launch)

nUAay3Y.png

Mission 162: Topaz-2 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4)

The director of KASDA got tired of launching probes to the outer planets one at a time. So a series of landers and orbiters was launched all at once, for each of Sarnus's moons (Hale, Ovok, Eeloo, Slate, and Tekto). They would dock to WiM-10, which would act as the transfer stage. The first destination is Ovok; afterwards, the assembly will transfer to the other moons.

Mass: 56114 kg (total)

Launch vehicle: Kappa-2

The Kappa-2 launcher (7.5 m diameter) was developed to launch multiple surface base modules at the same time. It has a maximum capacity of over 100 tonnes to LKO, and is (almost) fully reusable.

The issue: much of the lower stage's propellant was spent.

Because of underestimated gravity and cosine losses, the stage runs out of liquid fuel and oxidizer long before it reaches orbit. It also uses the rest of its monopropellant.

Thus, the last resort is taken. Jeb uses his EVA pack to achieve orbit.
