Rendezvous

Bb8jDU6.png

After docking and exchanging fuel, the Negi Maru had more than enough delta-v to get home with about the same transfer time as the outbound trip.

cRugDXQ.png

Some extra fuel was left in WiM-9 so that it could get back to Bop or Pol.

Mission 164: Nozomi Maru flight 02 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3)

Landing two Modular Interplanetary Kolonization Units on Duna, and a wheeled mining vehicle for Duna and Ike. Some issues are had with the latter, but these are overcome with improvisation.

Y40, D195 (Nozomi Maru Duna insertion)
Y40, D196 (Akagi Base modules + WiM-11 landing on Duna)
Y40, D198 (WiM-12 landing on Ike, assisted by WiM-8)

Duna orbit insertion

Spoiler

Skycrane and base module undocking

5xv8cBP.png

Atmospheric entry occurs, parachutes deploy, and the skycrane fires its engines shortly before reaching the surface.

j79UtfK.png

Finding a flatter spot

Ze736u0.png

The next base module and the WiM-11 miner were deployed.

However, there was an issue with landing the miner: the engines on the skycrane weren't producing any thrust at full throttle, and it hit the ground at 18 m/s (however, the reaction wheel was able to stabilize it after bouncing).

0M2qpbx.png

The WiM-12 miner was redocked to the front of the Nozomi Maru, and they headed for Ike.

9DtRsR9.png

After arriving at Ike, the WiM-8 miner refueled the Nozomi Maru.

jXFgV0s.png

The no-thrust issue with the skycrane for WiM-11 on Duna was found to be a design flaw (the engines being too close to the main body of the vehicle), and the skycrane for WiM-12 had the same issue. A solution was then improvised: the WiM-8 miner/tanker would carry WiM-12 down to the surface.

qwEpWnu.png

A precarious-looking tower (but only temporary)

PHFgmQH.png

Hanly repairs the one broken wheel on WiM-12 (then went over to the WiM-8 tanker).

pJZL9J9.png

Now, Iwaki Base can refuel the lander shuttle (with KIS) by just driving the miner.

Nice! Now, will you ever do an LKO crew rotation at that massive station of ypurs?

Actually, I might replace the station some time later. Residents will live there permanently, just like all surface colonies.

was the forward section with the checkered fuselages inspired by the missing texture in minecraft?

No, it's inspired by this art made for a Hatsune Miku song, which is the namesake for the mining vehicle.

Spoiler

Once the first module landed and arrived at the base, there was yet another oversight regarding solar panel clearance

7TITzsi.png

Not a problem Kerbal Attachment System can't fix!

X0KcuDh.png

The solar panels were moved to a different location, the probe core was moved to the bottom of the module, and the short truss was discarded [and deleted].

The module was then moved to a lateral position.
