My son and I were very disappointed that this setup didn't work as expected:

Jebediah walked away unscathed after five whole minutes of crisping. Actually, the engine blew him gently off the top of the pod as soon as he stood up. Seconds later, the chair exploded.

So unrealistic.

I tried something simmular to this...only difference was it was actually 16 large solid fuel boosters.

It worked better if you have a Kerbal on the ground, with a mainsail going just above him.

Given how fast Kerbals can reproduce (they seem to have a limitless supply of them), I think it might be fair to describe Kerbals themselves as a cancer. Also, for all we know Kerbals aren't affected by radiation.

They're more or less fire proof at the moment.

Bob wasn't bothered in the slightest. But then, he was suffering that glitch where a kerbal gets stuck in the one pose, so nothing could've bothered him.

Maybe once reentry heating is in...

To OP. Have you heard of the Kerbal Mass Relay? It's pretty much just a Mainsail in space that is used to propel your kerbal to ungodly speeds. You should try it sometime.
