[WIN/MAC/LINUX] KSP Trajectory Optimization Tool v1.6.4 [New Vehicle Sizing Tool!]

Hi everyone, I've had some problems running KSP TOT on Mac.

I downloaded all the necessary applications, followed the instructions but the main application keeps crashing upon loading. Have anyone else had a similar issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

Which version are you trying to run and how are you trying to run it?  It's possible that after the MCR update to R2015b, the Mac "workaround" instructions I was provided with stopped working.  Do you have an error message?

I'm having a lot of trouble using the Mission Architect to get a satellite at a set distance from another reference spacecraft. I notice in the optimiser that the Distance to Ref. S/C constraint is locked to having Kerbol as the Central Body. I'm trying to plan an orbital insertion around Kerbin. Is it possible the Central Body thing is messing it up? The optimiser just keeps maxing out the velocity of the maneuvers until I'm waaay out into Kerbol's SOI.

Edit2: More info. I'm aiming for two satellites in the same 1400km SMA orbit, but 120 degrees apart. (They're comms sats for Remotetech). When I add in a constraint for the satellite to end up between 2324km and 2524km from the other one that's already up (with the Central body locked to the Sun/Kerbol), I straight away get a constraint violation of 1.36x10^7. This seems too high to me, to be just due to being out of phase.

Hey Arrowstar, I'm back at it again. Today I wanted to do an experience-gathering mission for some of my 'nauts, so I put them in a ship and into a parking orbit. I fired up KSPTOT, imported bodies from ksp, loaded the resulting file, opened mission architect, imported the initial state from the active vessel, and designed a mission that did a flyby of mun and then on to minmus. Once things were optimized to my liking, I uploaded the first maneuver to the running ksp instance. Unfortunately it was way off, it hit mun's altitude when mun was on the opposite side of kerbin. Any ideas what would cause this? I figured with a perfect bodies file and a perfect import of the orbit data, that uploading the maneuver back to ksp should likewise be perfect.

On a separate note, it seems odd that I have to save bodies to a file and then load it from the file. While I like the ability to persist the bodies I want to use, I think that importing from running ksp should automatically load those values into ksptot in addition to (optionally) saving them.

Thanks a lot for your response! I'm using KSP 1.1.1 with MCR R2013a Maci64 and the latest version of TOT. There is no error message, I can see the loading window of TOT open and then close a second or so later. Cheers.

@Arrowstar I've had a similar problem. Using bodies file and importing initial data from the active craft and then uploading the "perfect" maneuver and it completely misses planetary intercepts. Tried with both stock bodies and RSS and had the same problem. I did a quick check with a completely stock game (no mods) and found that it seemed to work fine - can you try that @jakkarth and let me know if that works for you?

At this point though, I'm not sure if it's a particular mod that messes it up, or if the further it gets from the starting UT the further out of sync it gets. Now that I know I'm not alone, I might do some more testing.

This is the problem.  You need to use the Mac build available, which is unfortunately version KSPTOT v1.1.7.  (The latest version is v1.5.4.)  See the first post.  The fellow who was maintaining the Mac version hasn't been able to help in a few versions and that means that it's woefully out of date, sadly. 

Do you have access to Windows anywhere?  That would be the easiest solution to the problem, as supporting Mac and Linux is pretty secondary due to my capabilities, unfortunately.

Thanks for the report!  Please, do whatever testing you'd like and report back.  I'd be happy to get additional data on the problem.  One thing you might check is to see if the solar system bodies (the main planets) are in the same places in KSP and in KSPTOT.

Yes, I found a bug that caused it.  I'll push a bug-fixed pre-release tomorrow. :)

I've got a question, actually it's a little problem I have.

I am attempting to use KSPTOT for RealSolarSystem, and have followed all instructions regarding installation and such to a tee, creating a new bodies file (and deleting the original KSP one, simply renaming the RSS bodies file so that it always loads from that on startup). 

I can't seem to get the multi-flyby maneuvers right.

I have not used Mission Architect before, so perhaps this is my problem? I am attempting to just do everything from that one multi-flyby maneuver tool.

 

First...I plot out the maneuver.

I then copy the Earth Departure Date into the maneuver planner, along with the burn information

(Something tells me the timing of these burns are slightly off...is the departure date different than the burn start time?)

 

But when I upload the maneuver to KSP, I get something completely different.

Looks like the burn is happening at the wrong point of the orbit. Does it work if you try it in Mission Architect?

You're not the first person to mention that there's something going on between KSPTOT and RSS.  Unfortunately I've never used RSS so I actually have no idea as to why there is a problem.    Have you been able to discover anything new since you posted this?

I can confirm that KSPTot multiflyby finder gets totally wrong values in RSS expecially for what concerns the normal +/- velocity. From what I know (I'm sorry I don't remember where I've read this info) all planet orbits in RSS are well inclined compared to reality yet their relative inclination is the right one. I think Nathankell mentioned something about RSS not working with the correct orbital inclination of the planets. So that could be maybe the problem? Just guessing. 

By looking at the map in RSS you can notice the inclination:

Can I get your (or somebody's) bodies.ini file for RSS?  Maybe just stripped down to like the Sun, Earth, Venus, and Mars?  I'll do some testing.

EDIT: And where do I get RSS? (Nevermind found it.)

EDIT 2: Okay, just to be clear, are you burning at the correct time or the correct orbit true anomaly?  Because if you're not nailing the true anomaly, you're probably going to to flying off into the ether.  From the MFMS burn output:

See the "Burn True Anomaly" line?  You need to achieve that.  So long as your burn time is reasonably close to what is displayed, you'll be fine.

Can someone try this for me?  Or give me a scenario file that places a spacecraft in Earth orbit?  (Stock + RSS only, of course.)

EDIT 3: I would still like someone to give me the information I requested in EDIT 2, but I'm now convinced, based on some modeling I did in Mission Architect, that the issue everyone is having is that people are using the departure UT in MFMS without any consideration for the departure burn true anomaly.  If true, this is partially user error and partially my fault for making things unintuitive.  The upcoming pre-release (hopefully get it out within 24 hours, so tomorrow evening) will add two fields to MFMS's "initial orbit" area similar to what is in "Compute Departure": an epoch and mean anomaly at epoch.  If people fill these in correctly, that should definitely help with placing the burn at the correct UT, and that should improve what people are seeing in KSP significantly.

There's a silver lining to all this, which is that the original algorithm in Compute Departure for using the epoch and mean anomaly at epoch was basically broken from the start and no one, myself included, noticed until now.  (Basically I needed Mission Architect to help debug it, and I didn't have MA at the time I wrote that feature.)  So included in the next pre-release is also a bug fix for that, and I more-or-less confirmed that it's working as intended now, at least for one my test case.

Anyway, thoughts from everyone on all this are much appreciated. :)

Here it is: there's also Real Solar System explanded installed. It doesn't change anything of real solar system, it just adds more bodies and makes pluto-charon a binary system. And unfortunately i've never tried to use the true anomaly as reference. As soon as I've seen that it doesn't show correct values for the burn I just plan the burn manually and then use KER as reference to start the burn. Anyway i keep using KSPtot because the planetary approach data for a gravity assist are still correct and these are still very useful info :)
