This was a small testing platform for the feasibility of different spaceplane deployment methods. It was designed with three main goals:

1. Demonstrate that an asymmetrical piggyback launch vehicle can lift and deploy a spaceplane at High Altitude/Low Orbit.

2. Demonstrate that the launch vehicle will not disintegrate on the pad, or during ascent.

3. Demonstrate successful return of deployed spaceplane (here defined as sustained period of gliding) and return of Kerbal Capsule.

As you can see, there are two large RCS modules mounted to the sides of the main tank for stability. They can hold the rocket in place pretty well. They\'re absolutely required nearing the low orbit deployment phase of the mission.
