EULA says that Squad can ditch KSP?!

Recommended Posts

Squad is not under any obligation to release any updates, expansions or titles at any time. Each release may very well be the last one.

I really take exception to this. Squad openly says KSP is unfinished, sells KSP, and now says they have no obligation to finish it?!

They have to say this...

They would be STUPID to not say this. What if they go bankrupt? What if Harvestr gets hit by a bus?(please don't), What if Mexico goes to war with other countries and cuts off trade? If they didn't say this you could sue them for breach of contract.

Just count on them to do their best and quit trying to get legal with it.

It's part of most any EULA out there, for pretty much everything Moon Goddess says. Especially the part about Harvister not getting hit by a bus. :)

They would be IDIOTS to stop making this game. It could give them an income for a very, very long time. But if something terrible happens they need to know that people are not going to sue them into oblivion.

At the very least, they should agree to release the source if they choose not to finish it.
This is their intellectual property, and they are under no obligation to release source code. No company is.

The source code isn't only intellectual property as was correctly stated by Cranium. What if for some unpredictable 'act of god' the source code gets lost.

And don't complain "you've paid for it" because you didn't. You paid for the product you currently have, not for any future releases. If SQUAD wanted to they could charge you for each and every update. They'd loose an unimaginable amount of goodwill but in theory it is within their rights.

Every EULA on earth is bogus. You just happened to read this one.... Early Access game StarForge just went down this road. People went crazy. But the devs are only trying to cover their tails in case of an accident or something. if a tornado blew squad off this earth, then thats all folks... KSP would be done... then what? your going to sue because of it?? Now lets all hope that never happens... But they have to do something to protect themselves. This whole world is sue happy. If something bad happened, would you also want to be sued? heck no.

Now on the brighter side of things, EULA's are still unproven in a court of law. and Squad is in a legal agreement with Steam and Valve to finish KSP.

This is the deal you make when you buy:

1) You get the current game

2) You get any future updates, if they are made

That's the agreement you sign up for when you buy, and I think that's very reasonable. If Squad wants to move on after a particular point, or is forced to, you shouldn't be able to sue them to keep making the game! Keep in mind that you pay a lower price because you're getting an inferior product at the moment. If they made you pay full price, then things would be different.

The EULA is standard legal crap that has to be said. If, God forbid, something happens and Squad cannot, or does not continue work on KSP, they have to cover their asses, which is about half of what an EULA is, a cover my ass document. With the support they have to continue and the financial position the finished game could put them in, they probably don't want to stop work on it. It's that simple. KSP will be around for a long time unless some unforseen force of nature does something absolutely horrible to Squad.

OP:

(1) is just looking for some reason to freak out;

(2) as (1), but specifically because today's release rendered the usual excuse ("OMG when is the next version coming out????") invalid for at least a week;

(3) has never actually read the EULA before it popped up in their face during today's install.

Take your pick.

And you came here to say that because ...? (fill the dots)

  • 3 months later...

This thread is months old, and has long since run its course. If you really feel the need to further discuss this, you can open another thread. It has been made pretty clear by the other users why that clause exists, and as such...

...Thread locked :)
