Open Source Construction Techniques for Craft Aesthetics

Everyone knows that the mk3 parts' joints are made of cardboard, and any solutions are kludgy:

But there is a solution!

Offsetting a mk3 part and then strutting it to the next part will allow for clean, strong mk3 connections:

Enjoy!

You can do this without the cubic strut and without the offset tool. Just look inside the part, place strut, turn camera to see the face of the other part, connect the strut. I've been doing this for a long time.

I do not trust the part connections!

But I love it when parts fly apart like they were elmers glued together. So awesome!

To post an image, all you have to do is click the "Insert Image" button in post menu and paste the URL into the box, or you can paste the URL into the post, then put in front of the URL and behind it. If you use imgur.com as your image host, they also provide you with an %7Boption%7D tagged url that you can paste directly into your post. I'm excited to see what kind of techniques you have up your sleeve! :)

I finally got around to making it!

Alright, here I go. This one uses the ROUND-8 (please keep it, Squad!)

I offset and rotated the tiny radial rockomax engines into the mk1 command pod to get nice retrorockets.

oh... um, I guess I'll have to host those pics some other way. oops.

I went into the Chrome page code and stole your pic links. I put in imgur so they can be viewed :

Ok, here's a part heavy one with no pics:

Take a Comms DTS-M1 and stick it on the underside of your spaceplane.

Using the rotate tool, flip it so the black side faces out.

Use offset to get the edge flush with the wing/fuselage.

Repeat until underside is covered in black tiles.

TAH-DAH! Heatshielding!

*Will not work in 1.0, I think.

You could also use this technique to "paint" an SR-71, but I wouldn't want to even try to load it!

That's a clever trick, I've used the black coloration of those myself, but not as a heatshield. When I do use them, I always amazed by the lag, they seem to be super laggy.

Actually, if the heat isn't to high, they could be a true ablative heatshield.

I think they might be massles so the physics on them doesn't effect the lag very much but because they have the entire folded-out texture loses even when closed it does cause some serious lag (feel good you aren't using the 88 antenna, it has a way bigger area loaded all the time!)

In massive amounts they are extremely laggy: I doubled the part count on one of my shuttles from 200 to 400, and I wasn't even finished the shielding! I would only recommend it for small crafts.

Also, if you get a screeny with all the tiles exploding, I'd love to see it!

They are mass-less, but that might change in 1.0. I use them sometimes to form a pointy nosecone with all three antennas.

I'ved used it with good effect.

glad to hear it!
