I'm trying to modify a texture for the sky box in ksp, I got Raredens' high res one, but wanted to add some flair to it by adding a nebula. Thing is I want to kinda make it (a little) transparent around the edges so the stars blend better and get rid of ugly "cut offs". The nebula should probably be scaled up a bit more, so its' stars are the same size/density as the background texture. What I managed so far:

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Great mod BTW.

Hello, i slightly reworked a skybox which i downloaded here a while ago (i don't know the users name anymore). i fine-tuned for my own taste it so that it looks very believable and realistic. Inspiration from 2001: a space odyssey and nasa-photographs impressions. imho the game is a lot more immersive, space looks like a truly vast abyss now.

It has low quality, i mostly turned the contrast down or so from the original, very very simple alteration, but i'm delighted of it myself :)

Here are some impressions with the altered skybox:

its very dark, but not pure darkness, you can still see stars. there are in fact quiete many of them if you watch closely, but i fine-tuned it so, that it almost seems like you can't see them anymore, if there is the sun shining or so. too bad that ksp don't change the opacity of the skybox if there is sunshine/dayside. but i think this is a good solution. you can download here. credits to the unknown user who posted the original here. :)

If anyone would be willing to take a request for a custom EVA suit, i have a simple request.

Could someone make pretty much the same thing as the stock suit, but instead of all the red decals, make them a light-ish shade of green? (like a lime green)

Thanks in advance if someone does this. I just want them for my RSS install :D

Well you're in luck, there's now a plugin that does indeed blot out the stars of any skybox when you are looking at the sun

I had an awesome Chris Hadfield moment using this pack. I thought I was looking at the dark side of Kerbin, but then I saw Minmus and realized I was actually looking at space. :D

Could I get that in .zip format? I can't figure out how to open .7z files. :)

Oh I saw that, but I figured u needed UR to replace the flare itself. I guess its just confusing since in in the UR thread. Should have its own thread. Less that hacking asset is uh.. frowned upon.

Which is exactly why I haven't made it it's own topic.. the lengthy install instruction should make it clear that it's not part of Universe Replacer or Texture Replacer ;)

There is actually another way to do this which does not involve unpacking assets like what I described, which involves TEXMOD (which is not a mod, but rather a d3d call interjection tool) it was not made for KSP but rather for all d3d9 games. Not sure how it handles Unity games though.

Texture Replacer (and Universe Replacer) can never replace that particular texture. Sadly. Of all the things that's the 1 file I actually wanted to replace when these plugins started to appear too, heh. Just my luck....

Ps.: I am also using Texture Replacer nowadays .p

Pps.: And I just remember, Mac users can't actually use the Asset Explorer nor TexMod, so they will be forever stuck with ugly flares unless they modify the asset file in windows ;P (part of the reason I had hoped plugins could do this) ;P It's a true and honest hack ;p

Well, with 7zip ;P -> http://7-zip.org/

AssetExplorer runs on wine, on Linux at least.

Um, there really needs to be some sort of guide to show how to actually do this. It doesn't make any sense.

Sure it does. Have you ever made a roller dice out of paper? It's just like that.

dice2.gif

Just make sure each square fits to the other's it touches and BAM! You have a skybox.

NOTE! It's called a skybox because it IS in fact an actual box painted on the inside :P

Not exactly. Bottom (+y) is rotated for 180° in KSP.

Having an extremely bad time right now. The files i'm downloading for kerbal spacesuits are rar and i cant convert them to png's. PLEASE help

That would be because .rar is a compressed archive file, not an image by itself. You have to extract the images into the proper places from that file. If you're in Windows, you can use 7Zip or WinRar (the first is fully free, the second has an endless "trial" mode) to open it.
