Symmetry mode

Hi, i'm fairly new to the games (anout a month or so) and ive just started to build rovers. the problem im having is when building them my symmetry mode goes vertical instead of horizontal, which is nice for the rover construction, but when building the rocket that takes it to space it makes life extremely difficult. is there a way to toggle it?

By default no. There are some work-arounds you can do.

1) if you don't mind mods there is a mod called editor extensions (you can get it on space port) that will let you toggle the symmetry modes while still in the same building.

2) you can build and save your rover in the SPH and then manually copy it's craft file from the SPH folder to the VAB folder.

Personally I recommend editor extensions, I use it all the time.

Are you in the plane hanger or the VAB?

either way, the symmetry is determined by the first piece you put down. If you're building a rocket to carry a rover, start with a rocket part first.

As an extension to the editor extensions et al, there is also the Subassembly Saver/Loader, that may or may not become a stock function in .22. You can make your rover in the SPH, save it as a subassembly, and then add it to your rocket in the VAB.

You can do better than that. Simply reorient the root part from vertical to horizontal and now you can put parts on with rover symmetry. Reorient it again to vertical and it's back to rocket symmetry.
