Sea planes?

Well, I don't have a craft to post (yet?)... I'm testing the waters (ha!) on whether I can get a stock sea plane working. Boats, sure. Floating bases, done. But I still break up every time I try to land something on the water.

Has anyone out there had any success with a craft capable of a water landing that survives to take off again? I'm beginning to wonder if all Jeb's Trial and error and error and error and error and error are signs that it's not possible in KSP. Just thought I'd ask around before throwing in the towel.

My reasoning: I have a floating base about to land on Laythe, and I'm now planning the recovery mission to get there in a year or so. While I could try to just make the recovery ship have a floating ascent stage just like the original, that means I must make a very precise landing or be forced to have the Kerbals swim for quite a distance. Ideally, I'd like to land a sea plane nearby to ferry Kerbals from the habitat to the return ship. I'm not worried about making orbit in this- just something that can fly and float! I could make do with a boat, but I'd like to explore the islands from the air too.

A Vtol would probably be your best bet, as the collision at speed is just too much, might be possible with the big pylon and loads of struts though.

It'd be interesting to see if a seaplane could take off, and you could use chutes for the landing

Horizontal sea planes aren't impossible.

I made one with structural plates as floats, but it needed rockets to lift its nose while taking off from the water.

However, I saw someone making one using intakes as floats that worked really well and also could go way faster than mine in the water.

If you want to land it horizontally you will always need much lift/a really big wingspan.

After seeing this post, I decided to take it as a challenge to create a proper HTOL seaplane. What I came up with, while neither very pretty nor particularly agile in the air, was still a pleasant surprise purely because it worked.

Behind the shroud of steel plated are rows of structural fuselages, which provide flotation while also having a relatively high impact tolerance of 70. The secondary engines you can see in the pictures are angled so that the aircraft can slow both horizontal and vertical movement without falling victim to the balance problems that plague VTOLs. They also help lift the nose out of the water during takeoff, which is necessary given the mysterious non-Newtonian friction of doom in Kerbal water physics.

Perhaps rover wheels under a girder? The rover wheels, due to their extreme impact tolerance, are used as "brakes" (i.e. drag them in the water). The girder/fuselage is used as a float once the craft is moving slowly. That would be a challenge.

Thanks everyone for the input. Sounds like the horizontal velocity is the real challenge to overcome- I could do a VTOL, but dang it... there's just something COOL about landing like a sea plane. I'm still not very good at aircraft design in general, I may have been taking this on too early in my own learning development process. But man, I really want to build that seaplane! Now that nerdboy64 showed it's possible, I've got the renewed sense of purpose.

I actually developed a couple of these a while ago (.19 or .20) because the (non amphibious) VTOL pod recovery for my space program was going nowhere. It took ages of fiddeling to get a plane with stock parts to land and take off from water, but once you get it it can be done reasonably reliable. It is actually quite nice to be able to use the flat sea instead of land with inknown terrain features, altough some of the craft can do the latter too. Some of the secrets are (like in the above plane) lengthwise structural panels, along with a heavy nose up stance to get the thing to lift out of the water and wide wings with lots of lift at slow speeds. It only needs a single engine, so no 'cheating' with rocket power or anything like that.

Currently I can not access the computer these crafts are on, but I will see whether I can post some pictures later.

I decided that two pairs of engines was cheating, so after much development I have come up with a fully HTOL design. It's also much more maneuverable in the air, and has full amphibious capability including a takeoff speed of under 30 m/s. I did it by moving the engines down, moving the tail up, and adding extra control surfaces under the wings reminiscent of the flaps used on actual airplanes. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't sit in the water quite as nicely as its predecessor, but that's not a huge problem.

I've had a bit of success with seaplanes, played around with a few ideas and finally got some to work. It's possible to land in water without any fancy shenanigans, but you will need upward thrust to get the nose up out of the water. The floats are just those structural fusulage parts.

The key is an engine thrusting down through the COM, allowing you to lift the nose. Whilst not impossible, it makes it a lot easier to slow down to the <20m/s needed for landing.

Looks like a similar approach and the same slow landing considerations: Large wings, structural fuselage for floats, and extra engines for vertical thrust to allow for slow flight and keeping the nose up.

Edit: D'oh! Due to not seeing page 2 when I hit reply, I see fireflybuzzbuzz has already brought that really nice plane over to this thread already.

I like that approach- I was getting too much wobble and structural instability by trying to attach floats to the wings. Keeping everything entralized seems to help out. Still haven't pulled it off yet, but I can feel it getting closer...

I'd also be keen on downloading your stock craft file - I find landings difficult enough without introducing the ocean into the equation, but damn that is one pretty sea plane.

Actually, landing on the sea is relatively easy, since you do not have to contend with terrain going everywhere. Also, there are a few pointers that might help if you have trouble landing. I used to fly glider planes in the real world and what works there also seems to work for KSP:

Some basics:

- Turn into the direction you want to land way ahead of time

- Do not dive down, level off well before landing and slowly descent after that point

- I keep engine power very low or completely turned off

- Fly as slowly as possible (without stalling); with FAR you can utilize flaps and brakes

- You can 'fly' the craft onto the ground, or hover along - and just above - the ground until the energy runs out and the plane lands on its own. The second option seems to have less things going on at the same time and in contrast to real life you do not have to worry about sudden changes in wind

The basic idea is that you have to ease into the landing. Going too quickly or too fast is generally a good way to lose control.

The gliding thing is what made the first two of mine possible, however, the aero model in kerbal meant that flight below 20m/s was impossible. Any input from the flaps stopped it from slowing down, i had to resort to skipping along the water with the back of the floats to slow down enough. Even B9's air brakes have limited effect.

Reverse thrust is really the only way. Having an engine pointing directly downwards allows you to create that reverse thrust by pitching upwards.

I have good news. A working sea plane

I saw all the post about trying to make one and thought i would give it a try. And after about the 20th design i got a hit

i present the KS2 A-flyinfish proto

uses 4 jet engines and can take off at 15 m/s. can take off of the water after loosing 2 engines as you will see in the pics. top speed is unknown (i really was just so excited i had got one working and wanted to show you guys )

glide into the water pointing at the horizon until you hit water then try to keep your engines out of the water till you slow down (if not they break really easy). when taking off keep plane flat to the water then SLOWLY pick the nose up and wala your in the air. Landing on the ground is the same as all planes. (all the warnings are to try to keep the 2 lower engines from breaking but if they do its ok you just will be a little slower ).

Land on water using "1" action group to deploy chutes, but only at < 50 m and < 50 m/s. Takeoff at full throttle and pull up. ASAS only suggested at high altitude/long flights, it is useless/dangerous to have on at low altitude.

I also built a model using a parachute, but that felt a bit too cheaty to my liking. On any planet capable of carrying an atmosphere ye ole chute droppe will work fine, but it kind of breaks the romantic feeling these waterplanes have.

O, I just realised that I use FAR, so technically my craft are not stock. I did not use any modparts however. The airplane I used to develop water capabilities flew nice and decent in stock too (before developing the water landing), so I am quite confident it would do fine either way. It is actually one of my most docile planes and I use it a lot for experimental setups.

At 20m/s you can safely land. I think I landed up to 40 or 45 m/s without damage. It depends on the design and technique.

At first I tried to slow the plane more and more, but the downside is that the controls get very sloppy and corrections are hard to make. You need just enough speed to land with control, but not enough to die.

I've been posting an ongoing YT series about making seaplanes. So far - this is the best iteration I've built.

Without tweaking it, I've achieved just over 76m/s at full throttle through the water, though I plan to tweak the design to see if I can exceed that. It takes off easily, can land on both water and land. It can also take off from the water really easily.
