300 part megamission

Recommended Posts

Congratulations! You are going to Jool! You now have to plan the most science you can in one transfer window.

To keep things fair, you are limited to just 300 parts so people with better computers have no advantage. You may send a maximum of 300 parts per transfer window INCLUDING transfer stages but NOT including remnants of the launch stage used to aid the ejection burn. You can use one craft, multiple craft, orbitally assembled craft, etc.

Scoring will be divided into multiple categories based on the number of transfer windows utilized.

Scoring:

Orbiters

  • Jool orbiter (not crashing) - 25 pts
  • Moon orbiter - 30 pts per moon visited (once per moon)

Manned Landers (must return to orbit)

  • Small moon (bop/Pol) lander - 50 pts
  • Vall lander - 60 pts
  • Lathe lander - 75 pts
  • Tylo Lander - 100 pts

Unmanned landers (does not reorbit)

  • Small moon lander - 20 pts
  • Vall lander - 30 pts
  • Lathe lander - 15 pts
  • Tylo lander - 40 pts

Other

  • Permanent base (failed lander) - -10 pts
  • Permanent base (actual base) - 25 pts
  • Jool atmosphere probe - 10 pts
  • Mapping/comm sat (up to 3 per planet) - 5 pts per satellite
  • Impactor (manned) - -100 pts
  • Impactor (unmanned) - 10 pts

SCORING:

1 transfer window:

2 transfer windows:

3 transfer windows:

More than 3:

MODS:

Any reasonably balanced mod may be used. Welded part mods may not be used on final crafts or transfer stages unless explicit permission is obtained from me. Hyperedit, orbital construction, or any other mod that allows circumvention of the need to launch the craft are not allowed. Mods will not be scored separately.

KETHANE/REFUELING:

Any vessel deticated to refueling or mining/refining/transportation of kethane will not be considered a scientific vessel and will not be scored as they are not scientific objectives. Kethane mapping sats will be scored.

Some definitions as asked:

Manned lander: A vehicle which descends from stable orbit carrying kerbals, lands on the surface without damage, and returns with the same kerbals to orbit.

Unmanned lander: A probe controlled vehicle which desends from stable orbit to the surface and lands without damage. It must retain continuous power supply but does not need to return to orbit.

Orbiter: A manned vessel which is in a stable orbit around a planet and completes one full orbit without any decay. It must be fully controllable and able to either return to Kerbin or able to dock with a return vehicle.
