Project Idea: Dyson Sphere?

Recommended Posts

dyson's have been discussed (no idea which thread). The problems are many. mainly a size limit, in that anything 2.3 km away is not really real anymore.

on top of that the shear number of parts killing any hope of fps.

A Dyson Ring of satellites is possible. A sphere would be subjected to massive destruction at the two nodes unless care is taken to place each ring above the other. Still the computer will be bogged down if KSP is doing calculations on thousands of individual objects in orbit.

A solid ring, such as was computer generated in Starship Trooper, is very unlikely due to tidal forces from the Earth and the sun that would distort it to the point of failure. A sphere enclosing a sun in the temperate zone with an internal biome, such as was shown in Star Trek Next Generation, is physically impossible.

Building a sustaining space colony inside a rotating bio cylinder with an artificial sun, similar to the Babylon 5 station, is feasible.

A dyson sphere of satellites would be possible but very time consuming, a single docked structure would be impossible due to the physics loading. That is, unless your orbit is perfectly circular. The closest I've seen on this forum was 2m difference which is too much, especially given timewarp's weird habit of messing up orbits.

Dyson sphere is a sphere of satelites which basically blocks the sunlight from coming out. You'd need to make enough satellites to cover the whole area of the orbit.

There's no chance you could build and send so many satellites. There's no chance for you to make enough satellites to do this on Gilly with this game.

Yes, you can make a net of satellites which would orbit on circular orbits around Sun at certain height which would somehow make it look like they cover the sphere unless you're looking at their orbits from up close. But you're not going to construct anything near real Dyson sphere.

Maybe a series of satellites around gilly.

But not a ring, let alone a sphere. Have a bunch of probe "cells" spread out about 10 km apart.

The cells would be groups of 10-15 probes docked together as small stations, allowing almost any ship going up and down to dock with a "cell" for power.

If you'll notice in the picture above your post, there is a gap region that allows for a buffer zone on those polar nodes. The satellites go around each other.

From my understanding, it's not impossible, just very difficult. Main issue being supporting the surface against the gravity of the sun, but there are proposed workarounds.

Someone up for writing a program that writes/edits a persistance file - adding the same craft to the same orbit just a few meters distanced from its neighbour - creating a satellite ring?

Map mode might work out - getting closer might fry the CPU.

Rendering distance: If I were to built (hack into orbit) a craft as long as the rendering distance, when would it appear in front of me - what if double the rendering distance?

Maybe a collaborative mega project can be started to build a network of solar modules encircling the Kerbol, set in orbit each at a rendering distance from each other. It could be done with one save file to witch everyobe could contribute. The sheer math of it makes me sick, but my realy rough estimate would be that we would need around 100 000 000 of those modules... Well, at a rate, say 50 per day, we would be able to acomplish this in the next five millenia, or so... But the effort alone will make us happy, no? :D
