There is a thing that nothing is

but yet it has a name.

It's sometimes tall and sometimes short,

it joins our talk and joins our sport,

and plays at every game

What is, oh, what is

That falls always upright

But only runs lying down?

Edit: don't mind me saying that it's easy, I said that because I used to hear this a lot when I was a child... I didn't meant to be annoying

Nop, nop... well, wouldn't actually fit, only if you take "lying down" much metaphorically, stretching its meaning to "crawling".... when you said something about water you were close to the answer. I said that only because didn't want to sound arrogant or something like that because I said it is easy.

staring off into space peacefully, as the years go by.

My parent a brilliant circle in the sky,

A beacon of light in an airless sky

When one fateful day I notice a rock, twenty meters wide at best, hurl past my surface, on towards my parent,

A flash of light is all that signals the doom of a civilization,

As my parent is turned into a spinning ball of rock, dust, and polluted atmosphere.

Centuries later, it would return to normal,

But I would receive no more visits from those cute little walking things.

What am I?
