Land on the Mun in Kerbin's Shadow

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I\'ve been playing KSP for a while now, but I\'m new to the forums. In one of my initial posts I mentioned I\'ve mainly being using mods (as before 0.13 my PC could not handle large stock rockets) and said I should probably give a stock Munar lander a go.

Well imagine my surprise when the first stock rocket I built not only landed me in the middle of Kerpernichus Crater (the name I shall use for the largest crater on Mun), but also in the shadow of Kerbin! Okay I\'ll admit that it was a complete and utter fluke, but I think some people may enjoy the challenge! Now I can go back to seeing how much mass I can land on Mun with mods :)

I\'ve attached some images but I\'m unsure how to properly display them in a post (I don\'t use forums much) so if you can\'t see them and anyone can point me in the right direction I\'d appreciate it!

EDIT: Seems the pictures are working fine and apologies to anyone else who\'s already presented this challenge... It\'s only just occurred to me to check AFTER I\'d posted :o

Not trying to be a buzzkill, but it might not be Kerbin\'s shadow.

I\'ve occasionally noticed some odd shadow-rendering effects on the Mun. For example, sometimes as I come in for a landing, a weird round shadow appears as I land, almost as if my ship were somehow landing in its own shadow. I think it might have to do with how the rendering engine traces shade . . .

I\'ve noticed other oddities with shade, too. For example, the sun-facing side of my ship is sometimes lit up, even when on the far side of the mun from the sun.

But I could be totally wrong, too. Not sure how to easily test this, since munar orbits tend to go wonky if you ramp up the time too far.

Has anyone ever seen a munar eclipse from munar orbit? Does it happen? When (relative to launch time, I mean)?

Shadows only appear a very short distance from the ship, so you won\'t see one from orbit. This is also why it appears as you land-when you come close enough to the ground for the shadow rendering to activate.

I was pretty sure it was Kerbin\'s shadow (as Kerbin was directly overhead and the shadow was round), but I\'m not so sure now! Even if it was, from what Kryten has said it\'s going to be very difficult to replicate. You\'ll have to guess where the shadow will be, then head for that point at low altitude and see if it \'appears\'.

Ah well, in any case I don\'t really think the challenge was Kerbal enough, sure it was high difficulty but not enough opportunity for wayward rockets and big explosions. I\'ll have to think of something else :)
