Efficient way to launch asteroids

Recommended Posts

If you modify the config files, you could lift just about anything into orbit, turning the situation easily win-able. I would say disallowing config file modifications.

Yes, but we need something easy and simple to many launch asteroids in short time and low amount of work. This challenge is rather to deliver a solution (whatever it will be) to this than achieve something hard.

I agree with Spruce, changing config files defeats the purpose of it being a challenge. You could just have a CM, small fuel tank, one engine and a couple struts to capture asteroids then.

If and when it comes to someone putting an asteroid into an L4 or L5 orbit, it will pretty much involve turning the asteroid into a controllable craft itself with many, many thrusters.

There is also the option of mass drivers. Basically ship-mounted catapults. That is if you just want to fly asteroids ballistically as an antiplanetary weapon. But that\'s just getting silly.

Asteroids would do good mid-space stations.

The problem is, how are we going to find the right one? xD

Asteroids such as Ceres or Eros would be awesome foundations for space stations. The construction crews would just need to establish habitats under the surface, providing a much safer and cheaper environment to build on. If it has a nickel-iron core, that would be most of the base building material right there.
