[SHOWCASE] Most insane Aircraft

Recommended Posts

So i've been playing with aircraft in my Career and i've designed a couple of insane Aircraft that well don't work to well but look awsome.

This was so uncontrolable i'm just going to abandon the 45 degree engine idea

I was bored, so i put wings on a booster.

SO what about you? any designs that are just so wacky that you gave up?

That is a pretty cool plane but I can see why it would be impossible to fly. I don't have anything too whacky, at least not saved on my new computer.

This isn't a plane but it was one of my dumber ideas... As you can imagine didn't work very well.

This one isn't very wacky but it was lets say "outside the box" for me at the time and it works quite well except when I land it on a hill and break a wing off. Probably the heaviest functional plane I have, and I've had pretty bad luck with planes so I haven't done anything too crazy.

This was my most insane aircraft that actually could take off - when it didn't hit one of the two lights at the end of the runway, what usually happened. It could fly, just never could leave Kerbin into orbit as I intended...

180 tons on the runway, with a huge storage room that could fit an orange tank. I had to use so many structs to stop it falling apart on the runway, in the end it had >600 parts.

Oh, and it never ever managed to land...

This one is about 1100 tons. It can take off from the runway, but it works better vertically. Carries 18 kerbals into orbit and can land again.

...

That is one lovely whale of an SSTO you've got there! Difficult to turn, I imagine?

Let's see...

- Have an SR-71 replica I managed to accidentally put out of the atmosphere during one flight. 1.2km/s with turbojets is a seriously awesome ride. :D

- My son whipped up an engineless helicopter in .22. Huge radial spirals of advanced canards from a single capsule, and apparently the SAS torque from the capsule was enough to spin them to create lift. Totally uncontrollable. Totally kerbal.

- My current project has been design after design trying to get a atmosphere-breathing SSTO-VTOL with a cargo bay to work. I pretty much concluded that it's impossible with stock parts, and ended up adding the pivots from the Infernal Robotics pack. That was... closer, but still not enough. There just isn't a way to get above the weight - thrust - fuel curve without either being so small or so massive that it's worthless. And what makes it harder is that the moment you burn enough fuel or attach some cargo, the center of gravity changes and your carefully tuned thrust balancing to hold a hover is totally shot. It basically requires some kind of computerized assistance to both thrust-vector and thrust-balance your hovering lift engines, or it's impossible to fly in more than one mode and impossible to land. Multiple throttle axis to control different engines might be enough as well, but that's kind of hacky.

Hey,

sometimes when I'm bored I just mess around in KSP. So this is what I resently build:

<iframe class="imgur-album" width="100%" height="550" frameborder="0" src="http://imgur.com/a/Mdm3L/embed"></iframe>

It is very controllable and you can even land this thing. It kinda looks like and flys like a zeppelin.

So now its your turn.

Probably the lifter vehicle of my Amon space station. With a crew of total 19 kerbals, it now serves as a refuelling station at kerbin's orbit, altough the LV was capable of getting it even to duna's orbit

It flew pretty well, but one of the booster stage engines got somehow torn from the craft, so i decided not to fly any further than to kerbin's HKO (lost about 500 delta-v during the accident)

For building such craft, Kerbal joint reinforcement is just a necessity. Tried to use it without, barely got the spin under control. The whole thing collapsed, as seen at one of the images.

Giggleplex777, I think you get a madman award!! That craft certainly fits the bill of most insane, love it.

Lazer Cut, really like the whitebird, that's very cool.

This was something that I did in my aircraft-only career mode before I'd unlocked jets or wheels;

QCEQsRkl.jpg

These two where from much later on in that career;

This was a glider that I made for landing on Duna, the rear section is its ascent stage to get it into LKO. Then its joined by a transfer-stage to push it out to Duna.

DQxpaQIl.jpg

Once at Duna it de-orbits and from then on it just glides in for landing.

And this is my largest SSTO, capable of taking a 20ton payload to LKO.

more details on these craft and others in the thread linked in my sig.

katateochi that is a work of art. I had no idea you could build stuff that looks this good. Are any of you using any kind of mods to add these parts, or are they available in the vanilla game?

Thanks man. No mods for these planes, 100% stock. Everything in my aircraft only career thread is 100% stock. tbh I've had much more success with stock aircraft than I've ever had with using mod parts.

Thanks guys! Took me a little while :) And I really love these blended body wing designs katateochi! Btw, I made another SSTO, not exactly an "insane" design, and this will actually acheive LKO, but it looks cool ^^

Specs:

Engines: 12 Rapiers

12 Intakes

2 NERVAs
