Mun-base location

Recommended Posts

So, I'm in the "process" of building a Mun-base. As of now (like five minutes ago) I finished landing the last of the scout probes I sent yesterday. (sidenote: Make sure probe's landing legs extend further down than the engine)

Every probe landed on hills, which would not be good for a base.

Is there a good way to figure out where the best place is? I.E, dark spots on the surface, bottom of craters, the poles, a random spot on the dark side of the mun, kraken lair, etc

Thank you :)

There are a handful of areas on the equator that, from map view, have a distinct lack of small craters. I suggest dropping your periaps down to 0 and attempting a landing in one of these areas. Try to go in on a gradual descent with your orbit barely kissing the surface. Then burn to nullify your velocity quickly (requires a decent TWR to do; 2-2.5+) when you see an area void of the tiny craters which do not show unless you are under 5km. You can also burn straight up relative to the surface, the radial vector (if you use enhanced navball) to nullify just vertical velocity and keep skimming the surface for longer if you don't see an area you like.

If these areas are not good for you, craters are your friend. They almost always have a sizable flat area in their center suitable for spread out bases and for driving around docking stuff.

In one of the smallest craters, I built this. Then versions rolled over and I wiped my KSP.

What I do is send a rover to scout locations first. When it finds a good spot, I park it with its headlights illuminating and pinpointing the flat spot for following ships.

That's a great idea. I'll use this when i build my Mun base.

what I did to make a good base, is:

send a probe into orbit of the Mun, make it's orbit @ 8 km and when you circularize you will see kind of 'good details ' of the ground, usually the best 'flat' areas are found in the equator, when you see a good spot, mark it on the map ( with your eye, obviously ) and wait till next orbit so you can start burning to land, I did this every time I made a base, and trust me, good results ;D!
