What do you think about Japanese whaling

I think it needs to stop. Many (if not all) Whale species are already endangered, these less-than-humans don't need to add to that.

What do I think of Japanese whalers? Well, I'd say this guy has the right idea.

Seriously though. The really sad thing is, most of the whale meat that they "research" doesn't even end up in anything even remotely useful. Most of the Japanese population no longer eats it so it ends up in dog food.

This doesnt makes sense. Is it some kind of luxury dog food then?

Costs of whale hunting fleet woudl be higher than gain from just selling it as regular dogs food.

Or do they just like to hunt whales, it is like some sort of sport?

Sometimes I honestly think its just to make people mad.

However, in some cases, I.E., native Alaskans, its OK because they been doing it for who knows how long. With some limits, of course. It shouldn't just be done for sport.

Until we can clone them cheaply enough to kill them for sport.

EDIT: Yeah, I got SR spacecraft Engineer!

I watched Whale Wars on TV, i was wondering would be if Japan send warships to escort whaling fleet :D

I can imagine:

Greenpeace's craft crashes through the rolling antarctic waves, salty spray blasting the hull. Its captain grimly watches the radar, eyes narrowing on a speck. He grabs his old, white radio microphone and through bearded lips orders,

"General quarters, general quarters, all hands to battle stations, all hands to battle stations."

Belowdeck the crew prepares: boots bang across the metal floors, foul-weather gear whooshes from bulkhead racks, and assault crafts' outboard motors bark and rumble. Young hearts pound in feary breasts. Soon the whaler looms on the horizon, and the captain again speaks, voice crackling through weathered speakers,

"Assault teams, deploy!"

Pressure clamps release the pontoon craft, which onward roar, black hulls splashing the surface. Within minutes they approach the whaler and to their horror see a flotilla of warships waiting.

the research is testing the effects of soy sauce and wasabi on whale meat.

i dont like the whole research smokescreen, the japanese would look better if they just admit they are going to eat them. the alaskan natives dont put up smokescreens and nobody messes with their subsistence whaling operations.

It needs to stop. It's one of the sick practices almost all countries have in some form. Even Spanish bull fighting is less immoral than this.

Whales are highly evolved mammals.

If you want to see something especially fu*ked up, search for Faroe island dolphin massacre.

The most disgusting thing about it is not the fact they're killing dolphins, but the way they do it and the behaviour of the people doing it. It is profoundly sickening so be warned.

Well so are pigs and bacon is tasty.

But seriously:

I don't understand why they do it.

Whale meat is sold in Japan but it's not very popular I hear. They had to eat it in WW2 because they had nothing else, supposedly it really doesnt taste good because it has a very high concentration of oxygen which reacts with the meat.

Could it be the fishing lobby that's pushing this because whale populations eat fish that could otherwise be sold?

If anyone has a convincing answer for the why I'd appreciate it. I'm sure they don't do it because they're evil people :)

I have tried whale meat.I have also eaten dolphin, horse, dog, and cat. I do not find any moral issues with eating animal species other than humans.

Those meateaters who get their panties in a bunch with whaling should realize that a significant population of this world also find eating pork offensive. Or killing cows to be blasphemy.

We are not talking about anyone being offended. I don't care about religion and if someone thinks cows are sacred. I respect his right to express such ideas, but I don't respect the idea and if I'm in the mood, I'll mock it.

But this is about the suffering of the animals and the anatomical, physiological, psychological and neurological fact is that whales are mammals with extremely evolved prefrontal cortex, compared to let's say a pig. Of course, both are feeling pain and are capable of suffering and have emotions, but the suffering of a whale is much higher. The more neocortical matter an animal has, the worse its suffering is. Humans are on the top of the scale, with their abstract thoughts. Human being, while being killed, is experiencing incredible fear which can not be compared to any other animal.

There is a line and the Japanese are crossing it, heavily.

If I want to eat meat, I won't be breaking my balls to catch such intelligent animal. I will resort to cow, for example. Even then, I will kill it properly. There is no need for making it suffer. Sudden total anaesthesia by electrical shock and quick disruption of cardiovascular system to induce total system collapse and finally, irreversible and terminal cerebral death. That's how it's done in a civilized world in properly run slaughterhouses.

Killing whales with hooks? That's a criminal, barbaric act. Whales aren't fishes.

This thread has no god damn place on the KSP forum. Seriously, this is ridiculous.

I hate people who cry about whaling with a passion. Here's why:

People watch that ridiculous Whale Wars show and think it is unbiased and that it is a good representation of what it's all about. They think it's cool when the stupid spoiled kids on that ship attack other ships, but suddenly think it's oh-so-unfair when the Japanese do anything back, like holding people that board the Japanese ships captive. It's piracy and they should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Same story with Greenpeace and the Russian oil rigs, but another story another time.

Also people seem to be awfully, awfully concerned about whaling while completely ignoring much more important issues. Help the god damn people in your own country to decent living standards before crying about other countries hunting a type of animal you think is cute. Same with people who think it's oh-so-unfair that the Chinese have dog farms, but happily eat their cheap chicken from chicken farms.

Focus your resources on something that matters. Think globally, yes, but start by acting locally. Care about animals? Adopt one from a shelter near you. Care about the environment? Don't pour chemicals all over your lawn to make it look nicer.

Seriously though:

THIS THREAD HAS NO PLACE ON THE KSP FORUMS AND SHOULD BE LOCKED AND/OR DELETED

To me, it's nothing to do with cruelty, or anything like that. Not even the fact that it's for food.

Just that this is a totally unnecessary threat to a group of animals, who are not particularly suited for hunting. Wales are long living, creatures who don't produce large numbers of young.

I didn't see that show, but I know of the issue from news reports in the past.

during the 1800s we hunted whales for their oil. this oil was used for lighting lamps before we started using petroleum products. this was big buisness and resulted in hunting many species to the brink of extinction. when we did this we left most of the animals behind to rot. that was a far more evil thing than to hunt them for food. the japanese are at least eating the whales. if modern whale processing is anything like whats done for livestock, then nothing goes to waste.

i find it really hard to come up with a good reason to prohibit hunting of whales, provided that only species with healthy populations are harvested and within reasonable limits. especially with so few players on the whaling market, and usually carried out by people who have cultural ties to the practice, and where few whales need to be killed to meet demands. so long as its sustainable, good hunting.

of course, the japanese are killing blues and humpbacks. but the anti whaling groups want a total, unconditional ban on whaling. they could easily compromise, but both sides are stubborn and no one is negotiating.
