I present Boaty McBoatface

A missile/launch boat that was based on, but not a replica of, the USS Freedom.

Spoiler

dnT4mdG.pngHCvdWpF.png2YqaTAF.png

She is 50 meters long, and consists of a measly 559 parts. It has a full helipad(for VTOLS obviously) and a large hangar. It also has wheesley's prositioned strategically around the ship so that it can traverse left, right, rotate clockwise, and counterclockwise. Plus the triple goliath propulsion system that can bring the top speed up to 32 m/s.

BD hasnt been updated so i have yet to arm her, but in the future there will a couple cannons and AA guns and the like. Her main armament will be whatever sort of aircraft i can fit into that hangar.

I also need to figure out some sort of hangar door. Will be difficult, gimme some suggestions.

Is that an ore tank displaced under the ship for stability?

Also, something similar to the vertical gun elevation mechanism I use (I haven't uploaded or shared any recent versions, though) along with some docking ports could work. A version of my VLS launcher's door on steroids could also work (using a custom version of the thermometer hinge), though I'm not sure if it could handle the weight of a large hangar door.

What does it need to do? Open and close? What size?

ideally i was hoping for something that can lift upward and condense kinda the way radiators retract and extend. I dont want a door that opens up because that would block the helipad and soemthing that opened to the side would just look weird.

So kinda like a bog standard garage door?

Possible, but it'll have to be a mechanical masterpiece.

Yeah. I learned that technique originally from @Azimech's Alcyone boat. It works much better than you'd think. One of the problems though is that it creates a somewhat unbalanced roll vector so when you turn sometimes it wont completely level out again. At least thats what i found on this boat.

Bro im not asking anybody to make me a garage door, but that would be pretty amazing. A limiting factor would be part count.

I made a kerbal scale one for my Duna direct hab lander a while ago

So a larger scale one shouldn't be too tricky to make. :)

I extended the deck slightly and gave it a small ramp at the stern. I was then able to launch this modified version of the Aeris 3A fairly easily out the back.

But i was unable to land it back on the ship XD

@Majorjim! I downloaded and tested that hab a few months ago and unless you've updated it, the door is broken. Along with the little rover train that went inside of it.

Oh yeah I have posted about that before, my ant hinges where broken when they changed the geometry. That is why I made a replacement thermo hinge and made this thread that you saw and replied to but most likely do not remember.

The hab door works using this hinge you just replace the ant engine with an antenna. :sticktongue: I am in the process of updating the Duna direct craft hinges but its bottom of my list of things to do..

Depending on the size of the door you need with the right application of the hinge you could make one.

Nice. I have similar doors too (for a mine clearing vehicle XD ), but I was thinking about something more along the lines of these:

He said that he doesn't want it to obstruct the flightdeck, and I believe these would be the best solutions.

Oh yeah.... No. They are way too small. Try it yourself.

You can line the top and bottom edges of the door with them and if there's still a gap in the middle you can probably fill it in with a radiator. If that still doesn't look good I'm not sure what else to tell you.

I would use the radiators on their own if they didnt spin. I wish you could turn off the rotation.

BTW Have you noticed like, way more lag on high part count vessels lately? It seems like everything slowed way down lately.

Oh, I just had another idea! It may not work depending on the size of the hangar, but you could just do MJ's thermometer hinge idea except have the door swing inside the hangar instead of outside. If the hangar is small or doesn't have a lot of clearance it may be tricky though...

This may be all nonsense anyway. I haven't ever tried my own bearing system (although perhaps I should soon)

But ther will be stuff inside the hangar. The door will hit the vehicle if it swings inward.

You should have a play with small hinges man, posting my original ant hinge sparked a lot of new thinking about tiny hinges and now there are a tonne of ways to make tiny hinges.

Good news guys, i got the Kerbhour ICBM system all fixed up, and even improved it a little bit .

Here's a little preview shot of it taken after a successful test launch (launched it and then turned it back towards the runway).

F4gNMHq.png

Yep, she's solid as a rock now, and can even survive a runway explosion :D.

Im also working on some new things regarding the Kerbhour project.

Like for example this ICBM transporter.

UZUWzsX.png

P8z1vRb.png

I created this one for the fun of it, and because i really like the look of these kinds of "specialized" transporters.

It's basically just a really long flat-bed trailer with a special ICBM transport container on top. Tough i this case it's empty and is there just for show.

Here's what it looks like in the real world:

Iocgon8.jpg

I wanted to make mine a little more personalized.

Other stuff will include:

a new supply truck that will most propably be based on the HEMTT,

CZR0Wua.jpg

a transport truck for the payload itself,

5VX3tHk.jpg

(Im gonna make it look somewhere along those lines, mainly cause the actual payload transporter for the Minuteman III looks pretty much exactly the same as my mobile command trailer and it's truck, minus the windows and comms equipment. The one on the pick is actually a transporter for an ICBM minus the warhead, just like the transporter that the KBM-300 Kerbhour system is based upon).

a missile launch control base (using Kerbal Konstruct of cource), among others.

QRnWRUE.gif

(Mine one will propably look nothing like that).

I also have some combat vehicles on storage waiting to be released. So i will propably include them with this one as "escort" vehicles.

Have a series of panels linked together by hinges.

Then at the bottom joint, have 2 I-beams on hinges, and have the I-beams (or something low friction) running through 2 columns with a little space in between for the i-beam(or whatever) to run through like a track, with docking ports at the top and bottom. Propelled upwards by junos, downwards by gravity.

Havent had much time to play lately, however managed to knock a little vid together while testing my cargo plane (Shortie) cargo drop system. At this stage all im interested in is that it comes out of the cargo bay cleanly and lands without destroying itself. Vid is of the deployment phase, you'll have to take my word it lands ok
