Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread

The Mark IV Tank is being... difficult. I [roved that it can, in fact, move, even with its wheels clipped inside the plates used for pretend tracks. Unfortunately, the tank's sides still look like they belong in a shantytown, and parts of the tank randomly fall off or crash into the runway.

To test the tank's ability to cover rough terrain, I destroyed a segment of the runway. This is the tank after driving along the flat portion of the runway for a short distance. :P

Ouch, that had to hurt. There is a full crew of five inside that tank, driver, commander, two main gunners, and a rear machine gunner, who, by the look of that smoke, just got decapitated or something by a plate of metal falling off. This isn't going to work.

Good grief, it's terrifying! If the British had these garbage bin tanks at the Somme, the war would have been over then and there!

About halfway through the test, something fell off, crashed into the tank, which spun around and the front armor plate fell off. By this time the machine gunner and one of the main gunners had been violently ejected from the gaping hole at the back of the tank. The commander and driver were also knocked out of their seats, but didn't go flying several meters into the air. :P

I think I need moar struts. Once CommanderSpock (or anyone else) gets back with me on what he recommends for the sides, I'll redo those and strut the hell out of them.

The two main gunners and the engine, the camera is looking aft.

The rear machine gunner has a little pit in the back behind the engine.

The real Mark IV tank had eight crew members, but I couldn't find anywhere to put them! I respect the people who had to sit in these things and drive them around all day. Takes guts...

Can I get the file? It will help me figure out where to put everything a bit easier.

So, the Angel Interceptor is started, here are some screen shots of the development of the project:

JFpyZOP.jpg

Hmmm...the nose looks way too big. Back to the drawing board!

PAlRX79.jpg

Now that the nose looks about right, lets start on the rest. I can always tweak it later.

uvfyTva.jpg

The rest of the aircraft is now complete(ish) and the nose looks better. This could be interesting to fly...if it gets that far...

C6pNquo.jpg

Moar struts required! And I just noticed the wheels are offset. Time to get back to fixing the AI...

And the Angel Interceptor the AI flies

Oh, and yes, I am aware that TweakScale is a mod, but I hope you guys allow it, as I'm only using stock parts, just often they are smaller and more fragile. Like that damned nose that won't stay on at speed...

Why not? Honestly, I'm going for aesthetics in this one. If I used solar panels.. I'd heighten the part count too much! And even so, solar panels don't fit it as well as plates do, and the solar panels still need somewhere to attach.

What do you mean? How would I use structural intakes for a fuselage? If I did, it's only going to be unnecessary parts.

Wouldn't that only increase the horrid part count and make it look messier?

Sorry if I'm a little snarky in this one.

Almost finished!

That looks really good so far, I get the shape coming through strongly.

Because nothing says superfluous quite like building a 250+ part turret to then slap a turreted cannon on to it... Great rotation, need to tweak pitch (she goes forward/down with ease, but something's blocking it from raising the cannon any further than in this screenshot. But this is a pretty solid platform. Of course it could should have been built smaller. Can reliably hit the top of the control tower form the default launch position on the runway...

I've done it, thrown upon myself a tank with some of the hardest angles to make in KSP. Introducing the Challenger 2!!!

This tank comes with almost dead on dimensions to the real thing and angles! I'm am very happy with myself for creating such an impressive 400+ part beast.

Comes with 1 shoot-able main gun, and 1 turret on the top of the tank that also can do some work at close range!

Im not going to release it today though..... probably not even in a week :(

This has to be a special release.... for the tank thread....

Edit:

September 7, labor day I will probably release it because... well Its special enough...

Well hope everyone really will like this one when it comes out.... Im thinking of giving it to one special person before the release. Anyone who asks and/or quotes this thread will be entered to early access to it. By tomorrow I will check and randomly pick them out of a hat or right a code in Eclipse to do it for me ;) If none enter in to it, no worries just got to wait till September 7th :)

You can just enter if you want just to see if you win, but atleast test out the tank and give me feedback in PM.

*Im doing this just for any "fans" if there is any of the tank thread, dont take that wrong :)"

Anyways!!! The pics!

Alright then, I guess I'll just have to release a T-90. :P

Ooh nice!!! Lovin these modern tanks. So much better looking than the WWII's that I've been working on! Unfortunately can't rep you after the T-80U. If you didn't get the memo already, you've inspired me to make a Challenger 2, not to mention my father was boasting about M1 Abrams and stuff. Great to see you making some tanks too! Any more your planning to make?

Thank you for the complement, and yes, I'm planning to make a few more.

I have a few old favorite replicas, the M1 and Leo-2A7. They were rather difficult to angle correctly, but the turret on the M-1 turned out pretty well imo. :)

I may redo the frontal aspect of the M-1's turret mantlet. The next tank is the Leo-2a7, one of my first tank replicas.

However, I am thinking of a potential T-14 Armata replica. No matter how ugly it looks, I can't help but savor the masochistic pleasure of angling the turret. :) Another candidate could be the Buntar tank prototype the Soviet Union made.

Mmmph.. 114.3 tons..

Azimech may have been right.

LOL, I'm thinking of burying another jet inside the fuselage where it can't be seen, if I can stop it being blocked, just to add a bit of extra top speed, maybe you could get a ram jet in there?

Also you can attach the oxstats to edges and cubic strut frames, they can be offset and rotated really far to cover gaps, plus they reflect, which looks good in the glamour shots, apparently Kerbpaint can recolour them too, I am going to test that later.

Trying to build a 2.5 orange tank ssto... It's really rather difficult.

Your nose is very draggy and heavy, I have an Improved MK3 cockpit that will help Download also lots of wings mean lots of drag, the Big-S wings would be better, but probably won't fit aesthetically.

Heh, then again the Lancaster is quite slow too. I'm considering the same thing, especially that it's soon going to be carrying all sorts of warheads.

Well, the OX-STATS don't really blend in with the rest of the aircraft, but I'll think about it.

I can't seem to be focused on just one thing!

Next thing I know, I'm working on a Bleriot XI!

You don't need any of the movement generating parts, so in theory something that just uses cube struts will do the job. I'd probably do it something like this: see below.

4gPhspd.jpg

And to add: Did some testing. Refined it. You can't use an elevon at the front, it makes life awkward. But here's a craft file that shows this as proof-of-concept technology demonstrator. It doesn't really like high g-forces, but would be more than suitable for a WWI-era biplane.

If you don't use an elevon does the antenna have wnough aerodynamic force to spin it?

Alright, I'll try my best :)
