New conic patch draw mode

Recommended Posts

I'd like to suggest adding a new conic patch draw mode (mode 4?) which would combine the good looks and spatial continuity of current default mode 3 with ability to zoom in on the patch in target context of mode 0.

Simply draw both, the "distorted" patch of mode 3 in place where it connects with out-of-SOI part of the trajectory, and undistorted patch around the planet.

When two levels of nesting are present (e.g. Sun SOI -> Jool SOI -> Tylo SOI), the most nested patch is drawn three times, once in place where it connects to Sun trajectory, once where it connects to Jool trajectory, and once around Tylo.

When a maneuver is placed on such nested (and multiplied) patch, the maneuver would be drawn on all copies of the patch. The resulting trajectory, though, would be only drawn in the most nested context (i.e. in the Tylo SOI in our example)

It's a decent solution for sure, but wouldn't it make more sense for the game to be smart enough to draw in the current context, based on what you have targeted, for instance? Drawing redundant information could potentially be confusing for newer players.

just wondering, can i change conic patch draw modes ingame?

With plugins it's possible. There have also been some recent hints that the patch mode will dynamically change in future KSP versions based on the situation (for instance, changing to draw mode 0 when you have an encounter).

I guess that's even better idea than mine, I like it!

Where in the KSP folder do I go to change the conics mode?

Go into the settings.cfg file under your ksp_win folder and open it using Notepad. Then, scroll down to (or just use the find function):

CONIC_PATCH_DRAW_MODE = 3

Change the three to a zero, like so:

CONIC_PATCH_DRAW_MODE = 0

Save the file, and you're good to go!
