How close to the sun?

Recommended Posts

on my most recent venture i headed towards moho... This was a tough one.. tougher then i thought it would be. I messed up and had to slingshot around the sun to correct myself and at one point i was low enough to be registered as flying on the surface of the sun. To be honest i was worried id worried id burn up lol. but all was good. I noticed the lower i got the greater my speed was.... it was rocketing up once i went below 10k .... just wondering how low others had got to the sun and also how much speed you managed to boost out of it with? Im tempted to try useing this method to slingshot a heavy as hell science outpost to eeloo without dragging it there in parts lol

Usually as low as it can until the temperature goes over the maximum temp. for the part, e.g. ship explodes!

Wait what, temperature and overheating actually works now? Last I tried the craft would just explode some arbitrary small distance from sun's surface without any prior overheating or high readings on a thermometer.

I've done it before...it needs so much ÃŽâ€v to happen with a Hohmann transfer. The maneuver node was for a challenge to get into low orbit around Kerbol.

Wait...look at that URL! http://i.imgur.com/t6SYEOz.png We might be close to the 1,000,000 post!

EDIT: It already happened lol.

found it:

The wiki covers the info on the lowest distance you can pass above the sun without buring up. http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Kerbol

I once got a truck into a low orbit around Kerbol, my own version of a tea pot in orbit around the moon :)

I believe a homantransfer directly to eeloo always requires less delta-V than a powered flyby of the sun, so I wouldn't recommend sun diving for your lab. Just because of the large amount of dV required to lower your periapsis in the first place. You then also need a larger dV manoeuvre at Eeloo to obtain capture.

yeah i did the math shortly after posting lol. The acceleration i managed to get was really good though. I way make an ultra light electric glider thing and see what speeds i can hit and experiment alittle. Im really not keen on the maths side of things , so im just gonna dive in :). Im presuming if i hit the atmo at a certain angle i should beable to catapalt a tiny ship at and stupidly high speed.... the point being none... but its gonna be fun comeing up with a design for a light glider :)
