Island Runway

So I haven't ventured to the Island Runway near KSC for quite some time, after an unfortunate landing, I noticed that the control tower had stairs.

I did not realise that you could climb it!

Awesome, up in the top floor it has plants overgrown and all.

Was this changed in an update or has it always been like this?

This was added when KSC was redesigned. I believe it was 0.21.

If you're surprised by the stairway in that old tower you might want to spend some more time exploring KSC. All stairways and flagpoles are climbable. You can even climb all the way up to the helipads on the VAB.

Amazing how a game can be developed with a working solar system. Yet still detail the only structures on a home planet haha.

Would it have been the update that introduced the R&D centre?

The research complex is great to explore, climb onto the rooftops and there are little walkways between some buildings.

Be carefull switching away from kerbals when they are inside buildings though, i've had them mysteriously die due to that.

Even the good ol' VAB is worth exploring. (Anrim here did so but not by choice... when prototypes fail and you have to hit the silk, you land where you land. He just got very, very lucky.)

Happened to me too. Jeb was perched on the rails of the stairs outside Mission Control to view a spaceship from afar. I switched away and back, and Jeb had apparently somehow climbed 7 flights of stairs back to the ground in a span of what must have been half a second. Presumably this would have killed him if he relocated into stairs.
