Kosmos Spacecraft Design Bureau

Kosmos, the latest addition to the Kerbal Space Program\'s stable of unstable contractors, is the product of two things- a grand vision of the future, and a lack of planning for today. Originally attracting investors throughout Kerbin for their promise of 'permanent manned-facilities' in orbit, this ragtag group of what Jeb likes to call 'college-jockeys' produced enormously heavy hunks of science for years before anyone in the investment game realized that no rockets available could propel them to orbit. The company then quickly went bust, and it disappeared from the public\'s knowledge. Years later, long after rockets became available that could lift heavy loads, the Kosmos company\'s warehouse was discovered fully intact, undisturbed, and full of dusty modules, and the new KSP was able to purchase the entire company (including the engineers, who were found living in the warehouse subsisting on tube-food and several types of rodent!) The station parts themselves were sold cheaper than the metal they were made from. Freshly employed and entirely grateful, the Kosmos engineers strive to continue to not live in a warehouse.

All Kosmos packs include the VA capsule and necessary plugins. Some packs share additional files. When installing multiple packs, feel free to overwrite duplicate parts so long as all packs are up to date.

As always, we highly recommend deleting all current Kosmos parts in your parts folder before downloading and installing these current releases.

Version 4.1 (6/12/12)

Kosmos\' extensive backlog of space station parts, along with a rapidly expanding arsenal of cutting-edge technology has lead to one of the most technically complex and comprehensive parts packs of all time. The SSPP actually contains a number of sub-series of parts, including TKS, Salyut, Almaz, and Mir, as well as a few odds and ends to flush out the parts and tailor fit them to the needs of any mission. Try the animated solar panels and RCS 'Rendezvous' engines to maximize customization.

NOTICE - To use the docking nodes, you need to select the node with your cursor and then hit 'W' once for it to work properly.

Version 3.0 (6/6/12)

In the early days of Kosmos, money was widely available and ambitions ran wild. A lone engineer produced a cutting-edge design for a URM or 'Universal Rocket Module,' one which would be large enough and versatile enough to launch the difficult payloads designed throughout the rest of the company. While brilliant, the plans were rejected by management as 'unnecessary' and 'counter-intuitive to the macro-conceptual ideascape that is Kosmos Spacecraft Design Bureau.' At one time, this engineer\'s name and identity was a mystery, as he disappeared after the company originally closed down. He was later found working at a kitchen appliance R&D department, producing high-thrust refrigerators and aerodynamic blenders. Low leading the Angara division of the company, he has helped produce a new wave of designs that strives to push Kosmos into the future, both figuratively and literally. This pack is now home to the Expedition series of parts, previously distributed in the Space Station Parts Pack.

Version 1.0 (6/6/12)

With dozens of stations in flight and several prototypical designs ominously circling the Mun, it should come as a surprise to none that Kosmos engineers have created a universal solution to Munar landing. Inspired by the way that cats always land on their feet when dropped, several engineers were injured when attempting similar aerial maneuvers, confirming suspicions that landing a station on 'all fours' would require special mechanical attention. The product of these experiments was the Powerpack, a decoupler designed to attach small fuel tanks and engines to the sides of stations, that doubles as a location to place landing legs as well. Clusters of LK fuel tanks can also be used inline for a more traditional lander configuration when placed under a VA capsule.

Who\'s behind all this?

Kosmos is a project started by Normak, CardBoardBoxProcessor, and Xemit, whom have worked together to recreate the innovative yet often forgotten Soviet/Russian space station programs, including the Salyut, the Almaz, and Mir, as well as several other smaller bits and pieces. Recently, the scope of the project was greatly expanded to include everything needed for any flight imaginable. The Angara will fill launch roles, while Expedition and LK will allow for the establishment of bases on other planets. Normak started the project by modeling a number of station parts as mockups/proof of concept, and promoted the idea among members of the Facepunch forum. Cardboard took it from there, modeling the parts in detail and texturing, producing much better quality parts than anyone could have hoped for, allowing Normak to focus on the technical aspects of the parts and quality control. Xemit got on board by volunteering to create the solar panels and radiator arrays. A number of other people have contributed indirectly by creating plugins and adding features to the game that have paved the way for our team. A warm thanks to all of you!

More coming soon!

VA Capsule Construction Tutorial.

A set of Kosmos parts has been added, these are compatible with Zoxygen and Electrial Energy plugin.

These parts have the same meshes of original Kosmos parts, and some blue stripes (for ZO2 equipment) or yellow stripes (for EE equipment).

These parts are:

- ZO2 Main System

- ZO2 filter

- ZO2 large tank

- ZO2 Small Tank (radial)

- small Battery

- large Battery

- Prograde ion engine

- Retrograde Ion Engine

- Ion RCS block

So you can build a Kosmos space station with these equipment and also add PowerSat and Dynasat panels for generating Electrical power.

This is the download link:

This is a sample space station containing these parts:

its a nice capsule, the rcs is a little unresponsive, but thats probs because it is placed at the center of gravity, and very narrow. it will likely function more realisticly, when there is an orbiting module with it also.

also, i did some ROUGH testing, and if you save the escape tower till deorbit, it will alone deorbit you from any altitude up to arround 300km, its a good little tool

the RCS rotation power is currently bugged. if you use it for moving around it si great but rotation it is awful because of a game bug.

as for the escapoe tower it is Designed to be used mainly as a deorbiting Retro rocket :) escape tower is it\'s secondary ability.

This mod is getting better and better. I wanted to download the VA, but when I looked at this picture I deceided to wait for the complete pack. I wouldn\'t be able to play wholeheartedly knowing that the VA is only the tip of the iceberg.

The VA is beautifull. It looks great sitting there on top of the rocket. Anyone got suggesitons for boosters? Ive tried a few combinations , but they all seem to struggle to reach sub-orbital altitudes. How heavy is the VA?

probably overweight. I am willing to take suggestions on it :)

I use a center core with 3 tanks and a thuster vectoring engine. then three side coupled boosters with fuel lines feeding the center. then three more cores attached to the main core feeding the boosters.

what is the escape tower looking thing used for in real life (you know what i mean). was it used as a deorbit thing then too?

It was used exactly and only for deorbiting. All components of the ship above the capsule even have name “Deorbit Blockâ€. TKS has special LES device (in Russian it is called SAS). Kosmos team, will you make TKS\'s SAS, just for completing the pack?

Also it seems that RCS thrusters are placed wrong. Was it done intentionally?

To take the pictures of the VA seen in the OP, I used Down Under pack. A single 1m fuel tank that was 3 or four meters tall, the 1 meter liquid engine, and four solid rocket boosters attached to the sides.
