Grapple: How does it work/what am I doing wrong?

The ARM update announcement says that all I have to do is arm the grapple, approach an object and it'll grab it and this can be done with anything, even kerbals. I tested on a small probe, but it wouldn't grab it. I was bumping it into the centre of the grapple and it still wouldn't do anything with it. How do I get it to work?
