Fluid Dynamics Simulation

Recommended Posts

this is one of the best ones ive seen. nasa has a few, and ive found others as well. id love to have one that accepts arbitrary shapes though.

notfruit: Just googled it.

Arbitrary shapes: just draw inside the window.

oh thats nice. i wish this thing had an import button so i can make some complex designs and see what they do.

Great find. Reminds me of what Powder Toy can on certain settings, but this one is better because it's a lot more customizable.

I hope one day a genius will put fluid dynamics into KSP. With switchable visual rendering. Today our computers aren't capable enough but in a few years time ... it could bring the fun and educational value to a whole new level.

Imagine developing your own rocket engine, jet engine or airfoils. Lifting bodies. Stuff like a turbopump, valves or maybe even a V8 with turbo. Anything could be (and IMHO should be) possible.

nah, it can be too complex for that. to do that in 3d in great deal with complex geometry and in real time, thats supercomputer work.

Sure it's supercomputer work today, but today's phones are as powerful as supercomputers 20 years ago. We won't see full fluid dynamics simulation in KSP, but I'm pretty sure in twenty years we will have computers that are able to run a simulation of fluid dynamics on 3d spacecraft in real time.

What would be too complex would be essentially designing a rocket engine (or any engine) from scratch.

If you include everything that makes modern physics and chemistry, then yes. But everything can be simplified at the cost of precision.
