I built a successful VTOL!

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to make a VTOL with no wings, basically a helicopter with jet engines instead of rotors. Here is what I came up with...

Required Parts:

B9 Aerospace

Lack Luster Labs

Mechjeb (deleted the parts, kept the .dlls and .cfgs)

MechJebandRemtoteTechforAll.cfg http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/mechjeb-and-remotetech-for-all/http://

^^^ this adds Mechjeb to all command modules and pods

Craft File: http://www.neamerjell.com/projects/ksp/Dragonfly.craft

The thrust of the engines is reduced to about 50%, which was more than enough to put it on the helipad.

I added the airbrakes so that I could kill rotational and lateral motion more quickly without having to angle the engines and have to fiddle with the throttle just to get back to something resembling a hover. All the airbrakes are keyed to a single action group.

can you give links to the mods you used?

MechJeb: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/mechjeb/

MechJeb and Remote Tech for All : http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/mechjeb-and-remotetech-for-all/

Lack Luster Labs: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/lacklusterlabs/

B9 Aerospace: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/0-20-2-b9-aerospace-pack-r3-1/

To get B9 to work with 23.5: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8bjgxv65yshg2z3/B9%20KSP%200.23.5.zip

I think that's all that is required for the craft. I actually found some updates to my mods while digging up these links. Thanks for making me do that :)

Oh, and if you want my NavBall:

Nice craft! Hugely satisfying, isn't it? Building and flying VTOLs is one of the most difficult, but rewarding experiences in the game. :)

Thanks. Hugely satisfying? Definitely! One of the most difficult things to do? That's debatable. For me, it became easy after seeing a few tutorial videos:

Once I learned to balance the craft and limit the max thrust on the engines, the rest came easy with some trial and crashing. :)
