SQUAD

The terms under which I bought KSP state that I am entitled to all future updates that are released for the game (that aren't expansions or sequels). If 0.24, an update, contains a 64-bit version for Windows, my interpretation is that I am entitled to receive a copy of it for free. So, regardless of whether or not Steam supports 64-bit games natively (though I'm pretty certain it does; the *client* is 32-bit, but it definitely should support 64-bit games), Squad needs to provide a way for me to access the x64 version. I know the terms seem to be most often used here to explain why Squad doesn't have to release any sort of updates ever, nor interact with the community to any degree, nor give me all expansions and sequels for free, but there are things that I *am* entitled to: Squad can't release x64 for Windows without somehow giving me (and other Steam users) a copy.

Wow, keep your pants on, entitled one. How bout we wait for the dust to settle before you start lawyering up?

Steam does not "support" 64-bit games natively. If you try to launch any game, regardless of operating system, it will launch the 32 bit version by default. However it will also distribute any file the developer/publisher gives it, include 64-bit executable and often can be handled through parameters on the steam shortcut. In short, you will get it, you just have to force it to run. Funnily enough, HL2 used to have a 64 bit version and Valve chose to explicitly remove it and force all users to use 32bit. I have no clue why, as the 64 bit version worked just fine for me.

The steam client itself has no need for 64-bit, it's not running more than 4GB of ram by itself and does not interfere with the programs it executes if they are forcibly instructed to run as 64 bit.

Why on Kerbin would anyone think that Squad would try to charge for this? They've stated quite clearly that the only thing that would be considered an expansion would be content developed after the game goes gold.

KSP is still in ALPHA. It's not even feature complete enough to move into BETA. Harvester made this quite clear in his last blog about contracts and budgets getting us that much closer to 'feature completion'

Once, its 'feature complete' and all the systems they going to call the final product are good it'll be time to build on those systems and develop what will be the final content of the released game. This is the phase known as BETA.

So relax, they still have a ways to go before release.

That's funny, my copy of Steam launches the 64-bit exe for Space Engineers with no tweaking or faffing about.

Because people have convinced themselves that Squad is on the verge of becoming EA or whatever and deciding to charge us $19.95 for the privilege of adding a new planet or something

Heh, 64 bit is announced after a modder enables it. The irony.

If this was meant to suggest that they only started working on 64-bit after "someone else already figured out how to do it" I would suggest that they've probably been working on this quite a while. And presumably making it a lot more stable than the current hack that is out there right now.

It's possible Space Engineers itself has an auto-detection "launcher" and Steam is just launching the launcher. That's game specific. Given the choice of two executables, 1 32 bit and 1 64 bit, you will always get the 32 bit. There is no auto-detection in Steam.

Will this update break saves? (The update looks awesome btw)

We'll find out. Given the changes I would say yes. But maybe they've gotten better and have started making checks that prevent game breaking changes being applied to previous saves :D. That would be nice at least. I'll definitely backup by .23.5 saves before installing .24 though

Well I hope it will get me back into the game, after being fed up of waiting, and the lack of new mods to mess around with, I moved on to other games.

Also, I'd like to see word from devs on whether or not we're going to have to re-purchase KSP to get access to x64 bit. This is concerning.

"Multiplayer is impossible"

KMP released

"We're doing multiplayer and we've removed any threads where we said multiplayer is impossible!"

And now this...

Do Squad need their community to tell them what is possible?

If a resources mod were to be made... (I don't actually care about resources, I'm just confirming that there is a correlation, and that something might follow it)
