biggest rocket?

Recommended Posts

There have been big rockets in the last 12 months, but no rocket will beat my first try to get into orbit with a weird contraption to which I kept adding different engines, fueltanks and of course fuellines (how little I knew of them back then) and struts left and right - pity I most likely do not have even a screenshot of it anywhere ...

From the mod BTSM. It's a manned mission to Eeloo. BTSM imposes some challenges that resulted in such a large rocket (athe mod has been altered to now have launchpad limits). One challenge is life support - you need a lot of equipment and supplies for the ~2 year journey to Eeloo and back. The other is that I don't have LV-N nukes - several technologies are on a final tier that costs 16,000 science to unlock each node. At this time I had only collected enough to unlock one of these end game nodes and chose the one with RTGs (otherwise to power that spacecraft I would have had to carry 7 or 8 "Nuk Nuk" nuclear reactors which are much bigger and heavier then RTGs at 8 tons each and the size of a hitchhiker module, solar panels are useless past Dres in this mod).

As shown before, my 12000-ton SSTO rocket lifter (seen here in 0.23):

It puts a ~1000 ton payload into circular orbit and then de-orbits itself. I could make it bigger, but this was designed to carry my large space stations into orbit.

I'm working on a new, slightly larger version for 0.24, but I don't have the full tech tree unlocked yet. My new designs are fully recoverable, with parachutes and such, and since it's descending from a circular equatorial orbit it's easy to land near KSC. I get back something like 80-90% of the cost, so even a huge design isn't expensive.

My uncrewed Eve return ship was pretty big, though not as big as the crewed version I'm working on now!

The return stages (the small 2.5m tanks at the top) were launched to a low retrograde Kerbin orbit un-fueled and required a separate launch to fill them up before departing for Eve.

Ad Astra :-D
