The Medwedian Crisis

Medwedia has succeeded in the space program greatly, as it did in military proceedings, science, economy and other things. Medwedia launched the first man into space - Potapych Wach. Medwedia was the first to land on the mun. Medwedia succeeded. But things are looking grim for Medwedia and the whole Kerbal civilization.

THE MEDWEDIAN DEMOCRATIC FEDERATION

Medwedia is a nation located on the Old Kolus continent, with the capital in Medwed. Medwedia is a very conservative country that is ruled by a president that is elected for a 6-year term (but re-elected sometimes even 5 or more times because there are no limits and because people are sometimes "motivated" by the government to choose the "right" ruler.) The current ruler is Sir Marshal President Theodor Lynden Frankenstein. The biggest foe and concurrent of Medwedia is the liberal republic of Foresti. Both nations are the biggest superpowers on Kerbin.

Medwedia employs a large space program which is heavily concentrated on Military purposes. Most astronauts are from the giant family Kerman that has roots from various parts of the world, but many Medwedian, Non-Kerman astronauts are employed.

PROLOGUE

And so it all started. The story begins now. Mun and Minmus are colonized, and settlements are planned to be constructed on other planets or asteroids. The race to other planets - one of the final parts of the space race, has started. The Medwedian Democratic Federation against The Republic of Foresti. Medwedia wants control of the planet and other planets while Foresti wants to "liberally and equally colonize space for all Kerbals". Anti-Governmental protestors are publicily executed in Medwedia while opposition parties often are in control of Foresti. Two ideologies - Conservatism and Liberalism - at battle.

Medwedia's Relations to Taheiraz were never dire but never too good. Although no foeship existed anymore since the 20 Years' War for Tobberoy Island, and Medwedia certainly was the stronger country, Taheiraz still was a regional power with many colonies and as such was one of the major concurrents of Medwedia. Often, Medwedia did favours for the Taheirean governments such as helping to suppress a revolt or giving rights to a Taheirean minority in Medwedia, and Taheiraz had to pay in the form of seceding small regions populated by a Medwedian majority near the border in the north, by letting a Conservative, Medwedian politician take over a major position or by granting North Taheiraz (also called Tau-Neirs, Tayrmark or South Tullemark, populated by Medwedians of Tullemarkish descent) more autonomy.

The Medwedian Army was marching out of Tunerideaz, or the Eastern Kerbraltar Peninsula, after suppressing a major liberalist revolt (Taheiraz's regime was similar to Medwedia due to the Medwedian influence), and a new exclave of Medwedia was to be born.

The Guardsman said to the Taheirean emperor: "Your Majesty, His Excellency currently is in the office, able to receive a visit. You are allowed to come in."

The large door of the Presidental Office was opened by two guardsmen. The President was sitting at his desk, typing. He noticed the visitors and closed his laptop.

President: "Good Morning, your Majesty. We are now deciding upon your means of payment for my favour for your government. You know, a large army operation costs much? Especially the costs for the fifers and drummers and flag holders, y'know, they get a relatively big salary because they have larger risk - they are nearly unprotected except for their revolvers."

Emperor: "Your Excellency, I am ready to hear your vampiric demand...erm...request."

President: "You know the Kerbal Space Center on your right coast? We would like to have this international launch facility for us - you know...we lack launch sites near the equator that could be used for Munar missions."

Emperor: "But it would...ruin our whole space program! The KSC! This is Ridiculous!"

The president pointed at the big red button installed at his table. "Now persuaded?"

Emperor: "Okay, okay, your excellency. I understand. But we still get access to the launch sites, yes? Please, Please!"

President: "You will still get...nearly...free access. Let's say 10 millions of Medwedian Dollars per launch. And no large projects that require the usage of many buildings. For that you have your own launch site in the mountains, right? Also one at Suderideaz, at Cape Taheir, right?"

Emperor: "Yes, but not enough launch pads and no space for large projects."

President: "Well, that's what you get. You are a Regional Power, I am a Superpower. But let's say 20 millions per Mun or Minmus mission and 40 millions per interplanetary launch, okay? Also, I might offer a small reduction in the rent price for the space station module. And I am already allowing your "weather satellites" to pass through my airspace, for Kod's sake, right?"

Emperor: "Yes, your excellency. The KSC and the islands next to it will be ceded to you."

The Medwedian President pulled out a printed treaty from his drawer and gave the Emperor a pen. After the Emperor drew his signature on the paper, the President did so with his own. The KSC was now in Medwedian hands.

CHAPTER 1: THE FIRE THAT LITS IT

TAHEIREAN ALPS, 35 KM WEST OF KSC. KSC EXCLAVE - TAHEIRAZ BORDER AREA

Lieutenant Olsen was "flying in" the new KF-25 while at the same time patrolling the border area of the newly created KSC exclave. He was right now flying over the Three Warriors' Cauldron - the mountain crater located right behind the Three Warriors, sharp peaks that "guard" the Taheirean alps. Old legends made by the Tayrmarkers, people of Tullemarkish descent living in northern Taheiraz, say that the Three Warriors are warriors that protect the Tayrmarkers, and that the cauldron is used for their cooking when they eat. This means that the Tayrmarkers often "feed" the warriors by throwing animal carcasses and large amounts of vegetables into the crater.

Olsen: "Passing waypoint twelve. Nothing abnormal."

Military ATC: "Wait, I got something on the radar. Moving eastwards."

Olsen: "Oh no, not the Forestians and their spy planes again!"

Military ATC: "I cannot identify the aircraft type. Anyway, fly there and destroy it."

Olsen: "Already on my way. Rockets armed. Wait, I got it on the radar. And now visual contact! Some strange plane!"

Military ATC: "Destroy it. We will examine the debris."

Olsen: "Firing rockets."

Suddenly, in Olsen's cabin, a beeping sound started, signalizing incoming enemy missiles.

Olsen: "By the 42 hammers of Thorwald! I got missiles incoming! Starting evasion maneuver."

Olsen: "Evading, evading, [CENSORED]! They are following me! Taking damage! I repeat, taking damage, send support!"

Military ATC: "Eagle-42 and Badger-96 are incoming for support. ETA 2 minutes."

Olsen: "I will try to hold on. But I might have to eject. [CENSORED!]"

A large hit opens Olsen's fuel tank and a small explosion as the fuel quickly combusts, strips the pilot of control.

Olsen: "[CENSORED]! The ejection handle is broken!"

CHAPTER 2: HAWK'S EYE

ORBITAL ESPIONAGE PLATFORM 18 "HAWK'S EYE", 102 KM ABOVE KERBIN

The kerbals were eating their first dinner in space right now - it was 7 hours after launch, and the time for dinner was chosen for a moment when the station would pass over Kerbin's terminator into the night. Out of the illuminator, the sunset could be seen, and all the crew members were happily eating packed kerlamb ribs and chatting about life back on Kerbin. The codename for the little staion was "Encached Orbital Science Platform 11", fooling people into thinking that the crew members had scientific and not military titles and that they grew vegetables in zero-g instead of photographing Forestian military positions.

Captain Theodor Frederiksbjerg opened another tube filled with mayonnaise and carefully smeared it onto a sausage, disallowing for any drops to form and fly through the sleeping and eating module of the station. He bit into the sausage but then realized he forgot something. He threw the hot dog into the waste container and went up to Lieutenant Thorwald Haldenby, the only other non-Kerman Kerbonaut that was in the crew.

Frederiksbjerg: "Lieutenant, we have to talk. Important topic. Let's take a spacewalk."

Haldenby: "Yes, sir. Let us put on the suits."

Frederiksbjerg: "Dear crewmen, Me and the Lieutenant will be talking for five minutes. We will take a spacewalk. You can proceed with your eating, no waiting is needed."

The two put on their spacesuits and left the ship through the airlock. Their communication was set to private so that the other crewmen would not hear the talking.

Haldenby: "Captain Frederiksbjerg, nice view, isn't it? Anyway, is it about File Omega-55, the instructions?"

Frederiksbjerg: "Yes, lieutenant. I contacted the Field Marshal before launch, he said that I should cut the case open as soon as possible and take File A out of the box. I did so."

Haldenby: "And, what are the instructions?"

Frederiksbjerg: "We shall do a orbital correction burn that takes us into a 80x80 low orbit at an inclination of 45. Like you can guess, we will be taking photography of Forestian territory."

Haldenby: "But we must make sure that the crewmen don't find out - only Sergeant Hallo Kerman, not the others, Hallo will be helping us with the photography. The activities should look like normal science."

Frederiksbjerg: "Yes, you remembered my instruction from before launch correctly. Hallo will keep his mouth shut. For anyone but us three and the officers the name of this object is "Encached Orbital Science Platform 11" and we are going in a high inclination orbit to make precise ocean depth measurements."

Haldendy: "Captain Frederiksten, I will make sure Hallo keeps his mouth shut. I also talked to Jeb, Bill and Bob before launch, they will keep it secret."

Frederiksbjerg: "You understood everything. I have been told to open File B tomorrow. We will talk in the same manner, but we take Hallo out with us too. Burn will be tonight before we have that movie night you promised to them."

Haldenby: "I am putting on Arachno-Kerbal 5 today. Borning movie, but will keep them entertained."

Frederiksbjerg: "Good. I will search in the snacks box for some nachos."

Haldenby: "Shall we go in?"

Frederiksbjerg: "Yes, Lieutenant, let's go in before out tortillas get cold."

Haldenby: "Yes sir. Hallo is probably brewing a tea right now."

FNN (FORESTIAN NATIONAL NETWORK) EVENING NEWS

The new Medwedian Orbital Science Platform has moved into a high inclination orbit that passes closely over Forestian territory, but no accusations are being made of espionage as only scientific equipment is on board. The captain of the small scientific station, Professor Helmut Olsen, has stated in a press conference before launch that measurements of ocean depth at various points of Kerbin are to be made and that a crew rotation will be performed in 5 weeks. The newest report has stated that the crew members are "highly entertained" and are very enthusiastic in following the Professor's instructions for the various scientific experiments being performed in the station.

In other news: Medwedian fighter crashes near border of exclave in Taheiraz, airplane that shot it down unidentified but "Most definitely not of Taheirean origin" as MAF Air Commodore Frederik Xaver Thorwaldsbjerg stated. Experts predict that the airplane might have been another Medwedian fighter that misidentified the KF-25 as an enemy airplane and shot it down.

CHAPTER 3: TULLEHUTS AND BROWN COATS

SOUTH TULLNISH MOUNTAIN SIDE, NEAR TAHEIRAZ

Two thousand soldiers of the 7th and 8th Tullnish Regiments to Count Frederik Albert of Southern Tullemark moved quickly through the mountains, being trained at mountain warfare highly effectively and able to take out enemies at a distance of up to one kilometer with the normal bolt action muskets issued to the Medwedian Army.

The sound of fife and drum was heard from far away due to the mountain air as the army passed through the St. Mawwlin valley, which was one of the last valleys before the Taheirean border. The soldiers moved through the village, Mawwlinsbjerg, and resisting the opportiunity to walk away from the army, desert and cure their thirst with the excellent Tullnish schnaps served at these heights, all the soldiers stayed in formation. They marched through the village, ignoring the local residents in their folk costumes (that were EVEN funnier than any Medwedian military uniform), which were in turn watching the soldiers closely. The owner of the local inn, Mawwlinsbjerg Kro, offered the officers large bottles filled with the "dragon fire water", but the officers kindly resisted, knowing that drunkedness is not a good thing when an enemy airplane can approach you at any moment.

Twenty scouts were sent forward on horseback, and have crossed the border not a long time ago, pushing into Taheirean territory, trying to stay undiscovered. But two of them were suddenly riding back, one of them having lost his Tullehut and both of them having ripped uniforms.

Corporal Frederiksten (Scout): "The Airplane! It is coming!"

Private Howwrbjerg (The other Scout): "It is big and black! Only we survived!"

Frederiksten: "It is not Taheirean, I repeat it is NOT TAHEIREAN, Sir!"

The commander of the army, General Albertsen, rode on his horse towards the two scouts.

Albertsen: "Wait...wait...you get new uniforms, no problem, but where are the other 18 scouts that I sent with you?"

Howwrbjerg: "Mowed down by the machineguns of that plane! Did not have time to flee into the nearby forest!"

Frederiksten: "He means what they call a "Forest" near here. We both hid under small bushes, being undiscovered. The plane flew away, but I think it is coming."

Albertsen: "I understand. We will prepare for an attack. ALL TROOPS, HAAAALTTT!!!"

The orders were pushed lower and lower through the line of command, and when the sergeants ordered it, the army held and the fife and drum music ended. Albertsen then gave orders for the army to move into the village.

Albertsen: "QUARTERMASTER, TWO CAVALRY SCOUT UNIFORMS, ONE PRIVATE, ONE CORPORAL!"

The quartermaster gave the two scouts new, clean uniforms and they went off to change. Meanwhile, the General was speaking with his second-in-command, Brigadier Lundby, about the possibility to use rocket launchers. The army had 20 rocket launchers packed in the wagons riding behind the army that housed ammunition, supplies and food.

Albertsen: "Brigadier, order the officers to give out the launchers to the 20 of their best soldiers."

Lundby: "Yes, Sir."

Albertsen: "Make sure everybody is ready in 15 minut-"

The black airplane suddenly crossed the valley at a quick pace.

Albertsen: "ALL SOLDIERS, GET READY FOR AIR DEFENSE!"

The bugle call for defense sounded and the soldiers got into protected positions, some still eating the sandwiches or cakes their grandmas packed in for the long march. But while eating, they were scanning the sky - especially the 20 soldiers armed with rocket launchers.

Albertsen: "USE THE LAUNCHERS SPARINGLY. ONLY 3 ROCKETS FOR EACH ONE."

And there the black airplane appeared again at the end of the valley, flying towards the army. Machinegun bullets rained at the soldiers, but they were quick to find cover, and some rockets shot towards the plane, all missing. The local residents meanwhile were fleeing away.

Suddenly, a rocket hit the airplane, and it plummeted down like a shot down bird.

Albertsen: "And...it...is...over? So quickly? WHO WAS THE ONE WHO SHOT HIM DOWN? I WANT TO HAND HIM OUT THE REGIMENTAL HONOR MEDAL PERSONALLY!"

A soldier sitting next to Albertsen: "Sir, I think it was Corporal Nielsen."

Albertsen: "Why are you waiting then? Get him to me."

Nielsen: "Yes, I shot him down."

Albertsen: "YOU ARE THE HERO OF THE DAY! YOU WILL MEET THE PRESIDENT...YOU GET TWO HUNDRED MEDALS..."

Nielsen: "Excuse me, sir?"

Albertsen: "You saved TWO REGIMENTS. You have a bright future, Corpor-erm...let's say Staff Sergeant. QUARTERMASTER!!!"

The quartermaster handed out Nielsen the Staff Sergeant uniform. The whole army was cheering, but meanwhile, two helicopters neared from the north. Twenty Special Forces soldiers in black uniforms with uberzug pickelhauben jumped out of the choppers and sealed off the area where the wrack of the unknown airplane was (two pilots crawled out of the cockpit and fleed into the bushes, unseen by any of the soldiers). The general rode toward them and asked their sergeant what the matter was.

Sergeant: "We must recover the wrack. Order by the President. You and your army will be counted as civilians. So GET AWAY FROM HERE NOW, CIVILIAN! TOP SECRET AREA!"

Albertsen (Yelling): "TALKING LIKE THIS TO A GENERAL? That'll get you to the gallows, my lad. YOU ARE ARRESTED!"

But the sergeant took out a piece of paper from his pocket where the order was written clearly, signed by the President.

Albertsen: "Okay, I think I understood. Seems like we're not needed here anymore. Bye, Sergeant."

Albertsen rode away, filled with a sense of mystery and the question for "Why?".

CHAPTER 4: ADE, KERBIN, MORNIN', MUN!

After a Medwedian spy satellite found out that Forestian activities are probable on the mun and that the enemy is planning to create a Munar base, the Medwedian president was outraged and ordered a long term habitation mission to immediately be launched to the mun. The MTM-6 (Munar Transportation Module), a new heavy lander that can carry 6 men, although untested, was decided to be the core module of the base. The base's name was decided to be Theodor Lynden Frankenstein Base in honour of the President. Today is Launch Day.

MISSION PLAN

To land a manned lander/habitat/command center on the Mun, near the Theodor Lynden Frankenstein Crater

To study and explore the environment by foot until Module A with a rover arrives

Then, module B housing several more Kerbonauts will arrive

To secure the area and prevent any intruders

To coordinate the landing of more modules and the creation of new outposts

The crew has entered the rocket early in the morning and final preparations for launch are over.

Mortensen: "Mortensen to Mission Control: We are ready for launch and all checks are finished."

Mission Control: "Alright. Go for launch. Initiating Countdown."

10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1...FIRE!

Tullinsen: "Tower cleared! Launch starting nominally!"

The rocket ascended through Kerbin's atmosphere, accelerating quickly.

Tullinsen: "We have achieved orbit. Waypoint for transfer burn is set."

Mortensen: "Good job, Lieutenant. Now we only need to get this thingy 'way from Kerbin and to the Mun, decelerate and land. Simple. Everybody understood?"

Everybody: "Yes, Sir."

SOME TIME LATER...

Tullinsen: "Transfer burn succesfull. We are on our way."

Mission Control: "Congratulations. You may now rest until the next activity."

Mortensen: "I will take a short spacewalk to say goodbye to our beloved home planet. Who wants to go with me?"

Thomdun (reading the Medwed Morning Times): "Nah, Sir, busy right now reading. Maybe Tullinsen wants?"

Tullinsen (unfolding a sleep bag): "No, sorry, haven't slept for 3 days now. 'Night."

Mortensen got out of the ship through the airlock and looked at Kerbin.

Mortensen: "Goodbye Kerbin"

MANY HOURS LATER

Thomptop: "[CENSORED], another leak in the Peroxide tank."

Thomdun: "Maybe try setting the Hypergolic pressure to less than 5"

Thomptop (Pulling a switch): "Better now. Thanks. By the way, how long until the mun now?"

Tullinsen (Sleepy, Drinking morning tea from the tube): "Not very far. Couple more hours, I guess. Good morning."

Mortensen: "Checklist finished. Prepare for Burn A, Tullinsen."

Tullinsen: "Yes, Sir. Burn will be in several minutes."

The ship zoomed past mountains, craters and marae, getting closer and closer to the surface. The ship's periapsis lay at 50.000 meters above the surface of the dark side of the Mun, and another burn brought the first module of the T.L.Frankenstein base into a suborbital trajectory, ready for landing. As the ship passed above the terrain at 500 meters per second, slowly descending, the crew put on the EVA spacesuits and fastened their seatbelts, ready for the gentle yet hard landing.

The engine was ignited to a low thrust, gently, with a G-force of less than one, but the deceleration it produced certainly was more than enough for one of the gentlest landings in history - Jeb certainly would be disappointed.

Tullinsen: "We are moving in the correct trajectory. Deceleration is nominal. Thrust automation and autopilot working well."

Mortensen: "I actually like those soft landings. The forestian crews faint because of the high G caused by their engines being switched on in the last moment while the Medwedian kerbonauts can enjoy the terrain of the Mun or simply read comics while being subjected to a G no higher than 0.5. And fuel consumption is EVEN LOWER!"

Wehrlas (using the G-force to keep a slimy fluid inside of a flask while taking out a small test tube filled with another, red liquid): See, here the G is even our friend. Look at how I can do a chemistry experiment. (The red liquid reacted with the green one, filling the cabin with violet smoke that quickly lifted.)

Mortensen: "Slowly...slowly...decelerate a bit more...we don't want to break our landing legs."

Tullinsen: "The autopilot is handling it well. But I don't trust it completely, and anyway, we're 'bit off course, so switching to manual steering."

Mortensen: "Right thing to do, Lieutenant, yes. I don't trust machines either."

Tullinsen: "A bit more to the right...yes...good lander...5 meters...4...3...2...1...engine shutoff."

Mortensen: "T.L.Frankenstein base to KSC: We got landing."

Everybody cheered and congratulated the Lieutenant on the succesfull landing. The lander righted itself up and small anchors shot into the Munar dust out of the landing legs to finally connect the core module of the first Medwedian munar base with the Mun.

Mortensen: "Crew, we have made it. Theodor Lynden Frankenstein Base was founded. Congratulations to all of you, especially Lieutenant Tullinsen. Now let's get to work!"

Mortensen (after a pause): "Mornin', Mun!"

CHAPTER 5: MUNAR NIGHT

Two new craft arrived at the T.L.Frankenstein base - a habitat for 8 more people and a experimental rover for manned exploration of the area 10 kilometers around the base. As the crew proceeded with their experiments, the munar night laid it's veil on the land east of the base, and the terminator line was getting closer. Temperatures started to fall and ice crystals started to form on the base's windows. The crew, which was enthusiastic and active at the beginning of the stay, was now bored and sleepy due to the permanent darkness. Only few EVA's were made while the sun got closer and closer to the horizon. It was a sight as if the sun, a giant object, was slowly pulled down by the legendary wolf Gurundir from northern Medwedian mythology. The sun said "Goodbye" and finally hid below the horizon just before the Rover arrived. The only source of light was Kerbin, who would point it's lit side at the mun for the first part of the night - then, complete darkness would encroach the brave Munar explorers.

Mortensen: "Okay, gonna take that rabbit for a ride. It's dark, but for one thing, it is not scary enough if it is dark, and then, for what have I got the jetpack lights? Anyway, will be in permanent contact with you."

Tullinsen: "Good. You can depart now, Sir."

Mortensen: "Gonna take it on a ride to the center of the Lunderø crater. Gonna take samples of the ground there - people say that you can find pieces of asteroids in middle of craters."

Tullinsen: "Took shovel and container?"

Mortensen: "Included in the rover kit. Along with some instruments. But remember, main purpose is to test the capability for longer manned drives on the Mun. When they first brought a rover there 60 years ago, they only drove 500 meters. The unmanned ones that came even earlier drove longer, but much slower."

Tullinsen: "But your top speed is 10 m/s, right?"

Mortensen: "Right. Okay...getting closer to that crater."

Mortensen: "Okay...reached edge...gonna take the rabbit for a ride!"

Tullinsen: "Oh no, not rollin' down! Don't tell me, sir, that Jebediah teached you?"

Mortensen: "No, Hadburgsen teached it to me. He was taught by Jeb. Hadburgsen is from the second generation of the Kerbonauts. You know, the one that flew like 30-40 years ago."

Tullinsen: "My cousin is one of them. Wait...his name is Todd Hadburgsen...ah...you know my Cousin!"

Mortensen, being concentrated on the talking, failed to pull the brakes when the rover started rolling down the slope of the crater. The rover plummeted down the slope, first hopping, then rolling down (yes, I mean the whole rover rotated), and then simply rolling down normally, but Mortensen's head hit the other seat and he fell faint...

7 HOURS LATER

Mortensen was rescued by the other 5 crew members. He was slowly carried by two people while the other three pushed the rover, which was still intact and only needed a small repair of the gyroscope to be used again.

Mortensen (awaking, on his bed in the habitation module): "Ww-ait...what...happened? I remember being on the Hoppel rover, then I hit a rock and then the rover flew and then I fainted!"

Tullinsen: "It's alright. You drove too fast and you plummeted down. Next time, sir, do not forget the brakes."

Mortensen: "I understand. So...what happened while I was out?"

Tullinsen: "The lander that brought the rover to us had some spare fuel, so we used it for eh...seismic testing. Wehrlas got nice readings, he is currently working with them."

Mortensen: "Ah...I remember hearing explosions in my sleep."

Tullinsen: "Couldn't have been because there is no air out there, but might have been caused by the vibrations that are transmitted through the surface of the Mun."

Mortensen: "I'm hungry. Can you ask Thomdun to pack out some cheese and salami?"

Tullinsen: "Yes, sir. Breakfast will be ready in several minutes. You can sleep a little more meanwhile."
