Got to spend some more time modeling today. Culled over 800 polys and added more detail (would you believe it!). Hopefully I'll get to start on the textures soon. I think I will follow Squad, B9, and many other modders' approach of completely hand-drawing the textures this time. On the conical heat shield I used one photo off the web and it made it look less natural with respect to the rest of the game.

Through the map? Does the heat shield fall through the ground?

Yea it does. It is as if it just decoupled on its own and then falls through the ground and glitches, the camera follows it as well which doesn't help lol. Maybe has to do with tweakables mod?

So, I have a question: The node inside the heatshield is intentional, right? For putting thing inside the "bowl"?

Everything that is after the shield, but before the fairing base, get annihilated.

I've had a pause in development while I focus on my personal life and work (I'm getting married :)), but I still play KSP when I find the time for it, and intend to do more with this mod. :)

My rough plan still stands though (here), and currently the Command Pod Heat shield is in alpha (you can find that here). Its similar to the Orion heat shield. Its very playable. The model is complete, but has basic textures, and I use it myself when I use the Mk1-2 Command Pod.

If you have any requests, I'm willing to listen. :)

Yes, I'll probably change this mod to work with stock heating out of the box, and use MM to add DRE support if it is installed. It really depends on what Starwaster intends to do with it.

Now that heat shields are planned for 1.0, and there especially seems to be one fitting snugly under the Mk1-2 Command Pod, I'll see where I'll take this mod. There may be no need for a specialised command pod heat shield after 1.0, so I'll probably shift my focus onto other types of shields, perhaps an inflating one.

1. I'd like some input on textures. What do you think about re-texturing the conical heat shield to look more like the upcoming stock ones? Or would you like to keep the current texture?

2. Also, what kind of heat shields do people want/need for their designs? The bucket heat shield was mentioned.

Large deploy-able balutes.

Similar to ones used in movie, 2010 - year we make contact.

various sized containers that can be placed around areas that will come into direct contact during aero-braking.

They were hidden / stored in containers until needed and then were deployed using compressed gas. The material seemed to be a mixture of resistant and ablative..

I will try to find some images or pull a section from the movie..

In summary, stock heating is tame enough that Deadly Reentry is going to be around for awhile; there will be a series of updates with the first being tonight. (think of it as Deadly Reentry Lite)

New version here supporting stock heating. Waiting for Starwaster to release DRE supporting KSP 1.0. Until then, enjoy the stock heat! (I do intend to support both once he releases it! :))

Hi, Prismatech. When installing mods, it's always a good idea to delete the mod directory before installing the new version. :)

Delete the OblivionAerospace directory in your GameData folder and install it again.

A small parts package of heat shields that also works with the Deadly Reentry (DRE) plugin by Starwaster soonâ„¢! :)

Features:

  • Currently features the Conical Heat Shield inspired by the sphere-cone heat shield on the Mars Science Laboratory.
    • Comes in three sizes: 1.25m, 2.5m, and 3.75m.
    • Works great with Ferram Aerospace Research (FAR) by ferram4, in that sphere-cone shaped heat shields offer greater control (by lift) over blunt ones.
    • Comes with an auto-shroud adapter that meets flush with the shield. It works just like the stock heat shields. Just add something to the heat shield's bottom node (like a decoupler) and the shroud/adapter will appear!
    • Supports the Deadly Reentry plugin by Starwaster, based on the works by NathanKell, ialdabaoth (who is awesome), and r4m0n.
    • Unlike the heat shields in DRE, the Conical Heat Shield does not have an omni-decoupler. Instead, it has a single decoupler on the top attachment point (yellow/black ring), allowing for more custom designs.

Known issues:

  • NB! Waiting for Starwaster to release a version of DRE to support KSP 1.0. Until then, this mod does not support DRE, only the stock heat model.

Future:

  • More heat shields based on real-life ones, like a Galileo-style reflective heat shield.
  • I've been playing with the idea of a giant heat shield with a "hatch" at the center, allowing for engines to fire through it once the hatch is open, allowing for a more realistic spaceship design with g-forces pointing the same direction during both burns and aerobraking (like the one in BBC's documentary Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets).
  • I have plans on making all heat shields tweakable in size, like the brilliant Procedural Fairings mod by e-dog.

Installation

Install by merging the `GameData` folder in the zip with the `GameData` folder in your KSP install.

  • I highly recommend Deadly Reentry for more realistic re-entry and heating.
  • I also recommend trying out Rareden's really good-looking heat shields parts mod in his thread over here. :)

Changelog

v0.1.4

  • Maintenance release to have the heat shields support stock heating. Does not support DRE until Starwaster releases a version compatible with KSP 1.0 in a few days.
  • Not backwards compatible with previous versions of this mod (if you really, really need this, send me a message on the forums and I'll help you fix your save so it magically works with the new version :)).
  • Command Pod Heat Shield still in the works, but textures are WIP, so I moved it to v0.2.0 (alpha for it shortly).
  • Oh, and the mod is using ModuleManager now. :)
