Planning to start a collection of small part pack mods [Dev build available (V0.1)]

Hmm I've just realized that my title and intentions should be more clear. When I say mini part packs, I mean like little sets and one off parts. Not necissarily miniature things, although I can definately see why there's been some confusion. My first release just did happen to end up being a miniaturized gemini analogue. (I still feel 1.875m is a better size to represent a kerbal gemini, but I've wanted to see what I could pull off working with the 1.25m restriction.)

So this name would be just for this set of parts. Sorry, I should probably re-title the thread.

I re-textured the foil area of the engine. It's now "hand painted" rather than a simple foil image. I think it's a better fit and I feel better using it, since I actually made it.

The IVA looks nice. I can't believe two Kerbals actually fit into that pod. Love those huge windows (at least the perspective on your pic makes them look huge).

Those three grey screens are gonne be RPMs I assume, right?

About the exterior, is the pod and the nosecone one part or are they seperate?

Oh yeah, are you not using normalmaps for these parts? I think they could look much better with them, especially the service module.

The Nose is a separate piece from the pod. Just about all the normal maps are finished but not all of the screenshots are current.

  1. +1 for Zoidberg!
  2. I suggest Janus as a name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janus
  3. Whats wrong with the one [two seater] you have now? (Radish I think it's called)

There's nothing wrong with the Radish, I just wanted to try and work with some limitations, it can make things interesting. And I figured that not everyone who wants a small 2 kerbal pod wants a big parts pack with it. This one is just 5 parts; Pod, Nose, Service module, Monopropellant Engine, and a twin nozzle 1.25m Engine.

That's a good call. I really love the Onion, Radish, and Spud but since .25 I've cut them and KW Rocketry from my mods like to play "mostly" stock parts (I did re-install TurboNisu's parts because I use the "Skeletal" fuel tank for my otherwise stock SLS knockoff's ICPS stage) - and I WOULD love to use this little gem to get a 2 kerbal pod into my stable.

TurboNisu's parts and this would pretty much fill in all the parts gaps in my mind.

This is quickly going to go to the top of my mod list! Awesome work. Glad to see you're getting back into modding Orionkerman.

I think the first thing I'm going to do when you release this is build a mini-Big Gemini.

Hey man, do you have a general idea when you'll make this available? Or maybe a better question is how much work you think you have left to do before some kind of release? That Gemini looks so pretty; I want to fly it!

Actually I think this is far enough along in development that I can start bringing out Dev builds for those that want to give it a go early. The download and additional information is in the OP.

Corvus-Alpha: a version designed for low orbit missions, and as a stopgap until a longer ranged version could be built, it was launched on a standard Weevil-c booster with a 1.875 meter interim stage.

As with all Weevle series boosters, the outermost engines are dropped, saving weight, though at the cost of thrust.

The second stage is a shortened and re-engined version of the second stage of the yet-named launcher for the Corvus-Beta, which is still under development.

Once in orbit, it has more then enough fuel to reach anywhere in a low orbit of similar inclination.

Init. Feedback:

For DRE, I wouldn't prioritize it. The 1.25 heatshield and decoupler combo look like they are a normal part of the stack.

For RCS, I am going to play with the relative power of the ports on the SM, it's a littleeeee out of balance as is, but not enough to be much of an issue.

Pondering upping the battery supply, but the generator is a nice mechanic as well.

Visibility is excellent. I like the proportions as well. The nose suits it well.

Overall, having a blast with it. I think it's the new crew escape vehicle for my space station, or at least a cheap taxi. Of course now the week is starting, so i'm not sure how much tinker time i'll have... Still, thanks for the preview edition!

Looks good so far, two problems though, firstly, it needs a heatshield (i say one built in, rather then a new part) , and secondly the cap thing shouldn't land with the capsule. And thirdly, realchute configs!

Use the 1.25 shield/decoupler from DRE and it fits it well. I can't say much about the nose, but i'll see if I can scrape up a realchutes config when I get a chance, and share it with the class.

If it's supposed to be a true Gemini analogue, shouldn't you get rid of the engine in the back?
...the cap thing shouldn't land with the capsule...

Keep in mind that it's not supposed to be a 1:1 Gemini. It's a simplified and kerbalized version of which the parts should generally have uses outside of this single build. For instance i could see the monopropellant engine being useful in some two stage Apollo style landers. Having the cap detach would require it to be a separate part from the chute because of the decoupler, so it's been simplified to keep the work and part count down.

...it needs a heatshield...
The 1.25 heatshield and decoupler combo look like they are a normal part of the stack.

I intended it to use the DRE heatshield, as I've had complaints in the past about pods with built in heatshields and parts on the nose not being shielded properly.

One suggest: the service module could probably have some batteries in it.

That's something I had considered in the earlier stages of development, but ended up not putting in because I wasn't sure if people would think it was OP/prefer to attach radial batteries. Maybe I'll add some in the next build.

Thanks for the mission report bs1110101, good to see the pod in use. :) And thanks everyone for the feedback.

First mission with the Corvus -- an "Advanced Gemini" style circummunar navigation.

I intended it to use the DRE heatshield, as I've had complaints in the past about pods with built in heatshields and parts on the nose not being shielded properly.

It works great with the DRE heat shield. It would be nice, though, to have a Corvus-styled decoupler that shrouded the heat shield.

For the next version could you look into balancing the RCS to minimize translation torque? Right now a fully assembled Corvus doesn't translate the best.

The orbital rendezvous mission required for the previous mission proved a little too complex, so we made a larger booster:

  • 4 weeks later...

Here it is! I knew I remembered seeing a stockalike, Gemini-inspired two Kerbal capsule somewhere, but couldn't remember what it was called. This little guy looks great. :)

Sure, you could use the FASA Gemini... but I generally like avoiding true replicas. It seems somehow improper to use a replica vehicle on a non-historical mission, or modify the vehicle in unauthentic ways, ya know? So I'd much rather have this: similar, but different. This capsule should perfectly bridge the gap between the stock capsules.

Yup it's right here and I get what you mean. I haven't done an official release yet since I still need to come back to it and do some tweaking. I've been sort of jumping around between a few projects.

Speaking of which I might as well show a few things I've been working on, even if they aren't directly related. This is meant to be a place for me to drop off my random creations anyways...

The first is a set of basic aircraft parts that will be available from the start of the techtree, giving players more options about how they run their space program in the early career. I still need to make a landing gear and add support for FAR, before the basics are ready.

I've also started work on a CST-100 alike just for funsies. It isn't very far along yet, but it's interesting to work in a bigger capsule size than I'm used to. (2.5m) I'm only planning to seat 4.

Still in the early texturing stages at the moment, but I'm excited for it. Should be a fun little alternative to the MK1-2, which I'm quite bored of at the moment.
