Let's rule out the facts:

it launched well, went clear of the tower, and then exploded midair with the engines on.

unlikely anything external influenced the thing.

Most likely an internal problem having something to do with the fuel.

Seriously though, that's a big setback for Orbital, I'm glad nobody was aboard that. People won't be so quick to complain when SpaceX has their scrub-fever moments.

Launch pad got damaged, but noone is hurt.

Looking forward for the investigation.

Latest reports: lower thrust than expected. Probably engine malfunction.

Yeah but its worse than just building damage... our poor space program...

It did seem to me to be an internal problem with the fuel feed. It seemed to make a short burst and then lost thrust. Wasn't long after that that it exploded.

My gues is a fuel feed problem. Or something went wrong in the production of the engines closed loop gas cycle.(it does use the Aerojet NK_33's right?)

Ok, so just because nobody was hurt, I take humor in the fact that they say "There was an accident on board the Antares rocket shortly after liftoff" instead of "it blew up"

I caught this screenshot.

It was obvious something was wrong. There were sparks before slowing down. My guess - something got pierced. The turbopump perhaps, I don't know.

Then I walked away to look at the skies, wondered where the rocket was, and overheard them talking about "damage limited to the facility"

The NK-33 engine suffered a catastrophic failure due to burn- through either in the turbopump or the combustion chamber.

I went to a field to try to watch the launch and just waited, was wondering what happened until I got home and saw the fire everywhere on NASA TV.

BTW: This was the launch with Planetary Resources space telescope. It most likely will be a huge setback for the company.

Not to mention that it'll be a setback for entire CCDev.
