Maxmaps offered Squadcast viewers a quick sneak peak at what 0.90’s gizmos will be like. What do you think?

If you want to show us something, please use a medium that doesn't consume so much bandwidth and please rehearse how you're going to present it.

Maxmaps was quite sick, I think pharmacologically propping himself up to make the squadcast at all was pretty dedicated.

I'm sure there will be a nice polished video at some point in the not too distant future

OK, I have a stupid question.

As you can see, two vertical stabilizers are clipped into the fuselage. I guess that if I press and drag the green arrow, I will be able to lift them up? I am asking because all parts in current version of KSP are attached to the connection points or surfaces and you can't clip them into the fuselage.

Good eye, I didn't notice that. I think you may be right about how it will function. Either that or the winglets are attached to the bottom of that part.

Is there a technical reason why you can't make it so we can select any part to be root?

Otherwise, looking great. As long as keyboard shortcuts are supported, I'll be happy.

Already planned for next update, as I recall, there will be place mode (what we have), translation (pic) and root placement mode

LOLOLOLOLOL. Dare to dream.

Not all parts are eligible to be the root part, thats why some parts are greyed out when you create a new vessel. After it's built, I think I can see what you're saying, but I think that would result in illegal attachments (e.g. it's legal to attach a radial RCS tank to the surface of an LFO tank, but it's not legal to attach an LFO tank to a radial RCS tank).

In the video, Maxmaps said you could select any part which is capable of being a root node, so it doesn't sound like we'll be able to use any part we want as the root.

And yet SelectRoot is capable of remapping the tree so that any part (barring struts) is capable of being root. So I'm wondering if there's a technical reason why Squad doesn't want to allow this, or if it's just because they don't want the player to do that.

The new root part must have attachment nodes for SelectRoot to work. A radial-attachment-only part (like a command seat or radial battery) will not work. Parts placed with symmetry cannot be made the root part, either.

There is, but not a very good one. It's how KSP handles the top-down part hierarchy. It's in the same vein as to why we can't have multiple connections per part.

It's something we've wished Squad would address for ages. It makes some builds impossible (anything with more than 1 connection, essentially), and rover construction a pain in the ass.

They've mentioned they'll be incorporating "change root" to the VAB, but that doesn't mean previously un-rootable parts will now become rootable.

The gizmo looks fine, hopefully the hotkeys are congruent. Looks like we've got a bit of a peek at the new part folder system, too (higher-rez). Still no vertical snap, etc, though, which means Editor Extensions will still be better.
