[1.0.4] Endurance (from Interstellar) [DISCONTINUED]

Figured out the vibration :3 now I just need to keep the gear from falling through the ground and/or spawning under said ground. Also sleep, could possibly need that.

Post-sleep EDIT: Looks like Mod compatability is up next, and after that the IVA/ Model update. I'm thinking I'll just do the IVA first, then do the RCS and the control surface when I do the model update.

Few questions for you guys:

Does anyone care if the RCS isn't exactly like in the movie? The angle are odd and make balancing it hard, I was thinking of aiming the ports as close to cardinal directions as I could. Should be a pretty subtle change.

The other was about the IVA, In the movie, the seats lift upwards towards the windows for better visibility. I was thinking about moving the pilot seat up into that position, and leaving the co-pilot in the default one, just for some variety.

Honestly i think it doesn't matter if the RCS isnt exactly the same as the movie but just make the spacecraft very controllable when it comes to docking or maneuvering, i actually have trouble going forward using RCS, it only uses the front thrusters, not the back ones, one other question, will the VTOL engines use monopropellant or liquid fuel?

I'm wondering now if I can move the effects to a different location from the actual thrust vectors. That would just be too easy though, ha.

I hadn't actually thought about what fuel to use. I'm thinking about adding a bit of Ox, and run the VTOL and the main engines (in chemical mode) on Lf+Ox, and make the plasma mode run on Lf+electricity. The would still have to be super efficient so avoid making the ranger too heavy, but I think that's a solid solution.

EDIT: I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Not a setback just a funny error I made. Edited by Shryq

I wonder what benjee is doing. I hope he's helping shryq.

Most everything I cleared up myself, actually. Lo-fi helped with some of the collider issues I was having, I managed to fix all but one issue. The legs themselves work great, the part just cant be selected in flight. Glitchy weird kinda.

Left landing gear is now animated, and ready to be exported to unity. Then after that rear landing gear, which should be much easier, both because they're simpler and because I kinda know what I'm doing now, then VTOL, a bit of tweaking and I'll have another release.

Sorry about that. I was organizing my drop box and forgot moving things breaks links.

http://imgur.com/a/KU6JV Eve's atmosphere proved to be much more difficult than I had expected.

Wing and front landing legs are done and operational. I will warn you, there are some glitches left, use at your own discretion. Also includes a .craft file of an assembled Ranger (stock parts for VTOL and rear landing legs).

What I've been doing is reworking the ring to make it a lot easier to use and to fit the Ranger properly. I completely redid the Unity set up so that now the ring will be oriented in the right direction when added, and the outer corridor segments now support surface attachment and your kerbals won't just float through them. They still don't collide with the ground because if I add convex colliders to each of them the game gets a little angry. I also redid all the nodes to use the NODE{} definition instead of the old coordinates system, which not only makes it a lot easier for me to set the locations and rotation of the nodes accurately but has greatly improved structural integrity too.

I changed the model and node rotation of the Ranger connect corridors too so now the Rangers dock in the right orientation.

Shryq, I've been playing around with the previous version of the Ranger, rescalling does affect the IVA in that any backwards facing parts of the outside mesh ar visible from the inside. You could see the window frames through the windows in some of the back seats, but adding offset = 0.0, 0.15, 0.0 to the INTERNAL{} fixes that with no noticable difference from the inside. To make flight easier I also increased the wing's lift quite a bit (probably too much) and increased the pitchTorque to 75. Docking is... challenging but I'm gald to hear you're working on the RCS balance etc.! Look forward to playing with the latest build!

Download is up!

I've also added a new science experiment, the Habitability Assessment. This is in the cargo pods at the back of the Endurance. Four of them in the stock .craft have docking ports attaching them to the logistics modules so (with a little bit of camera clipping) you should be able to detach them and ferry them down using the Lander.

Not bundling the Ranger yet, gonna wait until Shryq has finished up with the landing gear.

Important to note that due to the re-orientation of the ring in this version and the changing of the nodes being used this will be a save-breaker.

Build 0.1.0 - VTOL Engine and landing legs

Download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q817ak581w9qbsh/ranger_build_0.1.0.zip?dl=0

Includes all the Ranger parts, and a .craft file of the assembled Ranger

The VTOL Engine runs off of the same Electricity/LF that the main engines do, for the time being.

As always I recomend RPM to get the most out of the IVA: https://github.com/Mihara/RasterPropMonitor/releases

If you are having trouble with weak joints, crafts wobbling, etc. there is Kerbal Joint Reinforcement: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/55657-0-90-Kerbal-Joint-Reinforcement-v3-1-1-1-15-15

Changes:

-Overall weight lowered by about 4 tons, center of mass moved forward.

-Front landing legs are now wings, each providing lift and moving the CoL forward to match CoM

-Cockpit SAS increased 40 -> 60, recharge rate reduced 6 -> 5

POLL - Preferred mode of communication.

Would anyone be interested in an IRC channel, a subreddit or any other way to communicate? IMO a forum works great for discussing one thing, with a few people, but when you get many different issues and a lot of users it get's messy. I'm a fan of IRC because it is great for real-time discussion, but a subreddit works better for people in different time zones, as it is persistent. Both are easy to set up and low maintenance. We can do both, either, or neither. I'm pretty intent on getting user input and opinions, and I saw from the other strawpoll that there is a good number of people that don't post here.

Shryq, I've noticed that front left and right landing gears don't have textures. Are they not applied yet or am I missing something?

They haven't been made yet. Every other part that I made after benjee textured it initially have been textured by using the one he made, using different shapes and colors. The rear landing gear coloring is so simple and subtle, and the box on the bottom and the VTOL are both supposed to be the same color as the bottom of the ranger, so I was able to use the default texture to do it.

God this thing is fun. Around Kerbin once and landed on the VAB, with zero fuel left. only lost the front RCS on touch down.
