[1.0.4] Endurance (from Interstellar) [DISCONTINUED]

You know, it occurs to me that the Endurance's landing craft might not actually need a lot of thermal protection.

All modern craft need it because they make as small of a de-orbit burn as possible, and almost all of their braking is done via atmospheric friction.

With their insanely high ISP and thrust fusion thrusters though, the landing craft could make a much more substantial de-orbit burn and reduce their re-entry speed considerably.

you can get an eva of the inside of the ranger and endurance on the same website where the 3d model is. You click the center of the ship and get to go inside!

wooooaaahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!that so cool it will help me a lot

Gimme a day or two. I'm trying to figure out the landing gear still.

Also double posts make kittens cry.

EDIT: Front landing gear have been animated, and the part with the front gear is almost working, still having some trouble with the config/unity side of things. If anyone knows a lot about that, I have a thread here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/102093-My-landing-legs-are-so-close-to-working-only-one-leg-works-at-a-time-though?p=1580740#post1580740

So as it turns out, I'm going to need to make different parts for the landing gear and the wing, and then two more landing gear for the rear. More parts, but it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

I think we should get all the parts in game before starting with IVAs. No point making IVAs when the spacecraft themselves are incomplete. That internal stuff on the Endurance website is really useful though. Shows you how ridiculously large the space inside the Ranger is!

Shryq, landing gear looking good! Looking at the .blend file there seems to be a doubled up vertex near the back of the wing leaving an invisible hole in it which might end up being annoying if any modifiers are added (I've used a tiny bevel on the Lander and most Endurance pieces) You can fix it pretty easily by selecting all and going to mesh->vertices->remove doubles. Otherwise looking great!

Yeah, I mirrored the piece, to allow for easier modeling, I wasn't sure of the process to get the halves to line up properly though.

The landing gear I almost have working. Animation, colliders and everything look good, it's just that the damn things are really bouncy when there is any weight on them at all. It's a start at least :P

Question- will the nose flap of the Ranger be able to move (like it does in the film) AND have RCS?

Also, will this mod be using HotRockets custom emissions for the engine? I liked the film's glow, and it would fit in with the kerbal-ness.

The ranger has a docking port that is at 45° and the docking port at the central docking hub will also be at 45°, will there be an adapter to have a docking port that is straight, so that we can dock our own spaceplanes with a normal docking port? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pNGRp3oDGE0/VF-iADe_ABI/AAAAAAAAB2c/GIm2nkcLFn8/s1600/DSC05389.jpg

@Mekan1k

Jesus what?! What nose flap? I completely missed that one.

It will have RCS very similar to the real one (I had to take a bit of artistic liberty in orienting them, so we'd have RCS on all axes). I'm hoping to make custom effects for the engines as well, but I'm not actually sure how much work that will be. But probably, yes.

Not 45 degrees, but yes, I believe that the main docking node will have docking ports in the cardinal directions, and there will be an adapter for the Ranger's angle port that will go on it. So, sort of the opposite of what you're describing.

@benjee You mean on the underside of the upper flat area?

The entire shovel-nose of the Ranger can flex up and down, to increase or decrease the lifting-body effect of the shape. (I really liked that part from the move. Looked .....)

(Why do you think the nose has that crease?)

EDIT:

You can see the nose-control surface better in the pics on this site:

Today I learned... I guess that's why the wings are pointed up like that?

And if you're talking about the "crease" that you can see here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/113879533@N02/15557580519/in/set-72157648782189217 I just thought it was an air intake. Where did you learn about this?

And no, at least not right now. I want to get everything working on a base level before I start adding any bells or whistles. That would be a really cool function though.

And it flies well enough without it, for the time being. http://i.imgur.com/GpsJcOg.jpg

the nose thing could be done as a control surface, though that would necessitate it being a separate part. can be made FAR compatible via configs.

That looks awesome!

I almost have everything working, except for those pesky landing legs. And obviously it needs to be textured and the models tweaked a bit. That should be a piece of cake once I figure everything out.

Do not fret, friend, for I am aware of the docking port that goes on the back. There's even a node for it already.

What I meant by "done" was having the parts needed to take off and land. The docking port and crew hatch will be put in when I can actually get it to do that.

As for the second docking port, when I started on this I was thinking that there was a second one on the bottom, but I never found anything to corroborate that idea. The question is where is that second port? That little box on the bottom rear actually seems like a good candidate.

I think its between the 2 rcs ports in the middle, anyways just keep on the good work and if u need any help let me know

Well, if you're any good at coding and would like to help me with the landing gear, that's the only thing that I'm having trouble with right now.

Everything needed should be in here:

Blender Files, FBX, Unity files, and game parts directory.

sorry man not good with coding that much, I could model stuff like the IVA and add extra details to the models

Mind if I take a crack at texturing the Ranger Shryq? Looks brilliant.

Absolutely! I was going to wait till I got everything working to see if I needed to change any parts, but if you would like do it anyway, be my guest!

This blender file should have all of the models you need. Some of the parts were modeled hastily, just so I'd have something to work with, namely the vertical engine and the docking port. Also the RCS blocks need to be separated into front, middle, and rear, as that's how the parts are in-game.

EDIT: Heh. I just noticed how bad the polys on the bottom are. How do you keep it from getting like that?
