Visual Studio Community 2013

Recommended Posts

For those who missed the announcement Microsoft now offer what they call "Visual Studio Community 2013" for free.

It's the equivalent of VS 2013 Pro, so you can use plugins with it (like Visual Studio Tools for Unity, Productivity Power Tools 2013, CodeMaid or many others)

Those who paid for VS pro can join me on IRC to share our bitterness :D

What is the difference between this and the VS Express they have had in the past? Sounds like just a new name.

The biggest advantage (for me) for Pro is cross language compatibility. While I have not migrated to 2013 yet, previous versions of Express could not use VB modules with C# applications and vica versa. In my line of work, that is a requirement.

I never really paid for it (I have VS 2013 Ultimate and VS 2012 Pro on another computer), as I was able to get my licenses through the Microsoft Dreamspark program through my school. The biggest thing I like about Pro/Ultimate over Express is the Team Foundation and the Git support built into the IDE. Plus the cross language support is something that you get use to after a while, and then Express just doesn't cut it anymore. My thoughts anyways.
