STS-7/E Space Shuttle (Stock NASA Replica) Still Flies in KSP 1.4.3 - Re-enters Like the Real Thing!

the problem so far with the Buran shuttle: without a big gimbal range of the manengines of the Energia booster, the rocket will fall over just after launch. Buran's engines were fired for orbital insertion and not for launch. just look at some videos on youtube. when the Energia lifts off, it tumbles for some second heavly before the engiens adjusted. Thats why the launchpad was damged so badly after each of the two launches...

mounting a payload on the side without adjusting the vector of thrust is a bad idea :)

edit: but i love the Energia-Buran ... i'm corious in what you will build :D

hey darth, im working on a buran counterpart to the STS-4, wanna help?

i would love too, but sadly not enough time. working on some things in real life :D

but i can share my Zenit Boosters and Energia M rocket if you want a full developed Energia with 4 Zenit should be able to lift 80 tons and more like teh real one. i tried a Buran too ... but it failed because of the gimbal problem and i did not want to add verniers during that time.

Oh.. I guess it wasn't just about strapping on a second pair of boosters.

I'm curious to see how it turns out, though! Good luck!

(PS: I just realized that the Energia looks just like an Ariane 5 with four boosters..)

normaly, the Energia has 4 Engines for its core and no payload fairing, because the payload would be carried sidemounted to orbit. The Energia M instead was a smaller version with only 2 strapon boosters, one mainengine and shorter core with fairings ... a russian Ariane 5 you can say :D

Thanks for the suggestion, but personally I'm not all that interested in the Buran design. You guys seem to already have a good design collaboration going though and I fully support it! Feel free to use the Intrepid orbiter and tweak it as necessary if desired.

My focus now is on subassemblies for the STS (STS 51-L is next) a new modpack for my KSP multiplayer gaming buddies, and updating my SSI vtol ssto shuttlecraft for a much overdue SSI catalog reboot.

I'll be glad to test fly anyone's Buran though!

You know... someone could create a Buran launch stack and attach it to the STS orbiter as a subassembly. There is a single mount point on the Intrepid orbiter just for this purpose. In fact the tank and boosters are held by the single separator. Ill publish any successful tank and booster stack subassembly anyone comes up with.

Well, that seems like a pretty good idea, although staging might need to be altered *a bit*.

(PS: "The project was the most expensive in the history of Soviet space exploration" - Wikipedia" Oh gawd. No wonder they cancelled it.

So, I have gotten into Galileo testing. Unable to post pictures right now, but maybe I can tomorrow (along with a beta download, perhaps?). Currently, its biggest problem is simply a lack of Delta V. The probe itself has 722m/s according to MechJeb, which isn't quite enough for reaching Jool orbit without reliance on gravity assists. The IUS is too weak as well, and only got Galileo's AP about halfway to Dres before giving out. It's basically a copy of Yukon's but has less fuel, so maybe his can get a Jool encounter?

If I recall my research correctly, the real Galileo probe actually DID use several gravity assists before making it to Jupiter (just make sure you set the probe up with enough fuel for several speed up burns so as to be sling-shot around each planet before making your orbital burn to get into Joolian orbit)

Yes, it used something like two Venus flybys and an Earth flyby, and also might have had an accidental asteroid flyby. An Eve assist could get the probe out to Jool, and you could use a Tylo assist to capture you into orbit.

EDIT: Interestingly, some people protested at the launch of Galileo because of the plutonium in the spacecraft's RTGs. They reasoned that if something went wrong with the Earth flyby, the spacecraft could end up reentering Earth's atmosphere and scattering it's dangerous plutonium all over the planet. But you know these hippies, they just don't have enough Kerbal spirit inside them.

@pTrevsTrevs can i have the dl for the Galelio? I could help fix it up.

And inigma, regarding you idea, I don't think I could do that, because the side payload on my Energia is held by a structural point, in this case an empty rockomax Tuna can tank.

No worries. Feel free to branch the buran into a new thread as you wish!

Here is the download for Beta Galileo and an album of my test mission.

sLNDQMo.png

Enterprise, being newly rebuilt with scrap found in the ocean relatively near the old shuttle's crash site, lifts off with Galileo and its Inertial Upper Stage on board. Evidence of the launch pad's involvement in the sabotage is visible at right.

xxujCRg.png

Roll program complete, Pitch program is go. All Systems nominal

PLA0IbL.png

Booster separation confirmed. Enterprise is Negative Return

Qvitcwc.png

Roll to heads up position complete. Go for Orbital Insertion.

56HyfFN.png

Roughly an hour after orbital insertion, Galileo is released from Enterprise's payload bay and is powered up for escape burn.

qyjQJOA.png

The escape burn took place in the dark, so no good pictures of the IUS in action.

RdJvAGS.png

Roughly one day later. Reentry and descent was much better than last time, but I undershot KSC a little. Damn you Mechjeb!IIt looks like I can land this thing though. KSC is very close anyway.

cHbiPCY.png

How the Hell?!?:huh:At least the crew and some of the orbiter survived this time.

ujsGi8e.png

After a two year journey, Galileo has finally arrived at its destination. Kerbin is the blue dot closest to the Sun on the left.

Hello Laythe!

HzUO5ll.png

That's right Jool, I'm here to stay!

GulXlvH.png

Hey, look! two flybys before the first orbit is even complete!

xrxxRr0.png

The atmosphere probe will reveal all of Jool's secrets!

1dt6y69.png

Half an hour irl time later. This got really boring.:P

8fVTtEO.png

Totally worth it. This picture of Jool's interior could be my new desktop background!

Here is the download for any who wish to fly it: http://kerbalx.com/pTrevTrevs/Galileo%20+%20IUS%20(Beta)

Once Yukon and I have fixed its problems, the full version will be released

EDIT: inigma, if you want to list Galileo on the front page right now, that's fine with me, but I suggest you specify that it is a WIP and wont be able to work without cheats unless you are either Scott Manley or Jeb himself

Inigma, I've been working on a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft replica and attached the Intrepid Orbiter on it, and it flies pretty decently. I was thinking if it could be added to the Intrepid Shuttle fleet.

Here it is:

Craft File: http://kerbalx.com/Columbia/Boeing%20747-100%20SCA

It's a big work in progress, and isn't so friendly with part count (398! :0.0:) So I'm working on that, along with some other things.

Feel free to give suggestions! :D

VERY nice! I can wait to list it until its capabilities can be proven. Your choice. Let me know!

Gasp! That's BEAUTiFUl! Adding to OP today and possibly official STS craft list later just as soon as I fly it! Forgive me ahead of time if I sense a need to tweak it for that perfect feel and handling.

Just a note to say that I think you guys are all amazing!

Oh, thanks! I hope I could get the Shuttle to separate from the SCA without causing the game to crash, sort of like the Enterprise gliding tests.

Love the Galileo probe, too! :D

OP updated! Thanks Columbia. I'll see if I can take a look at it. I might modify the SCA, if you don't mind. I am a stickler for perfection in my own crafts, and an SCA was on the drawing board. I might just take yours and clean it up a bit and though it may slap an STS label on it, it will most likely be fully credited to you. :)

Waiting for Trev to authorize OP listing or if he wants to wait until development is finalized.

added SCA to second post design goals.

Go ahead and list Galileo on the front, but specify that it is still a WIP.

I have received a suggestion to replace the LV-T45 in the IUS with an LV-N, however I would have to figure out a way to make it attach to the front of the payload bay to avoid the LV-N's Fairings O' Death. It would also kill the aesthetics of the craft, which are very important to me.
