  3. I think if we do get a delta-V readout in stock, it's more likely to simply be for the current lowest stage in the VAB, and currently firing engines in launch. If you build your rockets top-down that suffices for most cases, and the more complicated cases even KER can't handle.
  4. Remove your head and attach it to your foot. Actually, get someone else to do that, you might have trouble with the attaching. How I mine for fish?
  5. Rockets too complicated? You can get into space if you just stack enough of the blue stack separators up. Make sure to spread them out on the lower levels so it's sort of a pyramid. Then you just keep mashing space until you get into space! No throttle needed.

Even if you could reach the speed of light - and the simple in principle though probably impossible method of reducing your mass to zero springs to mind - the biggest problem is that the next thing you would experience is crashing into something. For an outsider time stops for a thing moving at the speed of light, while from the point of view of the moving thing the entire universe compresses into a two-dimensional plane perpendicular to your motion.
  12. With the small instruments, and also surface samples, it's often a good approach to transmit a reading and return another. If you have a lab you can extend this approach to the Goo and Materials as well. Just returning one reading doesn't yield all the science for most experiments, and a command pod cannot store duplicate data, so transmitting a reading and returning another gets more science than returning a smaller reading. Even if you can return your duplicate data - possible by landing a science lab or an EVA kerbal (including in a lawnch chair) which can both hold duplicate readings, or by landing multiple command pods - transmitting gets you science right away. If you want to run multiple missions concurrently, that means you can unlock more tech for your next missions without needing to wait for previous ones to complete. If you play avoiding quickloads and reverts, the transmitted science is safe in the event of a catastrophic failure or can be used to unlock more tech for a rescue mission should the need arise.

  14. The first one is clearly silly, but to elaborate, too much mass of engine compared to the fuel and payload. Using the KR-2L would be equally silly and inefficient, despite that engine's good vacuum Isp. The other two are both sensible. In deep space the design with the LV-909 will be better, as much because the engine's lighter as because it's more efficient. Not entirely sure about launching from Kerbin, there's probably not an awful lot of difference.
  15. Yeah, models and textures, and therefore parts mods. Possibly some of the files are compressed on disc and then the data's stored uncompressed in RAM, that would explain the discrepancy. As would duplication of data for any reason.

  18. Keeping half an eye on my Laythe boat while it sailed some of the 300 km from landing site to crew needing rescuing. My landing ellipses are practically larger than the world they're on! Later, crashing on purpose. V-max by cantab314, on Flickr Hit the ground at about 1500 m/s, unpowered, in stock aero. Winglets are about the only truly streamlined thing in KSP's drag model.
  19. Ah, the old permissions problems. I've learned they're the first thing to check if I get an access denied type error with a Unix server. Anyway, great pack, I must remember to use it at some point.
  20. For a given ship design, once you've done one burn and noticed the fuel consumption, it's not hard to roughly estimate how much further your fuel will go. Indeed you'll tend to be conservative because your fuel goes further as you burn some off.
  21. In relation to another challenge I realised that wings have a very low drag-to-mass ratio. The result is this entry for this challenge, using 24 winglets (the ones without control) and a probe core lobbed on an up-and-down suborbital flight. Had I hit at the correct altitude I'd probably have fallen between Laie's first entry and Jolly Roger's run. Fun fact: the craft actually accelerates all the way through the re-entry effects, reaching Vmax about when they stop.
  22. Ironically for this challenge (and reality), I think the way to get a fast touchdown might be to have a ship that's mostly wings, since they have a high mass-to-drag ratio. Especially if you were to say spam tailfins that won't create any lift in straight flight. For example I knocked up a ship that was basically 24 winglets around a probe core and gave it a suborbital lob. It was accelerating throughout the re-entry effects, and hit the ocean (and actually went through) at around 1700 m/s.
  23. The snag with GPU-accelerated physics is that being at the moment specific to certain GPU makes and lines means games can't use it for core functionality, and it gets relegated to showy but non-essential stuff like making glass break more realistically.
